If you think about it, Cap'n Jazz never broke up, they just evolved into Joan of Arc. They stopped by Saint Paul at the Turf Club to play tunes from their upcoming unnamed 11th album on October 29th, but technically they played October 30th, since they only set up their equipment at 12:30am. The thing about really late shows, like this one, is that there's virtually no energy from the crowd, except with the occassional "whoo".
Like I said, most of the setlist is from the unrecorded album, so fans of this band was still trying to get their feel around the new material. If there's something to be said about the new songs, it's that it's more math-rock than ever... yet there's also some chaotic melodies and random experimental noises to keep it off the beaten path.
It wasn't until "A Tell-Tale Penis" from Boo! Human that they started to play their "old" stuff. They ended their set with "Let's Wrestle" from their first album, A Portable Model of.., fitting since the beginning music were all from the future. There was no encores, but at nearly two in the morning, it wasn't expected.
I picked up a purple double split 7" from them to add to my collection. It came with downloadable MP3s from Polyvinyl Records, which, hey, I really appreciate because my record player is a piece of junk.
Joan of Arc is still on tour, if you were interested in checking out the new songs. If you want to see the songs recorded with producer Steve Albini you can help them at kickstarter.com. Please note that this project will only be funded if at least $8,500 is pledged by Tuesday Nov 30, 12:00pm EST ... so if all the money isn't there, they won't take your donations (and you won't get your nifty rare Joan of Arc merchandises).
