Super Furry Animals
I have seen Super Furry Animals at Coachella before... the only thing I can remember was that they were on early on the bill and that they dedicated “Mountain People” to the mountains.

SUPER FURRY ANIMALS
at Varsity Theater
Thursday, 07/14/16, 7pm ($21.50/$25)
varsitytheater.org
True confession: for a long time, I thought the band was called Super Fury Animals.
Welsh psychedelic rock band
Super Furry Animals is back on tour. Although their lead singer/songwriter
Gruff Rhys has been to Minneapolis numerous times, SFA’s last Minneapolis show was at the Varsity Theater on February 15, 2008. As you know, I famously do not attend shows in the Winter... so we’re super excited to see SFA here in the Summer.
The July dates are actually rescheduled from their previous May tour dates - which were lost due to the last minute cancellation of the Levitation Festival.
The last time I saw the band, they played at
Coachella in 1999 and pointed and dedicated ‘Mountain People’ to the mountains.
Anyway, although SFA’s re-issued
Mwng recently, it’s probably not heavily promoted in the USA on account that the album is exclusively in Welsh.
The band’s last album
Dark Days/Light Years came out in 2009.
As of this writing, no opening band is listed.
Tour dates:
7/14 Minneapolis, MN @ Varsity Theater
7/15 Milwaukee, WI @ Turner Hall
7/16 Chicago, IL @ Pitchfork Fest
7/17 Ferndale, MI @ Loving Touch
7/19 Toronto, ON @ Opera House
7/21 New York, NY @ Webster Hall
7/22 Philadelphia, PA @ Union Transfer
7/23 Washington, DC @ 9:30 Club
7/24 Cambridge, MA @ The Sinclair

SWANS
at Fine Line Music Cafe
Thursday, 07/14/16, 7:30pm ($25)
finelinemusic.com
We wrote about the avant-rock band
Swans in
2014 when their debut album was remastered for a new vinyl release.
The band is back on tour in support of their new
The Glowing Man album. The touring band currently features original singer/guitarist Michael Gira, original guitarist Norman Westberg, guitarist Christoph Hahn (from mid-period Swans-era), drummer Phil Puleo (from Swans’ final tour-era), bassist Chris Pravdica, and keys Paul Wallfisch.
The tour may be a last ‘Swan song’ for the band, as after this current tour, singer Gira said, “I’ll continue to make music under the name Swans, with a revolving cast of collaborators… touring will definitely be less extensive.”
Okkyung Lee to open.
