Reformed rock band The Walkmen headlined First Avenue, in Minneapolis, on September 18.
Opening the show was shoegazing band Yeah Baby, perhaps their first time in Minneapolis. Their main singer is Hanna White, but sometime Sean Kwon would sing (in Korean?) on some songs. They were a duo, originally formed in 2016, but later Fleet Foxes’ Skyler Skjelset joined the group.
The weird thing about the First Avenue show was that someone in the audience collapsed and caused a little commotion… but the show must go on and the band had to keep playing.
Yeah Baby’s latest release is “Moonflower”, from the album Neptune Hotel, but re-released as part of their Arrangements series.
Again, we really like their sound, so we’ll try and catch them again the next time they come through town.
It’s hard to believe that New York’s The Walkmen have reformed. Since their breakup in 2013, we’ve seen lead singer/songwriter Hamilton Leithauser going solo, and the rest of the band separated to Jonathan Fire*Eater and The Recoys.
In April 2023, after the pandemic, the band got back together and played some shows in New York, with a special appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. It was so successful (most of the dates they’ve announced were sold out), that they’ve planned and added a full nationwide reunion tour: “Ok so, we are doing more shows in the fall. We truly can’t get enough. Our spring tour was such a thrill and so much better than we could have ever imagined, so we’re stretching our fall tour out a bit more. This fall we’re doing our first west coast headline shows in 10 years and also some fun ones in the midwest, including a new date in Dallas, Texas. And then back east for new shows in Boston and NJ… Thanks to everyone who’s come out so far and we’re looking forward to seeing more of you in the fall!”
Minneapolis was one of the 29 additional dates, and talking to fans who previously saw the group before, it was like a family reunion with the fans as well.
After being away for such a long, they band put together a setlist that spans over their seven studio albums, so you’re hearing songs from their debut album Everyone Who Pretended to Like Me Is Gone, to their last record Heaven from 2012.
Seeing the group on stage, with a nicely dressed Hamilton Leithauser on vocals, Paul Maroon on guitar, Walter Martin on bass, Peter Matthew Bauer on keys, and Matt Barrick on drums, it felt like they belong together.
