As children, she and her siblings listened to the radio often and heard a lot of French and American music. Her mother prohibited television, so they decided to create music to ease their boredom.
“My early childhood was filled with the music of my mother, the music of the Congo,” Daulne recalls. “We had the radio when I was growing up in Belgium, so we heard a lot of French music. And of course, American music was also very popular all over Europe. Since our mother did not want us to watch TV in our home, we entertained ourselves by creating our own music. Daulne has worked with many artists including Erykah Badu, Common, Talib Kweli, Black Thought, and ?uestlove. When asked to describe her music, she says "Zap Mama is like an essence," she says. "It is roots I put in the earth, and it's like a tree slowly grew up and wants to attach to the Western world with different kinds of music: jazz, soul and pop music. But
Her first couple of albums seem to be heavily influenced by African music. But unlike her previous releases, Supermoon features more of a pop influence. She'll be performing at this year's Voodoo Music Festival that includes acts such as Common, Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Wilco, Rage Against the Machine, The Smashing Pumpkins, and many others. Zap Mama will take the stage on October 28.
