When it comes to world music, no one can hold a candle to Putumayo. This New York company started out in clothing, then to music, and now, ta-da, books. I should also point out that all Putumayo CD releases comes with 30+ page booklet, written in English, French, and Spanish, so it just made perfect sense to me that they'd venture into printing.

Putumayo Presents - South Africa

For the first time, 2010 FIFA World Cup, is taking place on Africa's soils, and to celebrate, Putumayo's latest compilation is called South Africa. Sadly, I think the South African team did not make it into the final rounds, but I don't think that would stop the vuvuzelas from invading the final knockout games.

One thing I've picked up from listening to this Putumayo's album is that South African's music is, it's quite calm and cool. There's some hints of reggae (Zoro's "Work" is a really good example), traditional Kwaito (Bholoja's "Mbombela"), and sometime rap (Blk Sonshine's "Nkosi"). The different style of music, reflects a rich and diverse culture found in South Africa. Although I could not tell you if all eleven official languages were sung, I can tell you that there's Zulu on the a cappella "Ngahlulele" by Soweto Gospel Choir.

My favorite song is the English song, "Beautiful Feet" by Nibs van der Spuy. The slow acoustic really brings out van der Spuy's beautiful voice.

Be on the lookout for Putumayo's next release Tribute to a Reggae Legend (which contain a track from my favorite Bralizian, Céu).

Putumayo Presents - Latin Party

Salsa anyone?! The rhythmic sound of this compilation took me away to a sweaty dance floor in a packed Latin dance club - far from the Midwest where I reside.

This CD infuses sounds from many regions of Latin America, combining salsa, cumbia, Afro-Cuban, funk, soul, and jazz. The percussion, the brass horns, the vocals - muy caliente!

Putumayo, the company that put together this quality collection of tunes, successfully pieced together a variety of fresh faces in the Latin scene. I would recommend this to anyone who doesn’t already have an extensive collection of Latin music that includes these new artists. If you’re looking for some danceable music to throw on for your party this summer, this is perfect.

I really enjoyed the song “Asi Se Compone Un Son” by Cecilia Noël. Her voice is solid and she definitely sounds a bit like the “Queen of Salsa,” Celia Cruz.

Also, keep your eyes open for the group Yerba Buena out of New York. Nominated for a Grammy in 2003, they’ve gained quite a bit of recognition and have a great, funky sound. The lead singer, Cucu Diamantes, recently released a solo album as well. Itunes has been recommending I buy both artists’ music for a year now. Time to get out the wallet

I've never seen Quintron and Miss Pussycat before, but I was told to expect two things: puppetries and dancing. And you know what? All true.

As I have previously mentioned, Triple Rock Social Club usually means three (or more) bands playing. Warming up the crowd was The Bombay Sweets (myspace), which was a kind of a rockabilly/surfer-ish guitar and drums duo. Singer Nathan seems to have been in a billion other bands (Dynamiters, Selby Tigers, even with Har Mar).

Cave (myspace.com) is an impossibly hard to google-band. And I think they don't really care about their name either. They're basically this psychedelic/jam band. They only did, I think, six songs, but each song goes on for about twenty minutes, so it made up for any set times.

By the middle of Cave's set, the crowd had started to come closer to the stage. There were more people there than I had expected, in fact, the turn-out was really good. It made me wonder how people find out about music like Cave or Quintron and Miss Pussycat. By eleven o'clock, the couple came on stage and Quintron basically said as a matter-of-factly, "The show is about to begin", and quickly disappeared. The lights dimmed and the spotlight is on the puppet stage.

♥ Puppets!

The puppet story is about an elephant and a tiger, who did some black magic to get "party pizzas". The police arrived and, if you're still following the story, was killed by the tiger. I won't really go into details about the rest of the story, but it sounds like either this whole thing was some weird amazing dream, or simply a story an imaginative child might tell. Either way, it was really weird and well presented.

Incidentally, the whole stage becomes a big Godfather of pizza monster. Easily the highlight of the show for me.

The rest of the show features really upbeat "organ" style of music from Quintron's keyboard that resembles the front of a car (with working headlights) and Miss Pussycat shaking her maracas.

Their singing style sounds like a lot of yelling to me, but it didn't really matter, everyone is enjoying themselves, dancing wildly. They are simply just a really, really fun band.

My favorite performance was, maybe I didn't hear it right, but it sounded like "Bad Mother F*****" (the backup girls shouted back "he's a bad mother f*****"). I think that's actually all the lyrics, but it's repeated over and over, while Quintron jumps into the audience and sang that to the people on the floor.

If you are looking to be entertained, I think you really need to check out Quintron and Miss Pussycat in person. Don't say I didn't warn you about the dancing part.

Mates of State and Free Energy stopped by Minneapolis for a solid two-show performance at the 400 Bar on June 23rd and 24th. Strangely, before any of the band played, they had a stand-up comedian. Actually, for the 24th, they actually had two stand-up, Mates of State's bus driver (who is obsessed with ALF, apparently) and a comedian by the name of (I think) Sy. I thought the second guy was pretty funny, if you can 'stomach' his jokes about a fat lady ordering a Wendy's double Baconater sandwich. He reminded me a bit of John Mulaney and Jim Gaffigan.

♥ Free Energy

I talked to the employees who were working last night and they told me that it would seem that most of the audience was there to see Free Energy. But tonight, they said that the majority of the audience seems to be for Mates of State on account that the show was sold-out (although I suspect it probably had something to do with the various media appearances from the day before). Personally, being in the front of Free Energy set, I can tell you that it really, really felt that the audience were mostly Free Energy fans. Perhaps their strong audience following might be because Free Energy was originally a Minneapolis band called Hockey Night.

Anyway, looking around at their fans, I was surprise to see that most of them were singing along, considering that Free Energy seems like a fairly new band. I'll admit the band's style of music and songs are quite catchy and fun, but then again, I had that feeling when they came on stage with their adopted theme song of The Rockford Files (man, that song rocks).

They didn't really play that long, perhaps only six songs, but all the songs were tight. I felt that they should have ended their set with the easy to follow "Bang Pop" song (their chorus is easy to remember: "bang, bang, pop, pop"). Easily their best song.

Mates of State came on stage nearly 11pm, which was about the same time last night. I thought it would be just the duo, Kori Gardner and Jason Hammel, but they actually had a trumpet and guitarist. The two additional band members actually add a lot to their live set, although they did leave for breaks every so often whenever a song didn't require a more guitar backup.

I'll give them this: they really love playing other people's songs*. They did at least three cover songs, including an odd version of Belle & Sebastian's "Sleep Around the Clock". Although not as ill-conceived as their attempt at "Every Rose Has a Thorn", the timing and rhythm of their B&S cover song sounds all wrong - but I think that's how they preferred it.

During the show, Jason stayed mostly on drums and Kori switch between her Korg keyboards. There was a moment when Jason actually joyed Kori's side, singing Tom Wait's "Long Way Home". See photo below.

♥ Mates of State

If you're looking for a band to see, check out Mates of State and Free Energy in your town. Although the two bands may be a different kind of music, it's a good bill.

* PS I later found out that they've actually recorded ten cover songs for their digitally released album, Crushes, so it made sense that a lot of their songs were covers. As a cover lover, I'll have to try and buy the album, although I've had issues with trying to buy from topspin.net (their popup window just display a black screen). Flash sucks on my computer, and I run a lot of anti-scripting plugins, as I'm paranoid.

Topical Comedy Time

Well you Yanks may not know what a football vuvuzela is*, but the rest of us have been busy watching the FIFA World Cup. Including Richie Webb, BBC Radio 2's sport-comedy-music guy. And he's come up with this little ditty based around the not-so-well-received Jabulani ball. A day later and I'm still bursting out in random fits of laughter at that mid-song solo...

Tilly and the Wall - Dust Me Off

As for me, I'll be in Iowa, once again, for the 80/35 Music Festival. Learning experience from last year: bring a rain poncho, bring your own internet (iPad), and bring a great camera (my Olympus four third camera).

Last year we saw some great bands, including Matisyahu and Tilly and the Wall.  This year, I'll be checking out Modest Mouse and Dar Williams.

About to run out the door to hop on a tour bus, Angela from the english 4-piece,The Magic Numbers, squeezed in a very brief chat with Sally. Its been a few years since the release of their last album, Those the Brokes, in 2006 and quite a lot has happened in the meantime. Romeo, Michele and Angela each working on various other projects, including Romeo's work on Damon Albarn's Africa Express Project (including a song that is on the Twilight: New Moon soundtrack), Angela's work on The Boxer Rebellion's latest album and Michele's solo work. They also have their own studio now. ooh!

Containing arrangement from the late Robert Kirby (of Nick Drake's Five Leaves Left fame), the new album, The Runaway is set to be released in July. With the release of the album The Magic Numbers are about to kick off quite an extensive tour (including Australia; adding to the already brilliant line-up on the bill at the sold out Splendour in the Grass festival in Woodford, Queensland at the end of July).

KaiserCartel, the couple-duo that that we love here at W♥M just celebrated their CD-releasing party at the Cedar in Minneapolis, on June 17^th.

Helping them celebrate was Kid Dakota, who, unfortunately due to my schedule, I only caught the last two songs (but let's be honest here: shows at the Cedar starts and ends really early and not to mention on time!). Singer Darren Jackson ended his show with "Optic Failure", which had a great cello part, which I'm assuming was used throughout his set.

KaiserCartel - Favorite Song (Minneapolis Version)

There was a brief break before Benjamin Cartel and Courtney Kaiser came on stage. The stage was setup looks like it was for five or six band members, but it was mostly just the duo. Various musical instruments were used, including what looks like a weird foldable accordion-thing. Sorry, I'm not so instrumental savvy, as noted when I previously thought that the ringing on "Favorite Song" was an alarm clock. As it turned out, having finally seeing them perform live, I can tell you that it's an ice cream frother on a xylophone.

Based on the introduction of their songs, it would seem that most of the setlist consisted of songs from their brand new album, Secret Transit . An album that Cartel claimed was "surely the world's greatest album."

♥ Courtney Kaiser

Speaking of the new album, they also mentioned that the funding and recording of the album was made possible by fans. People who made pledges donations were privy to an exclusive b-side EP called Philanthropy and various other perks. For those looking for a more personal touch, you can actually make them record songs they hate (Lisa Loeb's "Stay" for instance) or private concerts. The best part I heard them mention was that Cartel will be painting a series of pets.

Although I wasn't familiar with the new material, they mostly sound pretty mellow and introspective to me. After "Okay" (which was switched with "Minefield"), the set picks up to more "devil-horned" type of music.

For their encore, KaiserCartel started playing acoustic and singing very softly to the audience. We're talking, like they were standing right in front of me, singing to me. They walked around the audience, singing the song, while everyone watched intently.

Tonight, they are playing to a much bigger Jayhawks audience, so I'm very glad I got a chance to catch them at the intimate setting of the Cedar.

Rober Miles - Paths (FSOL Remix)

I'll just leave this here for everyone to fill in the gaps. Hell, I thought it was Massive Attack or someone when I first heard it. Actually a Future Sound Of London remix of a Robert Miles track... such a 90s sound. Thought you'd like it.

Peggy Sue at the 400 Bar, Minneapolis (6/15/10)

I can't help but think of Buddy Holly when I think of Peggy Sue, but clearly this Brighton-based band doesn't sound anything like Buddy. For one thing, they are supposed to sound like modern indie-folk, particularly with their opening song "The Shape We Made" with the brilliant line: "his pretty eyes will soon grow tired".

Before I ramble on about Peggy Sue, I wanted to quickly mention the two opener: Athletes in Slacks (myspace) and She Keeps Bees (official / myspace). I've seen the former before, and told you that they finished strong with INXS's "Never Tear Us Apart". While this time around, their cover song (of Tears For Fears' "Head Over Heels"), but it was in the middle of their set. They seem like really nice guys, like you'd want to go bowling with them.

♥ She Keeps Bees

She Keeps Bees is basically a guitar and drum duo, and usually bear the comparison of The White Stripes, and possibly unfairly so. Singer Jessica Larrabee seemingly hates the comparison of Cat Power or PJ Harvey (at one point heckled at herself, referring to herself "When did PJ Harvey get so fat?"). And for the record, she did look a bit like Chrissie Hynde and sings like Chan Marshall, only because she has a smoky southern comfort singing style.

I didn't know any of their songs, but that's okay, it was still fun to watch Larrabee cursing at her amp ("Why don't you work right?"). She jokingly said, "yeah blame the equipment, when really you suck." I love the self-loathing qualities that Larrabee brings. Sadly this night was the last night that they'll be playing with Peggy Sue.

♥ Rosa Rex

So just a quick update for those catching up, Peggy Sue are basically Rosa Rex and Katy Klaw, and one Olly on drums. If you were wondering about their odd stage name, they used to play under Peggy Sue and the Pirates, so that explains a lot.

They're closely associated with other indie-folk bands and singers like Kate Nash and Mumford & Sons. And not surprisingly will be playing with Laura Marling this July.

Well, I'll say one thing about the band, they sound more louder and fuller live. I think that works well, considering that the two girls are soft-spoken (so polite! "can I get more vocals, please?") and on their debut album, Fossils and Other Phantoms they are more low-key. Which is fine for a studio album, since you do want to hear the vocals clearly.

They admittedly said they only have "a few songs" since they only have one album. But fans kept shouting out, "ten more! twenty more!" But their brief hour set, they exchanged acoustics, ukulele, electric, bass, and, of course, the accordion.

My favorite song they did was "Long Division Blues", mostly because of the line, "our love is like a long division." It's really lovely.

Peggy Sue are currently on tour and be expecting to do all the UK massive festivals, including Glastonbury.

If you haven't listened to our podcast, I'll fill you in: they're from Melbourne, Australia. Sally may have heard of them via Triple J. I pointed out that the girl in the band is on bass (one point for me).

Broken Bones (Depreciation Guild Remix)

Ex-Curve Toni Halliday's new project is called Chatalaine. The project is a collaboration with Louise Dowd over the past three years. They finally have a debut album ready, and it's called Take a Line for a Walk. It's to be released digitally tomorrow.

Raining and OK - "Shadows" Music Video
