Deer Tick:- “More Fuel for the Fire EP”
It would be easy to write off the “More Fuel for the Fire EP” as a stop gap record, a mixed bag of outtakes rush-released to whet the appetite of the great American public, making sure that they don’t forget Rolling Stone’s “ Country Rock Break Through of the Year “ before it’s time to buy the album proper next summer.
To do so would be unfair.
Granted, the phrase “Rolling Stone’s Country Rock Break Through of the Year “ hardly inspires confidence, frankly it made me feel a little bit sick the first time I read it. However, this time they might really be onto something.
Building on that classic East Coast Alt-Country template we all know and love, “More Fuel...” ties its rock n roll colours to the mast early on.
It’s a cheeky little record, that’s for sure. Sloping in on a haze of woozy pedal steel and ordering itself a soda water, by the end of the evening the EP is telling lewd jokes, playing fast and loose with honkey -tonk piano lines and flashing its petti coats like a small town whore. “Axe is Forever” in particular sparkles, and shimmers in the sun marrying creamy country licks to vintage Buddy Holly rock n roll.
Finishing up on a live recording of “Straight into a Storm” from “Born on Flag Day”, Portland’s darlings of the blogosphere finally get a chance to cut loose, when they do, the grizzled and grungey vocal from John McCauley is worth the price of admission alone.
Don’t let the whole Rolling Stone thing put you off.
