Violens : Violent Sensation Descends

SAX AND VIOLENS
Violens, a name that combines violence and lens, is a bit ironic, considering that the band seems more intune happy 60s pop music. Strangely enough, the band seems to be influenced by 4AD stuff like, Chapterhouse and Dead Can Dance, according to their free Summer mixtape.

They have an album coming out called Amoral on November 9^th on Friendly Fire Records. Their single and video from the album is "Violent Sensation Descends", inspired by old Italian horror films from Dario Argento.

SEASON OF NUÇI
Speaking of Vimeo videos, Groop and Eikon sent me the video for a cover of Donovan's "Season of the Witch" by Dream Boat to celebrate Nuçi's Space 10^th anniversary. According to the note, the band seems to compose of a who's who of various Athens bands (Hope For Agoldensummer, Dark Meat, Creepy, Modern Skirts, etc).

The video (made by Dan Donahue, Jason Miller, and Chris Bilheimer) is pretty typical witchery stuff: the woods, druids, and creepy music. It's also really long, like over fifteen minutes long.

EVIL REMIXED

♥ Resident Evil Walmart Steelcase

I actually like those Resident Evil movies, mostly because of Milla Jovovich. The latest film, Resident Evil: Afterlife, isn't one of the better film (the beginning sequence is nothing but explosions and bullets!), but I heard it did pretty well on the cinema because it had the 3D gimmick. I'm hoping for them to release this as a 3D bluray.

Anyway, if you haven't already own the old Resident Evil movies on DVD (or just looking to upgrade), the best deal to get is from Walmart, they are releasing exclusive steelbook cases for each film on bluray at a decent price of $15 each. I bought a set, see picture.

In Resident Evil news, there is a remix contest going on. You have until November 10^th to submit remixes of "AxeMan" and "Tokyo", from the official Resident Evil: Afterlife soundtrack. Winner will get credit and their song to be used in a special deluxe edition of the soundtrack. I was standing in line outside the 7th Street Entry on October 28^th and a few girls in front of me were asking why Funeral Party wasn't on the show poster outside the venue (the poster only listed Two Door Cinema Club and Bad Veins). I told them that Funeral Party was indeed on the bill, that I was there to see them. But it made me think that there were people interested in the band.

There was a lot of young people out that bitterly cold Thursday night, and based on how packed the small venue was for a band from Ireland called Two Door Cinema Club, I can tell you that this band is going to be huge. Especially because the band hasn't even released an album yet.

On the bright side, it gave Bad Vein and Funeral Party an audience to play to, to get their name out.

I didn't know much about the band, most of what I've gathered was at the show, where they mentioned that they're from California. What they didn't mention was the fact that they've been become huge in the UK, like many of the US bands that makes it big overseas (including the Strokes, and Minneapolis' own Solid Gold). I can also tell you that, when the band gets going, that they're young and full of energy and it's hard to take your eyes away.

They ended their set with, appropriately titled "Finale": "your head's all grey and your shoes are worn and the books you've read with the pages torn."

Surprisingly heady lyrics for such a young energetic band.

All the songs that were played, I would reckon, is from their album, Golden Age Of Knowhere, which I'm not sure is even released yet. You can get a sample song, "Giant Song" for free, from funeralpartymusic.com.

Since Frank Black/Black Francis reformed the Pixies in 2004, they've been doing the right things: serving their fanbase by having them be part of the band. For instance, they want fans to help them build an interactive gigography. They're asking us to send in photographs, videos, audio recording, anything to do with Pixies.

The latest freebie that the Pixies is offering directly to their fans is the entire recording to their Coachella 2004 show, yes all twenty tracks, as a free download. Hurry, this offer ends in a week. Head over to lalapixiesloveyou.com to download the live album.

If you prefer a physical CD, there is that option as well for $3.99 (plus shipping and handling). In fact, all live albums are sold for that price, so if you were at a show and wanted a memento, it's definitely worth the price of a cup of Starbucks coffee.

And while you're on their website, I'm sure you'll see that Vaughan Oliver is designing their Minotaur collector's item (their entire studio discography on "24k gold plated CD"). They are a bit pricey, starting at $170, with the ultimate edition on Bluray and DVD and vinyl, etc., for $450. Sure, it's almost Christmas, sure you're worth it! Keep telling yourself that.

Matt and Kim at Webster Hall, New York City (10/26/10)

“Tuesday night New York dance party!” Matt declared towards the beginning of their show at Webster Hall. That about summed up the atmosphere in the large venue, where a sea of people all jumped up and down in unison and occasionally supported an over-zealous crowdsurfer. Like the band itself, the show ran on a ridiculous amount of energy and good cheer. They opened with the child-like wonder anthem, “I Wanna,” and blazed through several other fan favorites, like “5K” and “Good Ol’ Fashioned Nightmare” in a matter of minutes. Their songs have always been on the short side, but they stretched it out with funny interludes involving familiar beats and melodies (IE: Sugar Hill Gang’s “Apache”). The audience joined in on “Lessons Learned,” adding their own “da da das” along with Kim’s.

The interaction between Matt and Kim provided much of the entertainment as well, as they have their stage banter down to a quasi-comedic act. Matt joked about everything from the semi-plausible Matt and Kim porno to his Justin Beiber-like bangs, while Kim cursed like a sailor. They enthralled the audience with pseudo-gymnastics, climbing on everything from stools, to ladders, to Kim’s drumset. It was endearing to watch them during songs as well, still grinning maniacally each other, as if they still can’t believe they’re up there, playing their own songs. After all, it’s a big leap from loft parties to Webster Hall.

I'll admit, I love Lykke Li. She made it on my top five a few years ago and she remain one of my favorite artist to emerged from Sweden. Anyway, today (October 25^th), Lykke Li offers two tracks from her "Get Some" single for free, and it gives us a glimpse of what's to come for her forthcoming album, due out next early next year. Capitol Records and Beastie "the single longest lived hip-hop act" Boys have announced that their new album is called Hot Sauce Committee Part 2 (and it will be released before Hot Sauce Committee Part 1). I know, I know, even MCA is confused when he stated:

"I know it's weird and confusing, but at least we can say unequivocally that Hot Sauce Committee Part 2 is coming out on time, which is more than I can say about Part 1, and really is all that matters in the end. We just kept working and working on various sequences for part 2, and after a year and half of spending days on end in the sequencing room trying out every possible combination, it finally became clear that this was the only way to make it work. Strange but true, the final sequence for Hot Sauce Committee Part 2 works best with all its songs replaced by the 16 tracks we originally had lined up in pretty much the same order we had them in for Hot Sauce Committee Part 1. So we've come full circle."

From the press release, it looks like maybe Hot Sauce Committee Part 2 is a return to old school rap and hip hop, instead of their weird all-instrumental album, The Mix-Up that they released a few years ago.

There was a mini-folkpop explosion on this "Songs & Stories" tour with Crown Point, Andrew Belle, and Tyrone Wells, when they stopped by Minneapolis at the Cedar Cultural Center on October 21^st.

Starting this quiet acoustic show was Crown Point. They are normally a trio, but on this tour, it looks like only the two singers Don and Russell (who is from Australia). The highlight of their brief setlist is a cover of Pearl Jam's "I Can Feel It Coming Back Again", which only sounded familiar when the chorus kicked in. The band is touring in support of their debut EP, Wolves.

Andrew Belle has an odd singing voice, like he's singing out of the side of his mouth. This technique isn't that uncommon with folk singers, but it's hard for me to wrap my head around it, especially because Belle speaks in a normal voice. He tells us the first time he played Minneapolis, Justin Beiber was in town that same night. "It was unfortunately...", he pauses, then "... for him."

He wasn't feeling his best that night, he usually made a habit of not eating before a performance, but that night he made the ill-decision to eat spicy Indian food and now his stomach was raging a battle. I think this was the introduction he gave before playing "In Your Sleep".

I'll have to say that the highlight that night was "In My Veins". Apparently he recorded this song intended to be released with his album, The Ladder, but felt it did not below there. Then the television show, Grey's Anatomy picked it up, so he was forced to release it as a standalone single. I guess, as the song goes, "nothing goes as planned".

Before I get to Tyrone Wells, I'll have to tell you that his audience, based on that night, they seem to all be college girls. If you don't believe me, just look at the picture that's used on his website, showcasing nothing but young women in the audience. It's easy to see why they all fell in love with Wells, he's an attractive six foot four (?) bald man who writes love songs.

He started with "Running Around In My Dreams", and followed very closely to his setlist, including all the spots where he tells us a story (hence the tour is called "Songs & Stories"). The stories ranges from funny (a fan stealing Wells' songs and calling it his own) to hopeful (a little girl surviving against all odds in "Grace is Dancing").

The highlight for me was when Well's wife, Elina, came on stage to showcase a few of their songs ("The Only Dream", "Lucky", "I Don't Think You're Listening to Me") from their album Different As Can Be. I'll have to say, the songs are too cute and adorable.

There was no encore from Tyrone Wells because he felt that "When All Is Said and Done" is how he ends his set.

"Songs & Stories" continues on, see tour listing for the latest dates. I think Crown Point drops off somewhere, so it'll just be Wells and Belle at some point. Below are photographs of each band:

Andy from Mercury Monkey stopped by to discuss some random music things with the usual cast of Vu & Sally.

EMI new releases: The Church releases Best of the Radio Songs, Bryan Ferry teams up with a bunch of modern artists with Olympia (featuring Kate Moss on the cover), and Cliff Richard celebrates his 70th birthday with a collection of Jazz standards in Bold as Brass.

Richard Cheese, although "retired" in 2008, is back with a new album for 2010: OK Bartender. I actually didn't mention the new album, because I've only been listen to "old stuff".

Upcoming shows: Peabody, 78 saab, Charlatans, Manic Street Preachers to play Sydney. Clinic, along with Fresh & Onlys, to play 7th Street in Minneapolis on November 12^th.

Recording was untimely cut off abruptly, so we just ended with Clinic. Also, apologies to everyone involved, Friday's recording was a bit of a nightmare because I had to be at three locations that night (apparently last Friday was a popular time for people to leave Minneapolis forever). Plus on top of cutting things close to the vest, I had recently restored my computer so I had to re-install all my software and the default recording option for the skype recorder was 8bit, so the audio sounds BAD. I don't know why the default was so low, but since then, I've installed the best audio recorder called Call Graph and set all recording to the highest audio option. Again, sorry for the poor audio.

Double Booking

I think I may be over my head when it comes to randomly accepting tour assignments. Next week, I will be pretty much out all week, but these two dates are particularly bad for me: October 28^th and 29^th. So to spotlight those two dates:

First up will be The Dandy Warhols at the Fine Line Cafe in Minneapolis on October 28^th, this is the same night that I've agreed to see Funeral Party (see previous entry). I've already seen The Dandies a few times as well, so, yeah, you can count me as a fan. I'm actually pretty excited about this upcoming show, because I'll be looking forward to hearing some new material, as well as hearing them play their hit like "Bohemian Like You" as well as "Minnesoter", you betcha. Speaking of hits, apparently this new tour is for their latest compilation The Dandy Warhols Collection: The Capitol Years: 1995-2007, out now on Capitol Records/EMI (just in time for the holidays and would make a great gift for the Dandy fan).

If you've already own all of the Dandy Warhols' albums, like I do, you'll be happy to know that there is one exclusive new song on the compilation.

I wanted to cover this band because they're on a Minneapolis-based record label called Secret Stash Records, but since I couldn't find anyone to cover this event, I've reluctantly accepted to see them (this is the same night as Joan of Arc).

Peña are playing next Friday, October 29^th at the Cedar Cultural Center (fast becoming one of my favorite venue, I will honestly accept any shows that is playing at this venue), in celebration of their album release. The show is cheap ($8 advance, $10 day of), and will be a seated show. I am told that the CD comes in an elegant wooden box and comes in a CD/DVD combo, making owning the album to be special. If it looks nice and decently priced, I'll be sure to pick up my copy.

In the meantime, if you're interested in hearing what they sound like, described as Afro-Peruvian, their website is giving a free MP3 of "El Mayoral", excerpt below:

We are excited to announce that we are GIVING AWAY A FREE MP3 download of the song “El Mayoral” by Peña. We recorded this track in the Spanish Cultural Center located in Lima, Peru on April 16th, 2010. While it was not part of a concert, it was tracked live (all the musicians playing together in one room) in a beautiful theater. Because we did not have access to a recording studio, we were forced to improvise and record wherever we could set up our portable rig. It just so happens that on this day we were very fortunate to be granted access to this incredible space. We must extend a special thanks to Rafael Santa Cruz and The Cajon Festival for allowing us to use the theater. At the bottom of this post are a few pictures from this session.

We've previously mentioned Joan of Arc a few times here, so naturally I want to see the band play live. They're coming here to the Turf Club on October 29^th, so I'll be leaving Pena and heading straight to St Paul to catch the band.

For their 11^th album, Joan of Arc wanted to record their new album with legendary producer Steve Albini at Electrical Audio, but they need your help to raise money.
