One of the most influential English rock band, Wire, just played the Fine Line Music Café in Minneapolis, to promote their latest album Mind Hive (pinkflag Records).

Wire’s music has always walked the line between punk/rock and electronic/atmospheric sounds. I feel most of the stark minimalism sound can be attributed to singer Colin Newman’s interests. This explains why he would take that experimental sound to his side project Immersion. Still, personally speaking, I do prefer the faster-paced, guitar-driven raw punk sound of the early Wire albums.

Anyway, the Fine Line Music Café show started off with Transmission’s DJ Jake Rudh, playing some tracks of post-punk British music.

Next up was what was billed as Wire DJs. This would be a random member from Wire. For the Fine Line show, it was Matthew Simms, spinning music from his laptop. With most DJ setups, it’s not visually an exciting thing. Simms actually sat, or sometime lay down, on the stage with his laptop. With the dancefloor filled with older fans, you actually couldn’t see him on stage unless you fight your way to the front.

Wire came on stage shortly after 9pm, and looking at the guys: Colin Newman, Graham Lewis, Robert Grey, and Matthew Simms, you can tell that these guys have been playing music for over 40 years. That is with the exception of Simms, who you can see was a lot of younger than the other guys. Simms, who was from another band called It Hugs Back, joined Wire in 2010 as a touring member.

Since their debut in 1977 with Pink Flag, the band’s been steadily and consistently writing and releasing music. Mind Hive marked their 17th studio album! While it’s easy to just do a Pink Flag anniversary tour. After all the record is called “the most original debut album to come out of the first wave of British punk” and influenced everyone from from R.E.M. (with “Strange”) to Elastica (with “Connection” and “Line Up In Line”) to Graham Coxon (with A+E album).

You have to respect the band to just decide to play one track from every one of their album, and to top it all off, five new songs from the new record Mind Hive. This wasn’t a greatest hits tour, and that’s just fine for the band, to do whatever they way without compromises… and their diehard fans appreciates that.

Legendary UK band Wire is on tour in support of their new album Mind Hive (pinkflag Records). If you were a fan of Elastica, you know that they basically stole all their best hooks from Wire (including “Line Up In Line”/“I Am The Fly” and “Connection”/“Three Girl Rhumba”).

Anyway, we were pretty excited to see Wire’s singer Colin Newman as part of his side project, Immersion, in July 2018, and wrote, “It’s hard to talk about Immersion without talking about how influential Wire is to the punk rock scene in the 1970s and 1980s. Wire, had always had a great fast-paced guitar-driven sound and great vocals from Colin Newman. The same can be said for Minimal Compact, the Israeli rock band often associated with the post-punk/indie rock sound… So if you were expecting that same art/punk/indie sound, you may be disappointed in Immersion, as they sound nothing like their predecessor.”

Opening is billed as Wire DJs (which is a rotating band members as DJ), plus local DJ Jake Rudh, from Transmission.

Brighton’s Immersion (Colin Newman and Malka Spigel) stopped by the 7th Street Entry on Thursday to play some instrumental tracks from their latest Sleepless (swim~ Records).

Local kraut/psych band Flavor Crystals opened the show. As usual, low light and minimum lyrics were on the menu for this band. I’ve mentioned before that singer Josh Richardson actually has trouble remembering some of their lyrics, so their songs are often stretched out and very long. For this night, their performance was very “droney”. That’s because Immersion’s Colin Newman asked the group to play their set without drums.

It’s hard to talk about Immersion without talking about how influential Wire is to the punk rock scene in the 1970s and 1980s. Wire, had always had a great fast-paced guitar-driven sound and great vocals from Colin Newman. The same can be said for Minimal Compact, the Israeli rock band often associated with the post-punk/indie rock sound… So if you were expecting that same art/punk/indie sound, you may be disappointed in Immersion, as they sound nothing like their predecessor.

Still, I can understand why the two wanted to do something new and different. Immersion didn’t require a full band (guitars, drum kits, etc) and didn’t require Newman to sing. Their music is more spaced out, acid, ambient, and definitely experimental.

Although the duo had a projection to show custom films, it didn’t really sync with the music, and only served as something fun to watch while you enjoy the music. Let’s face it, watching two people staring intensely down at their music machine and pushing buttons, isn’t the most exciting thing in the world. That’s not really the point in these electronic soundscape shows, it’s about going on a musical journey that the two presented in their new album Sleepless (swim~ Records).

Although one of their song “Propulsoid”, would have benefit from a live drumming from Matt Schulz ( of Holy F**k), he won’t be joining the duo until the next night (Chicago) and staying until the end of their U.S. tour.

We like the annual Basilica Block Party in Minneapolis, so we always make sure they get the spotlight whenever we do these previews. They always bring in some really good bands, and with every ticket sold, you know the money goes into maintenance and upkeep of the Basilica St. Mary.

Since there are so many bands on the bill, the Basilica Block Party divides the lineup into three stages, a large, medium, and small stage (the papa, moma, and baby bear stages as we like to call it). If you wanted to see all the bands, logistically, it’ll be pretty tough, and you’ll have to miss some songs, as the three stages goes on at different time. Check your time schedule on their website.

Wire have been around for a long time! I'm so very pleased to see that they are still making music, and having listened to their new album, Object 47, I can tell you that they are still amazing after all these years.

Since forming in 1976 in London, this band took their influences of the UK punk scene (Sex Pistols, after all was quite huge from 1975-1978), although I have never really thought of them as pure punk. They reminded me of more art rockers, with a talent for writing very catchy melodies.

Their short, but influential debut album, Pink Flag (1977), seem to have inspired a slew of bands either covering their songs (REM, The Urinals, Minor Threat) or ripping them off (Meanswe@r, Elastica, Clinic). Elastica and Wire eventually settled out of court for "Connection" infringing on "Three Girl Rhumba". With Object 47 already released in the UK (it looks like July 15^th in the US according to amazon), this will be the first studio album in over five years. The album's name comes from this is the 47^th release from Wire since their very first Mannequin EP in November 1977.

If you're a fan in the UK, you'll probably already bought the album. Here's a guide to the best songs on the album:

I absolutely thought "One Of Us" was brilliant. The bass instantly will make you move, while the lovable singing of one of us will live to rue the day we met each other will remind you of old school Wire. The song is a free download on their official website.

"Are You Ready?" should make a great object 48, as a single. Let me to try to explain the song to you, it seems to be Colin Newman asking a series of questions, and his guitar answering back.

Are you part of the future, part of the plan?
Are you willing and able to do what you can?
Are you part of the problem, or part of the band?
Are you willing to draw a line in the sand?
Are you true to your friends loyal to your brand?
Are you smoking for China, Iraq or Japan?
Are you searching for something you don't understand?
Do you still hold ambitions of being a man?

The last song is an energetic, driving song, "All Fours". It seems to build up with some excellent drumming here. It is really too bad that it doesn't just keep going on, but it does send the album to a great finish.

So what I have noticed here is that they are more or less sticking with what works here, kind of minimal guitars, bass and drums, and less art/experimental of their early 90s work, after the loss of their drummer, Robert Gotobed.

Speaking of losses, it seems that their longtime guitarist, Bruce Gilbert, was not involved on this album. They look, currently, to be a three-piece band.

Wire's Object 47 was released in the UK yesterday, July 7^th, and in the US, July 15^th. If you have always loved Wire, then you'll love the new album. They are only doing some music festivals this year, so good luck on finding a good spot to see this legendary band.

There's really no doubt about it, Elastica ripped off that "I am the Fly" chorus in their "Line Up" single. Would a 10 second rip off warrant a lawsuit?  That's exactly what I think is happening in the Rubinoo's lawsuit: they are suing for one alleged copied line in a song.

So listen to The Rubi-boos' version and Avril's "Girlfriend" (in Japanese) and can you honestly tell me they are the same song or that Avril deliberately stole their chorus?
