Oh, Sweden. You have been so good to us. Thank you for Nikola Tesla, ABBA[W♥M], Ingmar Bergman, Jens Lekman[W♥M], Ace of Base, delicious meatballs and the most recent 'objekt' of my affection, Tobias Fröberg.
Born and raised on the island of Gotland, Fröberg became an established journalist and author by age thirty. After conducting an interview with the aforementioned Ingmar Bergman (in Sweden) and seeing Neil Young perform (in New York) in the space of 24 hours, he was inspired and finally courageous enough to scratch his itch to make music professionally. So, young(ish) and handsome Tobias dove head-first into songwriting. Three albums later, I am so happy he did.
After listening to Fröberg's most recent project, Turn Heads, it came as no surprise to me that he grew up in the middle of the sea - as it's a little up and down and side to side. The first song, "Blissful", is just what its title suggests. Let's just say if you were dancing to it, your choreography would be full of happy kicking. "Slipping Under the Radar" (the current single) packs a similar punch, reminiscent of the Cure and Members Only jackets. The rest of the album, albeit less kicky, is beautiful and sometimes melancholic - like a calm, partly cloudy day on the water. At times, Tobias channels the braveness of Rufus Wainwright and at others, the timidity of fellow Swede, José González. (Side note: fans of Peter, Bjorn and John, look for your friend Peter Moren on three tracks. Ane Brun and Kathryn Williams also make lovely appearances.)
There hasn't been a day in the past three weeks that To-Frö hasn't serenaded me with a melody or two while I stare into space in my cubicle. Turn Heads is an accomplishment Fröberg should certainly be proud of. My opinion might not mean anything to you since I am awfully easy to win over (Don't tell anyone!) but these are songs I will listen to over and over again.
