Miami Horror - Illumination and US Tour

Miami Horror

Illumination is the debut album from the Melbourne psychedelic indie-electronic outfit, Miami Horror and is absolutely full of brilliant tracks, ready for you to dance your pants off to. 

Illumination was released in Australia on August 20, but if you weren’t aware, you can also get your hands on a 2CD limited edition version of Illumination that features a bonus disc of remixes of Sometimes, Moon Theory plus tracks from the Bravado EP. The second disc features remixes from the alleged (I have ashamedly not heard of any of them before) best of the local and international circuit including Shazam, Sam La More, Treasure Fingers, Hook N Sling, Fred Falke and others.

 

Some exciting news for the more american of our readers: Miami Horror will be heading to the US for the first time as a band in September following their Splendour In The Grass appearance, playing headline shows and festivals across the country including the following dates:

Worst Case Ontario – Smallcraft

Uh oh.  Sounds like someone has a case of the grumpies.  Or so I thought, after first listen of Smallcraft, the latest EP from New York power rockers Worst Case Ontario.  Not one to caress his audience with subtlety, singer Sam Weisberg opts instead for shameless (awesome) obviousness.  From the opening chord on Smallcraft, listeners are treated to a wild tour of angry music history, making significant stops in “Garage Rock” City and Punksville by way of Interstate “Yelling.”  If you like it fast and hard, no doubt you’ll want a ride.

As with their last album, Burning Politely, the boys of Ontario abandon the throes of glorified indieshmindie in favor of a grimier, slimier rock.  They may call New York “home,” but Smallcraft is more of a “fuck you” to soy-fed audiences than a call to Pitchfork media.  Weisberg remains a man of phrasing, and as such, the constant to his music is not just a need for speed, but an appreciation of the finer lyrics in life.  To wit:  I saved but around the bend were ten glutton meals / She brings her lunch to work; it’s backwards snubbing / Don’t see the harm in living a little / Somebody buy me and assume all debt (“I’m In Debt”).

The first few minutes of the aforementioned “I’m In Debt” recall the mid-90s, a time when many of us came of age, felt cross for no identifiable reason, and cranked the volume so high our eardrums still issue mild objections.  In a way, Smallcraft is a bit of a mystery:  coarse, be-flanneled loafing coupled with a distinctly contemporary coup de rock.  The 6-minute “Capricorn” makes good use of the latter, lifting and rolling as Weisberg spins astrological woe:  “…I don’t bond with, don’t click with, wouldn’t be caught dead with another Capricorn” (I think we’ve all felt similarly about nature’s terrestrial goat).

So... just wanted to write a quick one for you. It seems like we have a little Australian theme going anyway. 

This Wednesday night just past, I was lucky enough to see an acoustic set in a quirky little pub basement in Darlinghurst, Sydney. Three youngsters from the Sydney-based band Papa Vs Pretty played two of the songs from their new EP, Heavy Harm. Heavy on the melody and quite intense lyrically. Foot-tappingly brilliant.

The boys will join Florida’s indie-pop wave-rockers Surfer Blood who will be hitting Australian shores in just two weeks with headline shows at The Corner Hotel, Melbourne on Friday, July 30th and Manning Bar, Sydney on Tuesday, August 3rd…. but you can get a sneak preview of Papa Vs Pretty’s wares at Spectrum in Sydney this Saturday (28^th) and if their non-acoustic live said is even slightly better than what can be heard on the EP and what I witnessed on Wednesday night then you’ll be in for a treat…. and word on the street is that their lives shows are fairly amazing.

GEOFFREY GURRUMUL YUNUPINGU

Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu

The first time I played this album I was surprised I never heard of Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu. His voice sounds universally familiar.  Even when he sings in his native language, it’s deeply personal and yet he transcends all cultural and geographical boundaries.

Gurrumul was born in 1970 on the Elcho Island, a few hundred miles off the Northwestern shores of Australia.  But he is only Australian by location.  In his heart and through his songs he is a folk singer for the Gumatj nation.  With a little luck and a lot of talent he was introduced to the rest of the world in with his debut album, Gurrumul. 

“A remarkable breakout album,” Stated the BBC.  “Listen and you will surrender to the greatest voice this continent has ever recorded,” Raved the Sydney Morning Herald. 

Gurrumul has a unique ability to draw in and transport the listener.  On “Marrandil” he paints a pastoral setting with a voice overwhelmed with emotion as he describes a sunset on the water and reflects about his ancestors, his country and his place in the landscape.

I’m usually partial to the female voices of Billy Holiday, Norah Jones and Enya when it comes to quiet songs, but Gurrumul’s voice is achingly beautiful.  His voice has the ability to soothe and ease.  He makes Placido Domingo sound like Bob Dylan.

The Sydney Morning Herald uses words like “emotional bridge” and “wellspring so deep” to describe Gurrumul’s musical style.  Whatever the description he has the ability to swim in deeper currents not afforded to most musicians.    Is it because he was born in a remote place?  Is it because he is blind?  Whatever his circumstance, Gurrumul is a remarkable musician.

On his website gurrumul.com it states his current European and American tour is on hold while he recovers from an illness.  I wish him a speedy recovery.

Since getting my (new) Xbox, I've been watching my new favorite web series, The Guild on Zune Video, since it's free. You can watch the series online as well on watchtheguild.com, but I think you have to put up on watching some advertisements. I highly recommend you watching it, especially Season 2.

For those who aren't familiar with The Guild, it's about some misadventures of some MMORPG gamers in the Knights of the Good.

Some key characters:

Codex (Cyd), played by the beautiful Felicia Day. Codex is the healer/cleric in the group and seems to be the one point that connects the other guild members (aka "guildies").

Vork, my favorite character in the whole bunch. He doesn't seem to interact well with normal humans, and he's a bit frugal (for instance, bringing his own slices of cheese to a restaurant).

Zaboo, an Indian/Jewish ("HinJew") character who is obsessed with Codex. My favorite quote from him is "+5 Sexterity").

Bladezz, the Rogue. He's a high school student and spends a lot of time gaming. He's also known for making bad sexual jokes.

Clara is a mother who often ignore her children and husband. She's my least favorite character, only because I can't really relate to her.

Tinkerballa, the Ranger. She's supposed to be cold and calculating, but she's not really that interesting outside of being an Asian gamer.

Currently, the Guild is on their fourth season, episode 5 was just posted. I can't say that I like how the season is developing. I guess, I just don't find this season all that funny. I hope it picks up.

Anyway, I know that Felicia Day is really into gaming and music. Her video for "Avatar" was inspired by dance music from the 80s. She wrote the lyrics and had Jed Whedon (from Dr Horrible's Sing Along Blog) came up with a "C+C Music Vibe".

I don't know the story behind the Guild's latest Bollywood-inspired video, but I suspect it has a lot to do with Zaboo and watching Hindi movies.

Lara tells me that Margaret Cho is beloved by Asians and gay men. It made me question myself when I'm qualified as both Asian and male. To be honest, I think she's well loved beyond those two groups, even by white people. (That's a joke).

Most people may remember Cho as the force behind All American Girl on ABC, advertised for being the "first" all Eastern Asian television show. While this show drew criticism from the Asian community for stereotyping Asians, I just think they didn't understand the humor... I mean how else are you going to make a funny program about race without a little stereotype?

I think the failure of All American Girl caused Cho to disappear from the public for a while. Six years after the cancellation, she came back strong with Notorious C.H.O. I'm glad to see she's back and seemingly doing great!

Her latest project is called Cho Dependent* to be released on August 24^th, just in time to kick off her forthcoming tour. I actually thought this was a new comedy album like Revolution or I'm The One That I Want, but after quickly listening to some same tracks - these are actually original new music recording by famous musicians. Songsmiths like Tegan & Sara, Ben Lee, Fiona Apple, and Ani DiFranco. I'm assuming just by putting in the effort, that these artists are fans of Cho, and vice versa.

I'm actually quite curious to see how her live show will be, especially because I do not think all of these awesome artists will be touring with Cho?  Most likely, I will see Cho singing her songs and perhaps even throw in a joke here or there. Looking forward to seeing her live.

The last few days have been really jammed packed for me. Up, down and all around.

I'll recap the last few days for you: Thursday, was a long day of museums. At first the sculpture garden, then the museum is free after 5pm on Thursday. The Walker Art Museum is tailored more to modern art, so there was an emphasis on 60s artwork and photography. Heading over to MCAD's museum is mostly amazing renaissance pieces, combined with Asian and African artwork on the mid level.

Friday was Irish Festival on Harriet Island. We didn't spend too much time wandering through the various booths, as we got there as the Young Dublins (aka "The Young Dubs") was in the middle of their set. It had also rained earlier, so the grounds were completely soaked. As soon as we knew it, The Great Big Sea were on stage. They played a full set, and quite interactive with their fans. They also made sure that people knew that this was their tenth album, that they were no spring chickens. Made sure people knew that songs like "Nothing but a song" and "Good People" were from their new album, Safe Upon the Shore.

You can tell that having a reputation of touring sometime 300 days out of the year, that they've accumulated all these fans over time. The fans loved it and often sing along to their songs, however the whole crowd got to play the singalong game as well when the band went into a medley famous hit songs like "500 Miles", "Don't Stop Believin'", and "I Fought the Law".

We also managed to squeeze in a show at the 7th Street Entry for Phoenix Philosophy, which begs the question: if they broke up, will they raise again?

Anyway, I was told that the show had sold-out, but judging from the half-filled venue, most people did not bother to show up (or perhaps showed up for the first band and then left). Well, on the bright side, there were plenty of elbow room.

Although Saturday didn't quite turned out as planned, it was still awesome as the day ran its course. We were supposed to show up and check out Pizza Luce, but that didn't happen. Instead, we spent most of the day record shopping. I know that may not sound that awesome to some people, but if you're a music lover (especially before MP3s), we still love to look over album artwork and packaging. Granted, I will not pay full price for music, I still love owning a physical version of my music. Bought some Pizacato Five albums, some Morrissey singles (for collecting reasons), Pulp single ("Trees"), and a cheap Broadcast album ($2).

We also ended up at Club Jager, which was sort of in this weird north-ish place, out of the mad club scene 10 blocks or so south.

I spent the whole of Sunday asleep in bed.

My friend is visiting, so I'm looking for things to do this weekend in Minneapolis. Fortunately, there's a ton of events happening this blistering weekend (and it's FREE!).

First of all, I think we're definitely going to be doing the Irish Fair this year. I know St Patrick's Day was in March, but who cares when it's free in August! The two main attraction seems to be California's Young Dubliners (official/myspace) and Canada's Great Big Sea (official/myspace).

I have music recordings from both band, but GBS in particular, I love their fast-paced version of R.E.M.'s "It's the End of the World As We Know It" (as if the song can get any faster).

GBS is also known for touring non-stop, as much as 300 days in a year on tour, which is absolutely insane if you ask me. But hey, I suppose, it's where the money is at: touring and getting your name out there.

As for the Young Dubliners, they were originally living in Dublin, but eventually met at the Irish Rover in California. They formed the band and at the height of their career in 2008, they were on CBS for St Patrick's Day celebration.  They're also known for doing a lot of "traditional" Irish songs, so if you have any Irish compilation - chances are, you've probably heard The Young Dubliners and not know it.

Both Young Dubliners and GBS are playing Friday and Saturday, and if you can't make it out Friday because you have to work, there's always Saturday. Between the two, I think we might do Friday to avoid the crowds. I hope parking isn't a nightmare.

Before I forget: I know this is a music website, but you know I also love comics. So, I wanted to quickly mention that I'm pretty sure I will be bicycling to this event: Minneapolis Indie Xpo at the Soap Factory on Saturday, August 21^st. This is the first annual/debut of The Minneapolis Indie Xpo (aka "MIX"), and the price is right (FREE), so I'll be stopping in to check it out. Maybe I will even report back.

I wonder if Air Conditioning School/UltraChorus’s Chris Heidman is a perfectionist.  Not braids-rug-fringe-while-chronologically-categorizing-his- TV-Guides perfectionist, more: methodical with serious, serious objectives and safe ways of having fun perfectionist.  I only speculate because both his musical projects share a studied air, as though the artist was conscious of every little “ooh” and “ah” (in a world where happy accidents are still accidents).

Maybe I’m entirely wrong, but General Mountain Time, ACS’s full-length debut, doesn’t sound like Heidman’s very concerned with messy improvisation.  Contextually speaking, his background in production may play a significant role in his current interests.  The nature of electronic music allows ample room for precision and members of the genre make full use of their liberties.  Were it not for the public’s need for fleshy, oxygen-breathing presence, it’s easy to imagine little electro-pop robots mixing flawless beats under the monikers “Ladytron” and “Goldfrapp.”

It’s hardly a shock, then, that Heidman employs familiar techniques with Air Conditioning School.  Had he pulled on a pair of groovy pants and composed a set of Lovin’ Spoonful-inspired dance hits, I might question his motives (and mental health).  But GMT is an album that could expand the one-block radius of Midwest electronica appreciation by offering an accessible bridge, at the same time maintaining appeal with existing fans (a thornier feat, as loyal fans are often the harshest critics of change).

I previously wrote about “Busymore” and “Wake Me Up,” using such adjectives as “soothing” and “mellow.”  I stand by this assessment, but wish to amend it slightly to include new vocabulary:  “sexy” and “nearly dance-y.”  The latter describes songs like “Days and Days,” a bouncy Frankenstein-of-a-number that engineers melodies to walk and talk like real dancing boys!  Other noteworthy tracks include the smooth as butta’ (albeit grammatically frustrating) “Up On,” and the ambiguously 1970s-lite “Calm Will Come Around” (does it not sound like the background theme for a Mary Tyler Moore montage?).

For the most part, General Mountain Time is a comfortable fit for Heidman as he explores the pop terrain.  His voice is suited for calm narration and he certainly possesses the technical prowess to complement such straightforward vocals.  However, it would be interesting to see what a bit of imbalance might generate—a slip of the fingers, the squeal of feedback, a misguided bass line perhaps—some sign of chaos envy, or, at the very least, proof that Heidman’s hands aren’t made of RAM.
