Sunflower Bean’s first headlining gig at the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis took place last Tuesday, April 5th.
Local brother/sister band Brilliant Beast (Hannah and Jordan Porter) opened up the show, playing mostly new materials from their recent Dissolve EP ... which is, according to the band, only available on cassette and digital. Hannah is also in several other bands, including Vats, which we also noted at the Ringo Deathstarr show in July 2015 (which incidentally Jordan was proudly their T-Shirt).
Next up was Toronto’s Weaves, with a forthcoming debut album from Buzz Records, Memphis Industries, and Kanine. In just two short years, Weaves went from a collection of voice memos on singer Jasmyn Burke’s iPhone to becoming the face of Toronto’s fertile and multifaceted DIY scene. Originally with just Burke and Morgan Waters, they added bassist Zach Bines and drummer Spencer Cole to become a full band in late 2013.
All the music critics are calling Weaves a “band to watch”, and it’s easy to see why when you hear them play their old single “Tick” to new single “One More”.
Since we last saw Sunflower Bean last October 2015, the band released their debut album Human Ceremony (Fat Possum) and came back as headliner - now seasoned with a year of touring. And it shows. The trio (Jacob Faber, Julia Cumming, and Nick Kivlen) seemed completely at eased on stage, with Cumming looking and sounding more confident than their previous appearance. Even their music is a lot more upbeat (and possibly even aggressive), playing almost everything on their debut album... and especially when they announced they were playing some new (unrecorded) songs.
Midway in their set, Cumming said that she met her cousin before the show. They had no idea they had relatives living in the Twin Cities, but we can probably expect the band to return to reunite with their long lost family in the future. And based on the terrific turnout at the 7th Street Entry, we can count that this will not be Sunflower Bean’s last Minneapolis appearance.
They ended their set with “Easier Said” and “The Stalker”, leaving no encores, but that’s to be expected with a young band with only about a dozen songs under their belt.
The trio is really excited to announce that they’ll be playing Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza this year... and with Cage The Elephant and Portugal. The Man on some upcoming dates.
