All-girls indie-pop quartet The Aces is out on their Under My Influence tour.

The first part of their tour will feature Madeline the Person, while the second part of the tour (starting in Minneapolis), will feature Canadian rock band The Beaches as support.

We actually saw The Beaches in May 2019 and said they stole the show from Passion Pit: “The evening’s opener was Toronto-based, why-have-you-not-played-here-sooner stunning indie rock quartet The Beaches, who not only gained a plethora of new fans, but could be considered as also having stole the entire show. The all-female foursome (sisters Jordan and Kylie Miller, with Leandra Earl and Eliza Enman-McDaniel) recently released their The Professional EP (on Universal Canada) and have a loud, empowering glam-meets-garage sound that on some faster songs, might draw comparisons to bands like The Runaways, but overall more accurately resemble a band like The Pretenders, with the musical confidence of The Stones or Struts.”

We actually missed Beach Fossils’ appearance in St Paul (at the Amsterdam Bar) in October, so I thought I will still include them on this preview… considering that the group is still on tour. The band will be releasing The Other Side of Life: Piano Ballads on November 19th, via Bayonet.

“I’ve regularly attempted to harness the feeling that I get while listening to jazz and pour it into my songs,” says the band’s Dustin Payseur. “There’s always been an element of jazz in Beach Fossils; chords are rarely played, instead the instruments typically play single-notes that come together to create chords. I think a lot of that comes from listening to jazz trios and quartets, hearing the way that the instruments weave in and out of each other, leaving space for each other, instruments coming up front for a bit while others wait.”

Wild Nothing is back with their new album Indigo (Captured Tracks). The group will headline the Cedar Cultural Center on November 7th.

We saw the band in May 2016 and said, “Wild Nothing is the brainchild of Jack Tatum (Jack & the Whale/ Facepaint). Tatum is the founding member, songwriter and the sole performer on Wild Nothing's albums but he brings a group with him on the road. This adds a strange dynamic to the group because each member seems to interpret the songs differently which makes the music much deeper than you would think a group like this would be.”

Men I Trust to open. This all-girls group from Montreal, Canada, features Jessy on bass/guitar, Dragos on keyboards and Emma vocals/guitar.

Wild Nothing (aka Jack Tatum) just headlined the Triple Rock Social Club on Monday, May 2nd, in support of his third album Life of Pause.

Charlie Hilton

Charlie Hilton opened up the show. Charlie is a female singer with a backing band that made me feel like I was by the beach in California or something. The music was calm and soothing throughout the set but still had some sort of energy to it that is unexplainable. Her haunting voice was absolutely beautiful and enough to stop you dead in your tracks. You can check out her newest album, Palana, out now via Captured Tracks.

Whitney

Whitney was the second act to play Monday night. The second they took the stage, there was something familiar about them. Come to find out that two members of this band (Max Kakacek and Julian Ehrlich) are actually former members of The Smith Westerns (RIP). These guys had joined forces with members of a few other Chicago groups to form Whitney.

Whitney's music is groovy and poppy but it's so much more than that and hard to categorize. You have a trumpet in back blaring along to the driving keyboards that are going on. You have the two keyboards battling it out in a war of beautiful sounds. Then you have the guitars and bass doing their thing and acting as the glue for the group. All of this was exciting enough to watch but then you had the singer/ drummer (Julien Ehrlich) front and center. There was really no chance of me watching anything but him.

The way he is able to drum and sing with a steady and quite beautiful voice without getting winded and out of breath just baffles me. He sat there for a good forty minutes playing non-stop and his voice never faltered. His voice belongs in a boy band but his look and charm belongs in an indie rock band. It was the perfect mix of the scenes and kept their set relevant and their band current.

Whitney's debut album Light Upon the Lake is due out early next month but was available for purchase at the show last night. Also, if you order the album online (in CD/ vinyl/ or cassette form) you will receive it May 22nd, two weeks prior to the true release date.

The show was headlined by Wild Nothing from Virginia. This band is just as hard to categorize as Whitney but they even throw in a little 80's synth pop to the mix.

Wild Nothing has three full length releases out including Life of Pause which was just released on Captured Tracks in February of this year. The group did a great job of playing songs from each album. It was nice that you couldn't really tell what album or era each song came from. It all blended nicely and let you know that this band is staying true to their style and not going anywhere anytime soon.

Wild Nothing (aka Jack Tatum) will be making a stop at the Triple Rock Social Club on Monday, May 2nd in support of his third album, Life of Pause. This album was recorded with Thom Monahan (Devendra Banhart, Vetiver) and packs a punch.

Tatum previously played in Jack and the Whale and FACEPOINT but has found his success with Wild Nothing (est. 2009). It's easy to tell why Wild Nothing received "Best New Music" from Pitchfork back in 2012 and ended up on many year-end lists. Come see for yourself!

She has just released her sophomore album Wabi-Sabi (Ba Da Bing Records) and currently touring with her husband and bandmate, Dan Duszynski, in support of the record. Supergroup The Rides is the project of two time Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Stephen Stills (you know, the “Stills” in Crosby, Stills, & Nash - and sometimes “and Young”), five time Grammy nominated guitar great Kenny Wayne Shepherd and celebrated Chicago rock/blues keyboardist Barry Goldberg. Jess and Brody from W♥M stopped in to talk about their upcoming European trip and what they are expecting. I am hoping to have them cover some shows in London when they are there from May 15th to June 3rd; we'll see how that will work out or not.

News: Daft Punk fourth studio album, Random Access Memories, out on Daft Life/Columbia Records on May 21st, 2013. Personally, I love the French dance/techno duo, been a fan since Homework in 1997. I don't know how successful their new Random Access Memories will be on their own imprint, Daft Life via Columbia Records, but millions of fans will let us know this May.


On Tour: Chicago/Minneapolis trio On an On just announced their spring tour with Savoir Adore (who we covered last year). On an On is one of those bands that got the attention of Jess, who said they look and sound amazing from their recent SXSW appearance.

On an On will kick off their tour in support of Give In this April - which I'm only listing their North American dates below. See their website for more UK and overseas dates.

New Albums: Johnny Marr's The Messenger. See previous article on his tour dates. We all love the Smiths, but can a guitarist make it as a solo artist (note: Johnny Marr + Healers tour and album didn't go too well, but I saw them in 2003). The Stokes's Come Down Machine is coming out tomorrow (March 26th). No one's heard the new album yet, but if you're a fan, you'll definitely want to pick up the Best Buy exclusive which comes with a bonus T-Shirt. Shout Out Louds' new album Optica came out last month on Merge Records.

Palma Violets' 180, according to Brody is the "best album so far." Hey, guess what? It just so happens that Palma Violet is doing a North American tour (and they are stopping by Minneapolis!)

Don’t let the cold weather keep you from checking out stellar live music! Allow the languid sounds of Brooklyn’s DIIV to warm your heart and ease your holiday-rattled mind. The band will be making a stop in Minneapolis on December 15th (their third this year alone!) They impressed Amy when she saw them open up for Frankie Rose back in April and in September they were at the Triple Rock Social Club supporting fellow shoegaze champions, Wild Nothing. They’re back at the Triple Rock again this time with spastic garage-rockers Japandroids.

Zachary Cole Smith (who has played with friends Beach Fossils as a touring guitarist) put together DIIV last year, recruiting guitarist Andrew Bailey, bassist Devin Ruben Perez, and drummer Colby Hewitt. After putting out a handful of singles, DIIV released Oshin in June of this year. The well-received album has garnered the band much interest from the indie music press and fans alike, but it’s their energetic execution of the gorgeous, reverb-y tunes at their live shows that really have people talking. D’ya notice the water themes here? Apparently, all the band members are water signs. As a Pisces, I should be in good company.
