Has it really been ten years? Where did those days just disappear? Lucius is out celebrating their anniversary of Wildewoman, stopping by Thursday, January 25th. They’ve also been asked to headline annual The Current Anniversary Celebration.

Of course, we were one of the first people to see Lucius at their first appearance in Minneapolis on 24 Oct 2013 when they were touring for Wildewoman: “Turnout to the Lucius show was terrific, for a Thursday night. It tells me that the next time the New York band come back around, that they're going to play a bigger venue, especially if they continue with their catchy 60s girl-group songs. Led by the two girl singers, Jess Wolfe & Holly Laessig, who dressed alike, look alike, and sings alike. They made it clear that they were extremely grateful to be in Minneapolis for the first time (although one of their guitarists said he has family here and would visit every Summer when he was younger). As you can see from their setlist, the band played every song known to them. So if you've been listening to their EP and album Wildewoman, you will have a fantastic time.”

Red Van Records singer-songwriter Levi Hummon announces his headlining Another Shot Tour… stopping by the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis on January 26, 2024.

“I can’t wait to get back on the road. I have built a really special team over the last year and lots of new fans across socials,” said Hummon. “I’m so excited to play some of the new music we’ve been working on and the brand new version of 'Paying For It.'”

Hummon is referring to a new a studio version of “Paying For It” with Walker Hayes, his debut song for Red Van Records. Originally recorded and released in 2021, Hummon has been playing the song since that time while on the road, and it has become a fan favorite and viral hit.

As of this writing, no opening band listed.

This co-headlining Mary Chapin Carpenter and Shawn Colvin was originally sold out on October 13… but for whatever reasons, the show is now rescheduled for January 26, 2024, at the Pantages Theatre.

Mary Chapin Carpenter and Shawn Colvin are longtime friends and have already toured extensively earlier in October. These make-up dates are one-off, but the two will reunite once again for the Pantages show.

Carpenter needs no introduction. She has sold over 16 million records, has won five Grammy Awards (with 18 nominations), two CMA awards, two ACM awards, and one of the few female members of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Shawn Colvin has her first Grammy awards for her debut album Steady On, in 1989, and has since established herself as a mainstay of the contemporary folk music scene ever since. Shawn was recently recognized for her career accomplishments when she was honored with the 2016 Lifetime Achievement Trailblazer Award by the Americana Music Association.

Hip-hop enthusiasts have reason to celebrate as the dynamic rap duo Snotty Nose Rez Kids (Yung Trybez and Young D) launches their major label debut with the release of “I Got Paid Today” (featuring beats by Boogey The Beat) … and to celebrate, they’re expanding their Hot Planet Tour and will be stopping by the Fine Line Music Café in Minneapolis on January 26, 2024.

“We really wanted to capture that feeling when you just get paid and you're thinkin’ 'bout all the ways you're gonna spend that money, but also that low feeling when you're broke again and gotta wait around till that next payment comes in. We brought in our homies, Tia Wood and Lex Leosis, for vocals on the track and they really brought a new energy to the song,” said Yung Trybez.

Country Stampede at the Heartland is an outdoor music festival featuring country music stars, camping, and more in Topeka, Kansas at Heartland Motorsports Park, held annually since 1996. Due to flooding concerns, the event moved to its current location from Manhattan, KS in 2019.

For its first full day, the heat index was in the triple-digits, but fans were still enthusiastic and eager for live music and the collective social gathering that a festival is.

Georgia native Lily Rose opened the afternoon with her blend of vulnerable lyrics and R&B leanings, highlighted by a Keith Urban cover and her breakout hit, “Villian”.

Kansas native Jerrod Neimann returned to his home state, a veteran of the festival having seen the first five as a fan and playing a previous 7 or 8 times. “Yellow Brick Road” was sung in honor of his home state, the country rap of “Donkey” returned to his setlist, and Hank Jr., Jimmy Buffett and Alabama covers ended his set.

North Carolina favorites Parmalee played their many radio hits along with a bevy of covers- Usher, Lizzo, The Killers, The Kid Leroi and Train versions were peppered in, along with a quick “Happy Birthday” to two separate fans up front.

New single, “Y’all Life” had just dropped earlier that day and is already climbing the charts.

As expected, the month of December winds down as the end of the month approaches, but the weather has generally been above average and there’s still a handful of shows to celebrate the season with, in the Kansas City metro. 

Nearby Lawrence is mostly quiet, due to students gone for winter break and due to the ongoing pandemic, nothing too noteworthy is in the area for New Years Eve, so you’re on your own. 

More acts and venues are requiring proof of vaccination for entry and check their social pages before heading out, in case of some last-minute change of plans. Happy Holidays!

Here’s what’s happening in the area for the Second half of December:

Thursday December 16

Samantha Fish, The Truman, $25-$30.
Kansas City’s own rising Blues and Roots guitarist returns for a hometown show that should be all kinds of special.  Faster (on Rounder Records) is her seventh studio release and even features fellow KC breakout star Tech N9ne on a track suitably called “Loud”. 

Gary Gulman, Madrid. $25-$35
The veteran 6’ 6” comedian returns to live stand-up on the heels of a highly acclaimed 2019 HBO special, in which he opened up about his depression and anxiety issues, and fun fact, had a small role in the recent Joaquin PhoenixJoker film.

Old Crow Medicine Show and Molly Tuttle (90.9 The Bridge's Xmas Show), Uptown Theater, $35-$75.
The Nashville-based string band has a new album called Paint This Town coming soon on ATO Records, so expect a preview of some of those songs and the night is a treat for all Americana and Bluegrass fans, with Tuttle, a California banjo/guitar player opening, who collaborated earlier this year with Bela Fleck on song, “My Bluegrass Heart”.

Friday December 17

Jackyl Family Reunion, Arvest Bank Theatre at the Midland. $17-$22
Jessie James Dupree and friends return to where they filmed a similar Dec 2019 concert for home video/CD release, out last year.  Last time they brought special guest Daryl (DMc) McDanielout for a few Run-DMC classics and while that isn’t scheduled, a roaring chainsaw and holiday debauchery will be present, as usual.

Saturday December 18

Tommy Emmanuel with Andy McKee, Arvest Bank Theatre at the Midland. $35-$65
A rare chance to see two of the finest acoustic guitarists playing today – 66 year-old Australian Emmanuelhad two records out this year, Imagine and Live from the Balboa Theatre (on CGP) while McKee grew up in nearby Topeka and released his Symbol EP after a series of virtual Facebook Live weekly concerts to stay busy during lockdown.

Making Movies (covering Radiohead’s Kid A), The Truman. $25-$40
Everything’s In Its Right Place as the area’s premier Afro Latino/Psych rock band take on Radiohead’s seminal 2000 album.  Blvck Hippie and The Republic Tigers are scheduled as support. 

The Floozies, Uptown. $25-$45
Lawrence-based party band led by brothers Mark and Matt Hill bring their blend of electronica and funk and have a holiday-related album, Miracle on Funk Street, out now to celebrate the season with good vibes.

Walker Hayes, MO Country- Grain Valley (long sold out)
Without a doubt, Hayes’ TikTok dance craze /musical advert for Applebees single, “Fancy Like” has been the breakout song of the fall, and fans were quick to snap up tix to see him in this relatively small venue.  Full album is out early next year, and he’s already been confirmed for Country Stampede in Topeka in summer 2022.

Just two days before Christmas, legendary comedian Chase heads to Topeka (??) for a Q+A and screening of modern classic Christmas Vacation.  VIP packages are available, but due to the pandemic, up close photos/meet-and-greets are not guaranteed, though reports of Chase working a chicken restaurant’s drive-thru before a recent South Carolina show, shows he’s not afraid of much.

Trans-Siberian Orchestra (two shows), T-Mobile Center, $46-$97.
Speaking of arena-filling acts, this pioneering symphonic/prog metal group plays not one but two shows celebrating twenty-five years since their 1996 debut, Christmas Eve and Other Stories.  Growing out of a collaboration between late producer/arranger Paul O’Neill and members of Savatage, the project’s success is truly phenomenal, having started playing arenas and selling more than ten million tickets and albums over the years.

I ran into some Gary Numan fans at the recent John Carpenter show and they were talking about how much they love Numan. This Brooklyn-based nine-piece Turkuaz is headlining the Cabooze in Minneapolis this Wednesday.

Show up early to check out soul-inspired band The Suffers. We previously caught them in 2015 and wrote, “Make Some Room is not only the title of the recent EP from The Suffers (on Rhyme and Reason Records), but was also the edict as the band and venue’s personnel tried to clear enough stage space for all ten members. With percussionists and guitarists wedged in back, and the horn section, keys and bass up front, the band managed to make it work and make the audience work a little too, during their hour-long set.”

Canada’s Wolf Parade (Arlen Thompson, Dante DeCaro, Dan Boeckner, and Spencer Krug) is back with their first album in seven years (the band went dark in 2010 and only recently reemerged)!

Wolf Parade’s Cry Cry Cry came out earlier this month on Sub Pop.

Show up early to check out New York’s Charly Bliss. Their debut Soft Serve EP will be reissued on vinyl in November via Barsuk Records.

We previously caught Charly Bliss at July 2015 and May 2012 and wrote, “Hendricks and band came out charging for their forty-five minute set, with the opening ‘Percolator’, she vocally kickboxing into the song with a girlish, slightly squeaky vocal, instead of actually kickboxing as she does in the music video of the song.”
