Kasabian is releasing a new album in 2014
Earlier this year Kasabian's frontman Tom Meighan said to NME: "The album is a real 'f*** you' to anyone who ever dares criticise or snarl at us, and say we can't do music like this. It's a real f***ing 'up yours'. There are a lot of bands who try and do this kind of music but fail because they've got no songs."

Vivian Girls break up
Vivian Girls have official split up. The two farewell shows will be on Feb 14 in Los Angeles and Mar 1st in Brooklyn. We briefly talked about The Babies and La Sera.

Prince files lawsuit against his fans (again)
Prince wants 22 individual offenders to pay him a sum of $1 million each.

The lawsuit, which was filed last week, accuses the defendants of participating in “massive infringement and bootlegging of Prince’s material”, specifically picking out a set from 1983 which was shared via WorldOfBootleg.blogspot.com.

UPDATE 01/29/14: Prince has decided to drop the lawsuit. According to tmz.com, because "the bootleggers have now taken down the illegal downloads and are no longer engaging in piracy." Although some people say it's a publicity stunt, and some people say it's because of the bad press surrounding this.

I got this sad announcement today.

Vivian Girls have official split with the announcement of farewell shows in NY & LA. This actually didn't surprise me, as the girls in the band all had their own solo projects: Katy with La Sera (new album due later this year), Cassie with The Babies and solo work, and Ali with Upset.

Hi friends, Brooklyn, New York, March 2007: we started making music together and became what we know as Vivian Girls. It's been a long and crazy journey in the seven years since, and we feel as though the time has finally come to let our band rest in peace. It's been an experience that we'll look back on and cherish and we'd like to thank you for sharing it with us. We have had such an amazing time being a band, touring the world, releasing records and meeting all of you. We've booked some ALL AGES shows as a goodbye. The first will be on February 14th at The Church on York in LA. The second will be on March 1st at Death by Audio in Brooklyn. La Sera: Sees the Light

Read More La Sera Since I have been enjoying what I've heard from Vivian Girls, I was rather excited to find out that their bassist, Katy Goodman, is involved in another project, La Sera. I can tell you that the first time I heard La Sera's self-titled debut album, it was such a relief to hear this lushy dreampop sound from Vivian Girls' Katy "Kickball Katy" Goodman. I love it, but I have always thought it was just a one-off side project, that is until I saw that she just released Sees The Light in March 2012 via Hardly Art Records. If you haven't heard the new album, check out these free MP3s: "Please Be My Third Eye" "Break My Heart" As I understand it, while the debut album was dreamy with layered vocals, Sees The Light is more like an aggressive soundtrack to a drive-in movie. When asked about her influences, Goodman said, "My main musical influence is definitely '60s pop - The Shirelles, Roy Orbison and The Beatles. I love writing two-minute pop songs with big choruses and a lot of seventh chords." The "two-minute pop song" and "oldies" sound is right-on as Dan, who caught them at SXSW 2012 reported this: "La Sera: Good 4 piece pop band from Los Angeles. They play three minute pop songs with jangly guitars. Both guitarists can play lead; one tends to favor a surf sound in his solos. Think The Ventures and you get the idea. I'm having a hard time judging her voice. She is buried in the mix. I do like them and will hear most of the set." I covered musician Viet Khang's unfairly jailed for performing two protest songs; the story was largely ignored by mainstream media. A similar story happened with Russian punk group Pussy Riot being jailed for performing "Virgin Mary, Please Drive Putin Away" song in front of a church. A peaceful demonstration, but the Russian courts deemed necessary to sentence three members of the band (Maria Alekhina, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, and Ekaterina Samucevich) in jail for two years.

As you've guessed, the mainstream press and all fellow musicians and activists are extremely upset by the unfairness Pussy Riot suffered at the hands of Vladimir Putin's rule.

Pussy Riot recently shared a new protest song, "Putin Lights Up the Fire," on guardian.co.uk.

Yes, of course, I'm pretty upset about this. So is the world. For example, JD Samson (of MEN and Le Tigre), organized a court room statement reading last week. Supporters and readers included Chloë Sevigny, Eileen Myles, Karen Finley, Johanna Fateman, Mx Justin Vivian Bond, and others.

There was also a protest march and rally last Friday. Check out the video march on youtu.be.

Vivian Girls will be playing a benefit show for Pussy Riot at The Smell in Los Angeles on 8/27 (that's this MONDAY.) If you can make it out/if you live in the area, all proceeds from the $10 show will go directly to the Pussy Riot Legal Defense Fund. Joining the all-girls band will be Pangea, Haim and the appropriately-named Kremlin Head.

I don't have any writes based in south California, but I would really love if someone could send me a report and photos of the event.

I love 90s riot grrrls, so when I was told that this all-girls action riot band was coming around Minneapolis, I was all over it.

I did some checking up on this band, it looks like the band formed in 2005 in Ohio as Vanity Pledge. Some girls came in, some girls went out, I don't know all the musical chair, all I know is that they have a hard time keeping their bassist.

Their final bassist is one Lalaine, who you might know from Lizzie McGuire, she played Lizzie's best friend, Miranda Sanchez.

The band described themselves as "somewhere between the work of Sleater-Kinney and the Ting Tings", I do love both bands, but having listened to remixes of "Anatomy" and "Limb From Limb", I think I prefer the more DIY. But then again, I'm generally not a fan of remixes. I'll have to listen to more of their songs to determine what they are, but at the moment, they sound a little too electro-dancey.

Anyroad, their new album, Get What You Came For is available now digitally via Vigilante Music/Adamant Records. The physical CD is coming on March 1^st, hopefully, I'll try and get a copy to review. Based on hearing the original mix of "Anatomy", I am excited to hear more.

Oh how I love "Je Veux Te Voir"!

Julie Budet, aka Yelle, is in New York for Fashion Week, so I'm sure you'll see her in loads of magazines.

Her band will be doing a ton of dates in North America in mid-April through May, so be sure to see them while you can. The last time she was here, their shows sold-out, so be sure to get tickets early.

Anyway, the band has a new single, "Safari Disco Club", which can be downloaded for free on soundcloud.com. As much as I'm trying to like it, I'm not exactly feeling it right away. Maybe it's one of those songs that you have to play a lot to understand it... at the moment, it just feels like their sold-out "Doves" commercial song (they basically wrote a song about the product).

I haven't heard anything else from their new album, but I've read they covered Robyn ("Who's That Girl") and recently remixed Katy Perry's "Hot n Cold".
