Don't let Chase Pagan's twentysomething age fool you, this singer/songwriter's songs sounds like it was written by someone with 100 years of experience. Pagan just appeared on Daytrotter (June 14), playing all songs from his second album, Bells & Whistles. The album was just released, June 9th, on Esperanza Plantation.
As suggested by the album title and theme, Bells & Whistles, sounds louder and happier than his debut oh, musica!. According to his latest biography, this is because he "is happily content with his station in life, snug between the walls of his mountain abode, and it's reflected in this latest work."
I find that Pagan's vocals are easy to like. He sometime shifts to falsetto (which actually someone mentioned he sounds a bit like Freddie Mercury) and sometime will fool me into thinking it's a girl singing. He does this on some songs when he's singing as the woman part, like the prostitute on the wild-west song "John & Betty" or as a loving parent who finally heard his/her child in 15 years on "The Lonely Life".
"The Lonely Life" remains my number one favorite song on Bells. "Life Garden", a piano-driven & horns number, and the very upbeat song "Better Off", both tie for number two.
Be sure to stay to the end, there is a hidden 13th untitled track. I am calling it, "It's Alright to Cry" for the time being.
Chase Pagan's Bells & Whistles is out now. You can pick it up directly from Esperanza Plantation.
