New York City-based trio Wet is currently touring in support of their new album Letter Blue and its companion EP Letter Blue (Reprise) (AWAL), stopping by the Fine Line Music Café in Minneapolis on June 13, 2022.

New York, by the way of Texas, Hannah Jadagu opened the show. The young singer started her career by recording music on her iPhone 7 and using Garageband to edit. Some of those songs made it to her Subpop release for What is Going On?, a five-song collection from her bedroom.

She played everything off the EP, including “Bleep Bloop”, which was written during Jadagu’s first semester of senior year. In an interview, she described how it came to exist: “I couldn’t seem to sleep one night, so I just grabbed my guitar and started singing/playing what came to mind. Most of the lyrics blossomed out of a singular freestyle without much premeditation. The song both acknowledges and battles with the idea that we as young people are often expected to just ‘deal with it,’ and the lack of awareness for our mental health. ”

Highlight of her set was a cover of The Script’s “Falling to Pieces”… which she said she was in highschool when that song came out.

Jadagu ended her set with “All My Time Is Wasted.” The original single released featured backing vocals from Frankie Cosmos.

It’s hard to believe that we’ve been seeing Wet since Feb 2016, when they just released their debut album Don’t You on Columbia Records. They sold out the 7th Street Entry, and we described the show, “A dark stage and emanating low-end hum introduced Wet, touring as a four-piece (vocalist Kelly Zutrau, and multi-instrumentalists Joe Valle, and Marty Sulkow, joined by a touring drummer) to the enthralled audience. The band’s dreamy indie electronic sound takes its time to percolate, similar to UK band London Grammar, and is a soundtrack for timeless wandering in this plane of existence… and others.”

Looking at Wet’s appearances over the years (Feb 2016, Oct 2016, and Mar 2019), I can tell you that they’ve upped their game as far as stage setup. With this 2022 tour, they erected white flags with air flow to keep the flag wavering. With custom lights, they made it visually appealing and interesting to see their live show.

With Letter Blue, as Wet’s third studio album, the band re-enlisted founding guitarist Marty Sulkow (who left the group in 2017). With Sulkow coming back into the fold, hopefully the trio will produce more songs using their winning formula when they started with Neon Gold.

The first part and the last part of their set were new songs from Letter Blue, with the majority of songs from their older albums in the middle. They did save their biggest hit song, “Don’t Wanna Be Your Girl”, towards the end of the set.

The 5-track project exists in the same sonic universe as their recently released album Letter Blue, which dropped at the end of last year and the remix EP for Letter Blue released last month, which features reimagined versions of Letter Blue tracks made in collaboration with Dijon, Branchez, stud1nt and Noah Breakfast.

We caught the band in Mar 2019 and wrote, “As normal, earlier hit singles like “Don’t Wanna Be Your Girl” drew the biggest reaction from the crowd. If you enjoy xx and London Grammar, you’ll need to get onboard with Wet and see what you’re missing.”

We love British bands, so we’re very excited to see that Liverpool rock band Crawlers will be headlining the 7th Street Entry this June 14.

If you haven’t kept up, the young band, featuring Holly Minto (vocals and trumpet), Amy Woodall (lead guitar), Liv Kettle (bass guitar) and Harry Breen (drums), signed to Polydor Records in January 2022, and they’ve released a new single “I Can’t Drive” and hit single “Come Over (Again)” (over 24 million streams on Spotify).

Acclaimed French psych-rock band La Femme is touring in support of their latest Paradigmes, out now via Disque Pointu/IDOL.

We caught the band at Desert Daze 2017 and wrote, “I was really looking forward to La Femme, the psych-pop indie band from Paris. Their music is fun and cinematic, comparable to a Claude Chabrol Or Godard New Wave film filled with attitude and lust and all things Parisian. Marlon Magnee yelled out during soundcheck, “What’s up Desert Daze? Are you having fun with your kombucha and your tofu?” Meanwhile he chain-smoked while setting up for the show. Clemence Quelennec was adorable in red ninja pants and a red beret, and her voice was just spectacular in Elle ne t’aime pas. She rapped incredibly fast to Exorciseur which was fun. Their guitarist blew my mind. These guys have that je ne said quoi, you know what I mean? I’m into it. Solid buzz with the kids. Midway through their set Marlon crowd surfed and everyone was boogying and laughing under the sun.”

Originally booked at the Palace Theatre in November 1 with Dawn Richard this Purity Ring show has been rescheduled to First Avenue in Minneapolis.

The tour will help promote their new Graves EP, due out June 3rd, right at the start of their 2022 tour. It’s the first official release via the band’s own label The Fellowship.

It looks like 2/3 of Throwing Muses will be in town at the Turf Club in St Paul on June 13. As you know, originally singer/songwriter Kristin Hersh and Tanya Donelly (who went on to form The Breeders and Belly), so there’s still a lot of love for Throwing Muses.

Fred Abong replaced the original bassist of Throwing Muses in 1990, so everyone is related!

Expect Hersh to crash on Abong’s set or vice-versa.

We caught Kristin Hersh during a weird book/concert tour in May 2013 and wrote, “Anyway, in-between her songs, she read excerpts from her memoir, Rat Girl. I was wrong before, apparently Rat Girl, is basically Hersh's teenage diary, right before recording their first record. It's interesting to hear these true "adult" stories from a teenager.”

We love British bands, so we’re very excited to see that Liverpool rock band Crawlers will be headlining the 7th Street Entry this June 14.

If you haven’t kept up, the young band, featuring Holly Minto (vocals and trumpet), Amy Woodall (lead guitar), Liv Kettle (bass guitar) and Harry Breen (drums), signed to Polydor Records in January 2022, and they’ve released a new single “I Can’t Drive” and hit single “Come Over (Again)” (over 24 million streams on Spotify).

It’s a spring thing!--

Shows are definitely back, and with everyone shut-in for the past twenty months or so, there’s been a growing glut of concerts / events (and some higher prices to go with) so plan wisely.

Starlight Theater begins their busy outdoor concert season and there’s a full musical menu in the metro, with concerts from all kinds of ages and genres. 

(Several artists are still requiring precautions for entry, so check with the venue and/or assume vaccination proof and maybe a mask, is required)

Wednesday April 27

Beast in Black with Seven Kingdoms, Striker, Granada. $25  

The world of modern power metal in just one evening! Beast in Black is a Finnish-Greek-Hungarian band founded in 2015 in Helsinki by guitarist/songwriter Anton Kabanen.

Seven Kingdoms are from DeLand, FL, formed in 2007 by guitarist Camden Cruz and vocalist Bryan Edwards, after they parted with their previous band, This Solemn Vow.

Arrive early for Canadian rockers Striker, making shredtacular anthems since 2007. They’ve been recognized with JUNO, Western Canadian Music, and Edmonton Music Awards and have six studio albums including Play to Win (2018, on Record Breaking).

Disclosure released 2021’s Never Enough EP, which came on the heels of 2020 album, ENERGY, and are apparently “sitting on a wealth of exciting new music,” so expect to hear even more beats.

The Queen’s Cartoonists, Kauffman Center. $19-$49

This six-member band plays music from classic cartoons and contemporary animation, synchronized to video of the original films, with the goal of creating a concert of classical and jazz for everyone. Expect the unexpected including the Golden Age of animation, cult cartoon classics, modern video pieces, comedy and elements of a musical circus!

We last saw Valerie and band live back in 2015, but she’s returned with a brand-new indie electronic pop album, PƎP preceded by its early singles “In My Head (ft. Josh Dun),” “Salt and Vinegar,” “Real Thing (ft. Elohim),” and “Prodigal Daughter.”

The album’s title and theme emerged from an extraordinarily dark period and arrived as a mechanism to pep-talk herself through the lows of life. Its result is a road map to the kind of unapologetic self-salvation that feels both urgent and also like a joyous release.

Lee Greenwood, Prairie Band Casino, $25

We should all be more “proud to be an American” and stand together in unity, though that hasn’t exactly been in the case, of late.  The legend is out on his 40 Years of Hits Tour and has over twenty Top 10 singles, and numerous Grammy, CMA, and ACM awards to back that up. 

Last October’s 'All-Star Salute to Lee Greenwood,' featured a “who’s who” of top artists in celebration and the footage is set to produce a trio of television specials airing this year.

Sarah Harmer,  Knuckleheads, $29.50

Ontario, Canada singer-songwriter returns with an acclaimed new album, Are You Gone (via Arts & Crafts) and new single, “Little Frogs”. 

Are You Gone is a meditation on the idea of presence, and a bookend to the questions posed on her early album, You Were Here – themed a confrontation with the realities of nature and human nature.

Harmer has also become a known grassroots organizer, co-founding the citizen’s organization PERL (Protecting Escarpment Rural Land) and leading the coalition’s efforts to prevent a quarry from being built on the Niagara Escarpment.

Five decades of Pie- 2022 marks the 50^th anniversary of when the landmark song hit the top of the Billboard chart and the fabled singer-songwriter is out on tour to celebrate it. “After spending the past 18 months at home, I am thrilled to be getting back on the road with my band,” McLean said in a statement.

McLean also released a related children's book last September, "American Pie: A Fable", co-written with Judith A. Proffer and containing 40 illustrations by Yoko Matsuoka.

Alec Benjamin w Sara Kays, The Truman. $29.50-$60

Benjamin is a young Phoenix singer-songwriter whose 2018 breakthrough single "Let Me Down Slowly" reached the top 40 in over 25 countries and amassed over one billion streams on Spotify.

Arrive early for Nashville singer-songwriter Sara Kays who has a new single. “When You Look At Me” out via Atlantic Records, the demo of which quickly became very popular on TikTok. 

Megadeth and Lamb of God with Trivium and In Flames,     T-Mobile Center $29.50-$99.50

The "Metal Tour of the Year "returns after a pandemic postponement thru 2021, due to wrap in mid-May.  “Do not miss out," commented Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine, and their long-awaited new album is expected out later this year. All four metal acts are solid and seasoned live.

The Elders with The Canterberries, Knuckleheads. $27.50

Funded in 1998 by six with a passion for Americana and Celtic folk rock, the group brings together the art of storytelling with elements both musically progressive and tradition rooted.

Their 8th studio album, True, features story lines with narratives that explore history, legends, tall tales and true-life experiences, along with a few instrumentals.

The Boundless Tour now continues into the fall for Bridges’ first headlining amphitheater and arena dates, but the lucky few who nabbed tix this more intimate theater show (been sold out for ages) can consider themselves lucky. 

Debut album Coming Home was more retro-soul (we caught him early-on, in 2015) but he’s since morphed into more of a neo-soul sound on the more recent Gold-Diggers Sound album, which only seems to be gaining Bridges even more fans.

Idol champion and CMT Award winner Scotty McCreery is one of current country music’s most popular over the last decade, including a streak of four consecutive No. 1 hits: “Five More Minutes,” “This is It,” “In Between,” and recent, “You Time.” He recently released his fifth album, Same Truck, which features his new single (by George!), “Damn Strait.”

The classic Italian tragedy full of lies, lust, and corruption by Puccini is brought to life by the Lyric Opera of Kansas City and runs through May 8 (a possible early Mothers’ Day present?).  For Rome’s celebrated opera singer, Tosca, all is not well. Fueled by jealousy, the Chief of Police pursues her artist lover for alleged treasonous acts, pausing only to pursue Tosca with a decidedly different set of acts in mind.

We caught them in Minneapolis very recently, and were gutted to hear that initial support act, Mercury Rev, chose to bow out over Covid concerns.  Twin Cities’ Magic Castles does continue to open.

The multi-winning Grammy and Academy Award-winning singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist H.E.R. has embarked on a 19-city run of her Back of My Mind Tour, and it’s lucky that KC is a stop.  There is a natural talent about her (similar to a younger Alicia Keys) with so much more to come musically, you know Prince would have championed her, if he was still with us.  That feeling is mutual, as H.E.R. often works a purple guitar riff or even cover song, into her set. 

R&B singer/songwriter Marzz recently released their new single “KMS” via Keep Cool/RCA Records.

Patty Griffin, Liberty Hall

The two-time Grammy Award winning folk singer-songwriter is celebrating the 25th anniversary of her album Living With Ghosts, as well as the success of her tenth studio recording, 2019’s self-titled LP.

Expect a healthy helping of classics from her three+ decade career and just maybe even a Springsteen cover or two, as she covered “Jungleland” recently in NYC, and before that, even did a five-song cover encore.

L’Chaim! It’s the heartwarming story of fathers and daughters, husbands and wives, and life, love and laughter. This classic musical has plenty of hits, we know that you know - “If I Were A Rich Man,” "Sunrise, Sunset,” "Matchmaker, Matchmaker,” and “Tradition.”

The original Broadway production of Fiddler opened in 1964, and was the first musical in history to surpass 3,000 performances. It also won the 1965 Tony Award for Best Musical(in addition to eight others that year), and this revival introduces a new generation to the iconic and adored classic.

The co-headlining Wet and Kilo Kish stopped by the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis on Friday, March 15th.

Opening the show, and previously not announced, was California’s Hana Vu. She’s playing solo, which is quiet different from her full-band setup at the 7th Street Entry in Sep 2018: “The 18-year-old is joined on stage by guitarist Christian Wright, bassist Sebastian Jones, and drummer Jair Hernandez. After spending 30 hours driving in a car, Hana Vu was happy and relieved to finally play for us. Although Vu had written and recorded three albums (about 30 songs) since 2014, this was the first time the group went out on a national tour, with the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis a first stop for the band.”

The 7th Street Entry was special because, according to Hana Vu, it was her first time playing outside California. She was invited to play the Wet/Kilo Kish show, so she took the opportunity, and announced that her Varsity Theater appearance would be second to her last appearance on this tour.

Near the end of her set, playing “Team”, she thanked the audience for showing up early to check out her brief 25-min set.

Next was co-headliner, Kilo Kish (aka Lakisha Kimberly Robinson), who played a surprisingly long 45-min set (considering that she only officially released Reflections in Real Time in 2016). However, if you look back at her history, you’ll find that she’s been writing and producing music since the age of 18 (in 2012) and probably had over 40 plus tracks under her belt.

Playing in constant near darkness with backlit flashing lights, Kish mentioned that she’s basically playing the entire Mothe EP live. Kish, with the help of her DJ/Producer, was always creating a “new live production of all the songs”.

Brooklyn’s Wet closed out the show at the Varsity Theater. The band played a good mix of songs between their debut Don't You (2016) and Still Run (2018). Originally a trio, featuring Kelly Zutrau, Joe Valle, and Marty Sulkow, but currently it’s just Zutrau and Valle, with touring synth and drummer.

Although Still Run came out in July 2018, via Columbia Records, the band didn’t do a proper album promo tour until earlier this year. That is because they spent last year opening for Florence + The Machine, which, on a sonic level, they do share an indie pop/electronic pop sound to complement Florence.

As normal, earlier hit singles like “Don’t Wanna Be Your Girl” drew the biggest reaction from the crowd.

Metal legends Slayer is headlining the Armory this Thursday, presented by 93x and Live Nation. Slayer are one of the Rushmore of metal, right up there with Metallica, Megadeth and Anthrax. The band announced that 2018 will be their “Farewell Tour”, and if you’ve never seen them live, this is your final chance to jump at the opportunity.

Originally booked at the smaller 7th Street Entry, Shilpa Ray’s show got upgraded to the much larger mainroom, where she’ll share the stage with local favorites Night Moves, Anonymous Choir, and Wellness. We saw Ray in Sep 2015 and wrote, “Opening the evening was Brooklyn resident Shilpa Ray and band, who previously toured with her own blues rock band, the Happy Hookers. After a 2013 EP, the band returned this year with full-length, Last Year’s Savage (Northern Spy Records) and dazzled with a 40 min. performance that channeled Natalie Merchant or Norah Jones with a dash of Patti Smith, fronting Alabama Shakes.”

We previously caught him in April 2015 and said, “While I felt King Tuff's music was different from Father John Misty, they were a lot of fun and won over the audience by the end of their 45-min set. Brooklyn’s Wet headlined the Triple Rock Social Club last Thursday, October 27th.

Opening up the show was 18-year-old Atlanta-based Demo Taped. The singer, producer has been compared to Frank Ocean, and I can see why after seeing him play.

Armed with just a laptop and a microphone, Demo Taped seemed comfortable on tour, especially after only touring for the first time with Vallis Alps earlier this March 2016.

Songs on Demo Taped’s set included various introspective love songs from his Heart EP, including ‘Your Touch’... but throwing in new “demos” like his recent ‘Game On’ (which ended his 35-min set).

Kelly Zutrau

Normally, Wet is a trio, consisting of Kelly Zutrau, Joe Valle, and Marty Sulkow, but for their live shows, they’ve employed a drummer (not introduced).

Although the band is new, Kelly and Marty actually met in college and formed a band called Beauty Feast. The band broke up and, after a time in 2012, they formed Wet. That particular time, Kelly broke up with her boyfriend and the depression help them focus on the type of music and vision for the band.

We caught the band earlier in February 2016 and wrote, “The band’s dreamy indie electronic sound takes its time to percolate, similar to UK band London Grammar, and is a soundtrack for timeless wandering in this plane of existence… and others.”

Setlist

In a typical one-album band show, the band proceeded to play almost everything on their debut record Don't You (Columbia Records), including their biggest hit songs ‘Don't Wanna Be Your Girl’ and ‘Island’. Fans hoping to hear new songs can rest now as for this tour, the band previewed a demo song during their encore. It currently doesn’t have a title, but expect it to be on their forthcoming Don’t You (Autoharp Demos) EP.

As previously mentioned, Wet’s fans are plenty and they are so passionate about the trio. Watching the audience (mostly young people) in love with Wet is just as fun as watching Wet performing on stage.

Needtobreathe is back in Minnesota... this time playing at the much-bigger The Roy Wilkins Auditorium this Thursday, October 27th.

The last time the band was in town in 2015, we wrote, “South Carolina’s Needtobreathe continues to evolve as performers and grow its fan base, even since we recently last saw them live. The band, led by brothers Bear and Bo Rinehart and bassist Seth Bolt is still in support of their latest; Rivers in the Wasteland (Atlantic/Curb/Word Records) and headlined this Tour de Compadres (“Tour of Friends”) with a 79 min. closing set, shortened from their usual time which resulted in a few abridged versions of songs and a compressed playlist.”

Parachute to open. The trio is touring in support of Wide Awake, which debuted #1 on the iTunes Pop Albums and #40 on the Billboard Top 200!

The band previously sold out their April 2016 headlining gig at the Varsity Theater.

Show up early to check out Demo Taped. The 18 year old Atlanta based artist is described as a cross between Frank Ocean and Chet Faker - if it were recorded or produced by Dev Hynes.

Simple Minds sang “Don’t You Forget About Me” some thirty years ago—

-and up-and-coming Brooklyn alt-pop band Wet just played an intimate and very sold out 7^th St Entry over the weekend, in support of their own just-released debut album, Don’t You (Columbia Records).  Based on crowd reactions to their 55min headlining performance, we won’t be forgetting Wet anytime soon.

The evening opened with North Carolinian to NYC cellist/singer Kelsey Lu, playing an ethereal 45 min. set of soul-tinged experimental dream pop, amongst  little lighting.  In fact, the glint of her triangular shaped earrings and piping along the brim of her hat, were the most defined image we could see for most of her intimate and hushed set.

She was vocally appreciative of the audience being generally respectful and quiet through songs like ‘Morning After Coffee’, ‘The Bend’, and a song dedicated to her grandmother.  Looping her own sounds to build a song, Lu moved from cello to guitar in her second half with equally dramatic results.  With a self-released EP coming and being one of Questlove/Okayplayer’s 16 to Watch for 2016, the future seems bright indeed.

Our loss for not catching Wet on their last couple times in town (2014 at the Entry and 2015 at the Cedar opening for Tobias Jesso Jr.), a mistake we won’t make again.  Maybe it was because their name makes them difficult to find info online (almost too simple a name in the internet age, like bands The Men, The The, Garbage, etc), though the band obviously recognizes this, cheekily parking their website at kanyewet.biz.

A dark stage and emanating low-end hum introduced Wet, touring as a four-piece (vocalist Kelly Zutrau, and multi-instrumentalists Joe Valle, and Marty Sulkow, joined by a touring drummer) to the enthralled audience.  The band’s dreamy indie electronic sound takes its time to percolate, similar to UK band London Grammar, and is a soundtrack for timeless wandering in this plane of existence… and others.

The brooding easy lyrics of ‘Deadwater’ and its opening lines “If I could be stronger and if you were just older, we might last this out longer but the task just gets harder” had the faithful singing along and singer Zutrau swayed slowly in her white oxford shirt while electronic drums and echoed jangly guitar framed the vocals.

Vocalist Zutrau didn’t speak much between songs, maybe partly to keep the ambiance intact, and partly because she admitted late in the set, that she was battling a bad cold.  The sound of crickets chirping in the background weren’t due to any silence before ‘These Days’; rather, were part of the song’s intro, an aching slow burn of optimism.

‘Don’t Want to be Your Girl’ was recognized immediately by the crowd when played mid-set, one of the band’s earliest songs to break out.  ‘All the Ways’, the band’s newest single brought tempo up a bit with Zutrau jokingly threatening to fight someone after the song, frustrated somewhat by the band’s winter touring – “I’m sick, we’ve been on the road two weeks, the van sucks… but we’re here for you!”, she said smiling. “I’m just kidding”.

The band ended their night with the song they had played on The Tonight Show last month, ‘Weak’ and its lyric, “You get me out of my head;  You get me out of my mind;  You get me out of my dreams”, which describes the music of Wet rather perfectly.  Based on their performance, we won’t be forgetting them anytime soon.
