I knew that going in, that I wouldn't be able to cover this Los Campesinos! and Cymbals Eat Guitars as much as I would like to as I had another show to cover last night, May 1st. As usual, First Avenue shows on Saturday are usually "all ages" shows because of some dance (Salsa night? *see comment) event that starts at 10:30, so this show started very early.
Cymbals Eat Guitars warmed up the audience, who were still shuffling in. I have always intended to check out this band in detail since Village Voice called the band "Best New Brooklyn Band" of 2009. Since then, they've been held in high regards with Pitchfork, ABC and Day Trotter.
If you want a free track, the b-side "Tunguska" is available for free if you provide your email address (see embedded widget). The song starts off acoustic and soft, but it does build up. It's good for just a b-side. If you decide to buy the 7", it comes with a slap-bracelet! Go ahead and re-live your childhood.
Anyway, the buildup in intensity song styles seems to fit Cymbals Eat Guitars' M.O., as the songs that they did play live follow that formula. I believe most of their songs that were played live are from their debut album, Why There Are Mountains, released last year from Sister's Den Records.
As for Los Campesinos! they are a very, very large band. Two girls and six dudes from Wales. I'll have to mention that I love their accents and for their encore, the singer and guitarist made their way into the audience and performed their final song. Quite fun, as the rest of the band.
I'm happy to see that the band are continuing their tour since the volcanic ashes caused them to cancel a few dates at the beginning. Los Campesinos! are currently on tour for their third album, Romance Is Boring, which was released earlier this year under the Wichita Recordings label.
