Gogol Bordello is a gypsy punk band formed in the Lower East Side of New York City.
Their live shows are high energy and the songs themselves are often not in English. Many of the members of the band are immigrants coming from a range of countries including Russia, Ukraine, Israel, Ethiopia and Scotland. The song "Start Wearing Purple" can be heard in the film Everything Is Illuminated (2005) which also stars two band members-- Eugene Hütz and Pamela Jintana Racine.
Gogol Bordello's frontman Eugene Hütz also doubles as DJ Hütz. His work as a DJ and with Gogol Bordello led them to combine with members of Balkan Beat Box to work on a project they call J.U.F. (Jewish-Ukranian Freundshaft). The music from J.U.F. is quite a mix of various sounds from both groups. As Hütz himself says, "the culture of musical experience seems to be deteriorating in a way where there is only sameness. I wanted J.U.F to be extreme, so we created an alarming mixture of stuff that almost defies any sort of categorization other than WHAT THE FUCK STYLE might as well JOIN GYPSY PUNK PARTY.”
Trivia: Hütz also recently worked with director Pavla Fleischer on a documentary that traced his gypsy-roots-finding tour through Eastern Europe entitled Pied Piper of Hutzovina (2006).
Also, many thanks to Vu for uploading the songs for me!
