Ever since Sleater-Kinney announced that they were on "indefinite hiatus" (cough-break-up-cough), fans have been looking around for the next SK. Well look no further.
The Shondes are based out of Brooklyn, New York, and their debut album, The Red Sea, goes on sale next Tuesday, January 8th, 2008. They are having a CD-release party that Friday on the 11th at The Luna Lounge in Brooklyn.
Besides from the obvious influences (Riot Grrrls), which got a thumbs up from me, they also feature some interesting vocals. Most of the band members also sings (but not harmonizing, more like completeting each other's lyrics?).
Plus, interestingly enough, they have a violinist in the band, which makes their sound not quite DIY or punk.
The song that I felt could be a strong single for them is "What Love Is". It starts off as a guitar-driven song, but then there's a nice break in the middle. At the end of the song, you can hear some sound effects and the violinist.
I also liked "Let's Go", which you can hear on their myspace.
The Red Sea will be out next Tuesday. According to the press material, they are supposed to do a national tour to properly promote the album. I'll definitely mention any additional tour dates should I receive them, so keep your eyes here or at press.weheartmusic.com.
