Everyone is raving about the fact that songwriter Michael Grace Jr., from the indiepop band My Favorite, has teamed up with Lisa Ronson, the daughter of Mick Ronson. I think they're focusing too much on their, er, secret histories; instead they should be talking about how great this duo is!
The Secret History is the band's name and last night they played their CD release party for their debut EP, Desolation Town, which was just released by one of my favorite record labels, Le Grand Magistery (as evident by many of my posts on Stars, Momus, Baxendale, You Bet).
If these five songs on this EP (sorry, the 30 second "Obelisk" does not count) are an indication of what's to come, I can't wait for more releases from them in the future. You can currently buy the CD via Darla, once again.
You really need to listen to the song "It's Not the End of the World, Jonah." It's shy and heady (but with a dash of fun and popiness) . I feel like I've heard this song before; you know, about getting older and crying and going out to the disco to have a good time and forget about what's dragging you down.
I like what they're doing with "Our Lady of Pompeii"; it has a rompy piano style that reminds me of old fashioned western taverns... but the mirror title of this song, "Our Lady of Palermo" is a slow-paced song with sweeping violins.
My favorites, if you'll excuse my vocabulary, are obviously the more upbeat songs, like the opening track "Jonah", "The Ballad of the Haunted Hearts" and "Mark & John (Bring on the Glitter Kids)" (with its catchy "I need to get some sleep!"). Although when I say upbeat, it's only in music tone, the theme seems to be more isolation, desolation, and awkwardness and not fitting in. Morrissey would be proud.
