Lara informed me that Alex Chilton passed away yesterday. She fell in love with "September Gurls" and loved Evan Dando's cover of "The Ballad of El Goodo", via the Empire Records soundtrack. Which incidentally, she just saw Evan at the 400 Bar recently.
Anyway, Chilton was in Box Tops and Big Star, and it is one of those bands that other musicians seems to really love. He's covered by The Bangles, Wilco, Graham Coxon, Garbage, Counting Crows, Elliott Smith (covered "Thirteen" for Thumbsucker), Jeff Buckley, Cheap Trick, Superdrag, Evan Dando, Cat Power, Yo La Tengo, You Am I, Placebo, Xiu Xiu, etc.
To be honest, I have not heard of him, except that I knew his name from that "I'm in love, what's that song? I'm in love, with that song." song from The Replacements' classic album, Pleased to Meet Me, but beyond that...
However, reading the song titles that Chilton wrote, I think that the Mod Lang store that Robin & I mentioned and loved might be named after a Chilton song. Previously, I have always thought that "Mod Lang" was an old 60s mod slang for "modern language".
