My brother's favorite movie at the moment is Scott Pilgrim vs the World, which is a bit of a silly movie about Scott Pilgrim (played by the ever awkward Michael Cera) falling in love with Ramona Flowers (played by the very cute Mary Elizabeth Winstead). Pilgrim basically has to defeat Flowers' seven evil ex's, in a weird kind of video-gamey-music-video sort of way. The film was directed by Edgar Wright, a rather young British fellow (about my age), who's really into pop culture like Nintendo and alternative music.
I've seen Wright at the premiere of his first film, Shaun of the Dead, and sitting in the audience listening to him do Q&A, he tells us that the reason why he chose Minneapolis to premiere his film was because he is a massive Prince fan. He was ecstatic walking around and seeing First Ave (this appears in Purple Rain), and, in fact, when Shaun was throwing records as weapon against the zombies, they held back on Prince's album... Anyway, I'm not surprise at all about Wright's music choices for the soundtrack of Scott Pilgrim, indie bands like Metric, Frank Blank, Dan the Automator, Bluetones (YES! Britpop!), T.Rex, Beck, etc, all making the cut.
By the way, one of the song used in the film was "I Heard Ramona Sing" by Frank Black, which I've had his album for ages now.... it's good to see it in a recent movie.
