 Closing in on finishing their first decade together, Vintage Trouble still “can’t stop rollin’” as the Los Angeles foursome returned to the area, playing to an enthusiastic crowd at the Amsterdam Bar & Hall in downtown St. Paul.

The evening’s openers were Queens, NY rock band Hollis Brown, named after a classic Bob Dylan song (“The Ballad of Hollis Brown” but probably still get the inevitable question of which one’s Hollis). Mike Montali (vocals/guitar) and Jonathan Bonilla (lead guitar) head the band, alongside Andrew Zehnal (drums) and Adam Bock (keys/vocals) and their latest release is Ozone Park, released in June.

The band has previously supported the likes of Counting Crows, Citizen Cope, Heartless Bastards, and Jesse Malin and plays music in a similar vein to those acts and was well received by the Amsterdam crowd, with the band capping its generous 45-minute set by playing its homage to the legendary actor nicknamed The Duke, ‘John Wayne’.

The audience swelled as the set break was ending and lights framed the Vintage Trouble logo backdrop at center stage. Their local audience has steadily grown, thanks in part to previous high-profile appearances such as opening for The Who and playing the Chipotle Cultivate Festival, as well as good word of mouth from their own memorable headlining shows.

The new album is actually two EPs, Chapter II – EP I and EP II (on McGhee Entertainment), each with both electric and acoustic versions of new songs that represent a more modern sound, versus the retro-soul powered blues rock of their previous albums.

The foursome’s (Ty Taylor -vocals; Nalle Colt – guitar; Rick Barrio Dill- bass; Richard Danielson- drums) wardrobe has slightly changed as well, slightly less structured and not wearing ties (at least this night), though still stylish and dapper, and the quartet entered as they always have – gathering for an encouraging huddle and shaking each other’s hands, before cutting loose for their ninety-minute set.

“Get your hands together!” swaggering singer Taylor intro’d, but the audience didn’t need any additional encouragement, already in the mood for a good time. Danielson’s rapid beat and Dill’s bass anchored the opening song, further riling up the audience and (Viggo Mortensen lookalike) guitarist Colt was in his usual understated but fine form all night.

“Can we dance together in this room?’ Taylor asked as the swaying ‘Doin’ What You Were Doin’ followed, with Taylor noticing the snow on the ground and saying “the best part of it being cold outside, is to be warm inside together” cuing up a classic-sounding ballad, ‘My Whole World Stopped Without You’.

The grinding ‘Pelvis Pusher’ was played early in the set, rounded out more wholly with the help of a new female touring vocalist, and the new songs began with one of the very newest, a slow burner released online just a week prior, called ‘Can’t Let Go’.

The small club was transformed into a juke joint for the new ‘Can’t Stop Rollin’ and exhilarating classic ‘Run Like the River’ found singer Taylor literally everywhere in the club– high-fiving patrons as he went from corner to corner, eventually standing on a back table to dive into the crowd and get carried on fans’ hands, back to the front stage.

One of Taylor’s biggest musical heroes are Booker T. Jones and Otis Redding, and the two influences came together as Jones asked Taylor to cover Redding’s ‘These Arms of Mine’ on his new record, which the band reproduced live, both faithfully and soulfully.

The trio stretched its musical muscles during the instrumental ‘Get It’ giving Taylor a brief breather (but, surprisingly, no wardrobe change), ending with the stomping and very appropriate ‘Knock Me Out’, which was a pounding finish and killer main set-ending blow.

The one-song encore was another Troublemaker favorite and band classic, ‘Blues Hand Me Down’ that had Taylor twirling like a top to start the song and the band unrelenting in contagious rhythm, ending the song acapella as the foursome smartly marched directly to the merch booth for a crowd ready to meet and congratulate them on a breathtaking set.

Still (for some reason) one of rock’s best kept secrets, any chance to see Vintage Trouble live (especially in a small and intimate club) is well worth the opportunity, and you may have just discovered your new favorite band in the process.

Ever since we saw Vintage Trouble at the Nether Bar in Minneapolis in Mar 2013, we knew the band was special: “Beginning with the One/Two punch of 'Hard Times (They are Coming)' and 'Blues Hand Me Down', the crowd was immediately in a frenzy; asked all evening to call-and-respond, clap along, move front to back, and generally become a part of the show.”

Even when he was on stage he was insane. He would crawl behind the drum set and then jump over the whole kit... drummer and all. It was impossible to take your eyes off of Bradley because you wanted to know what he was going to do next.”

Imagine a road…

…a road that runs like the river, that is hopeful, both soulful and serene, and with boys in the street –
That was the vibe of the evening as retro-soul rockers Vintage Trouble and opener singer-songwriter Greg Holden hit town, to play at Mill City Nights in Minneapolis.

Holden got things going with a heartfelt acoustic set, culled mostly from his major label debut, Chase the Sun (Warner Bros Records).  The Scotsman has lived in New York since 2009, finding his greatest success to date with not one of his own singles, but as the co-writer of American Idol winner Phillip Phillips’ huge hit, ‘Home’.

Holden’s own songs are worth paying attention to as well though- from his hopeful storytelling on ‘The American Dream’, getting everyone to sing the chorus of ‘Give It Away’, to the song he “wrote for some friends of mine”, current single ‘Boys in the Street’, which was a full circle moment as Holden revealed the first public performance of the song was in this same venue, on his last time through.

His own version of hit ‘Home’ was more revelatory, and a “song about dying”, ‘The Next Life’ showed a graphic urgency with opening lyrics “My blood runs warm / Deep in my chest / My heart has a hole in it / Where the bullet came to rest”.

Vintage Trouble: Ty Taylor

After a break, lights went down and a taped announcement intro-ing “the new protocol of Soul” to Big Mama Thornton’s ‘Hound Dog’ shrilled over the speakers as the four nattily-dressed members of Vintage Trouble took to the stage, customarily wishing each other a good show and shaking hands with one another, before completely cutting loose.   The band has been used to playing stadiums of late, previously opening for The Who and currently for AC/DC, working in smaller headlining dates, in-between.

Vintage Trouble: Nalle Colt

The band is out in support of their third studio album, 1 Hopeful Road, their first for Blue Note Records and the dichotomy of playing a stadium one night and small club the next, must be at least a little discombobulating.   The four-piece (Ty Taylor – lead vocals; Nalle Colt – guitars; Rick Barrio Dill – bass ; Richard Danielson – drums, percussion) went  “zero to fifty” immediately, with opening song, ‘High Times’, a stomping, high-energy number.

Singer Taylor name-checked the city several times, as he stalked both sides of the stage, laid down singing from the stage ledge, and constantly craned his body into the crowd.  Tempo slid a bit for the swaying ‘Doin’ What You’re Doin’, a new song filled with positivity that echoes the ’70’s socially-aware period of a Bill Withers or Marvin Gaye.

The band even dug deep to give the crowd a live rendition of ‘Get It’, a bonus track from the new album that is only available on the Japanese release.  Just over halfway into the 70 min set was the perennial highlight, an extended version of the blues slapping, ‘Run Like the River’, which had Taylor doing exactly that, first running throughout the crowd on the floor high-fiving everyone, then making his way upstairs to the balcony to sing the remaining verses from there.

A breakneck ‘Shine Your Light’ ended the main set at just past the fifty minute mark, causing the audience to clap and cheer for more.  The reflective mid-tempo’d ‘Soul Serenity’ began the encore, Tyler emoting into his old-school mic, as Colt strummed pensively.

The band ended with the first song most knew from, the first song on their 2011 debut The Bomb Shelter Sessions, ‘Blues Hand Me Down’ that had Taylor scream in his best James Brown, spinning in place as his corded microphone whipped around him like an electric lasso.

And after a seemingly too-short seventy minutes from the headliner, the show was done and both acts went back on the road, sowing their songs of soul, self, and salvation, in another town down the line.

Troublemakers and Boys in the Street: Vintage Trouble w/Greg Holden on tour.

One of the most exciting live bands of recent note, Los Angeles’ Vintage Trouble hits the road again, this time in promotion of their latest, 1 Hopeful Road (Blue Note Records).  The band has barely been in existence for five years, yet struts with a swagger like bands that have been around for decades.

Having just finished stints playing huge venues with the likes of The Who, Paloma Faith, and AC/DC, the band scales back to smaller venues for its own headlining tour but count on singer Ty Taylor to scale the speakers, possibly crowd surf, and otherwise be a part of the crowd.

After leaving the legendary punk band The Sex Pistols, singer Johnny Rotten (real name: John Lydon) decided to form Public Image Ltd., often abbreviated to PiL, with former Clash member Keith Levene and school friend Jah Wobble (of Jah Wobble's Invaders Of The Heart, who had a great hit with Sinead O'Connor with "Visions of You" in 1992).

Anyway, I'm happy to report that PiL is back with a new album What The World Needs Now…, and the preceding single "Double Trouble" is just brilliant.

There will also be a world tour, in support of the new album... and joining Lydon will be former The Damned guitarist Lu Edmonds, bassist Scott Firth, and The Pop Group's drummer Bruce Smith.

Let's hope for a US tour after their European dates (listed below).

London band Pink Film (singer Ziyad Al-Samman, bassist Frank Styles, guitarist Laurence Hammerton and drummer Danny Brooks) will be releasing their new single "Trouble" (with b-side "Rubber") this October 2nd.

The single was recorded with sonic-sorcerer Shuta Shinoda and features an impromptu sax addition from a Parisian jazz prodigy who happened to be recording in the other studio.

The special 'Trouble' show will also be held on October 2nd at the Garage in London.

There’s no denying their music’s description—

Self-described as “live-wired, straight-shootin’, dirty-mouth'd, pelvis-pushing juke music” and “the new protocol of soul”, Los Angeles quartet Vintage Trouble more than lived up to that moniker, closing this leg of their Swinghouse Sessions Tour, with a raucous 100 min. night of revelry at the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis.

Following up 2010’s self-released The Bomb Shelter Sessions, the band went the acoustic route with the new five song The Swing House Acoustic Sessions EP to show a different side of their music, and booked an accompanying tour, with the Minneapolis date added somewhat late to the itinerary.

Ty Taylor

One of James Brown’s many nicknames was “Mr. Dynamite” and that torch may have been ably passed to VT lead singer Ty Taylor, who mimics many of the Godfather’s signature moves, but adds his own take, and is the mesmerizing center of the band.

Nalle Colt

Guitarist Nalle Colt, drummer Richard Danielson, and bassist Rick Barrio Dill fill out their more than professional lineup, who dresses impeccably, shakes each other’s hands before each performance, bows as a group, and remembers the showmanship level of classic rock and R&B bands of old; traits that are now unfortunately an exception, rather than the rule.

Energy level started high with opening songs ‘High Times’ and a very extended ‘Total Strangers’ that saw Taylor twisting and turning and guitarist Colt cutting loose with blues-ridden riffs early. Taylor remembered their first time headlining in town as “that place with a ceiling so low we couldn’t jump… in some basement…” and mis-heard the venue shouted back to him as “The Never Bar”, calling the name “appropriate – never jump, never do s#!t, because you’ll knock yourself out”, referring to its tiny size.

‘Lo and Behold’, from the new acoustic EP, was instead done electrically, with influence and a guitar intro by Colt, done with a pronounced Spanish flavor. For ‘Run Like the River’ and its chorus of “Run baby run”; Taylor did just that, sprinting from the stage into both sides of the crowd, high-fiving fans, then to the balcony level itself where he finished the song hanging over the edge.

Mid-set, chairs were set up at the front of the stage for a four-song acoustic performance, beginning with the touching, ‘Not All Right With Me’. The socially conscious and soulful ‘Another Man’s Words’ and yet-to-be-released ’24-7-365 Satisfaction Man’ rounded out this short, stripped down portion of the show.

Energy immediately pushed back up to fifth gear with initial single, ‘Blues Hand Me Down’ and a party-starting ‘Strike Your Light’ which found Taylor returning to the middle of the crowd, getting everyone lower with the beat, only to stand and jump up, on cue.

Their set ended with the slower ‘Run Outta You’, with the sole encore being their more-than-risqué update of the sound of Wilson Pickett’s ‘Land of 1000 Dances’, the not-so-subtly titled ‘Pelvis Pusher’.

As the song wound down and crowd continued to clap along, the band took their leave of the stage one-by-one, heading directly for the merch booth to meet every one of the fans present; another sign of consummate band professionalism.

If Vintage Trouble is indeed the “new protocol of soul”, the future is in very good hands.

Although the show is at the Cedar Cultural Center, it's actually a First Avenue show. The last time Of Montreal played in Minneapolis, it was also at the Cedar last year, which Jamie described as, "a wildly inventive show" with balloons, "topless gremlins", and a horse-like contraption.

Of Montreal will be touring in support of their forthcoming album Aureate Gloom, which doesn't have a release date, at this time.

Opening up the show will be Pillar Point, who is out on their first US tour this fall. Pillar Point (Scott Reitherman) will be likely playing tracks from his self-titled debut album.

It's always good to see that Tennis will be back in Minneapolis on October 7th, celebrating their new album Ritual In Repeat (which came out September 9th on Communion Records). The husband/wife duo (Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley) is fresh off their sold-out North American tour with Haim.

Opening for Tennis will be Pure Bathing Culture. You may recall that Jessie caught the Portland-based band in Los Angeles earlier this year and reported, "Sarah Versprille’s souring, angelic vocals and Daniel Hindman’s incandescent guitar solos, this powerfully divine foursome sets the tone for a truly ethereal concert experience. I’m not sure how she does it, but Sarah makes a mullet look completely modern AND rad."

Kiss / Def Leppard / The Dead Daisies

“You wanted the best, you got the best!”, so is the classic stage intro for Kiss, who come to town alongside fellow hard rock legends, Def Leppard.  At least two of the best anyway, as Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons lead the now-Rock Hall inducted band in what will no doubt be a highly pyrotechnic and entertaining show.

Though Def Leppard’s  guitarist Vivian Campbell continues to bravely battle Hodgkin's lymphoma, he refuses to let it sideline him and expect him and the band to play all the 80s/90s classics during their hour+ set.

Down Under-formed band The Dead Daisies begins the evening, featuring ex-INXS singer Jon Stevens and an A-list of supporting players.

Best of all, KISS and Def Leppard jointly are supporting members of the armed services by partnering with numerous military organizations for the tour.

Time to “reach for the Sun”!

Dallas-based choral symphonic rock band The Polyphonic Spree is back on the road for their Psychphonic Tour in support of last year’s Yes, It's True and just-released  remix album Psychphonic (Kirtland Records). Expect a gang of robed singers to crowd the small Cedar Cultural Center stage and an unavoidable feeling of glee to fill the audience.

The oddly named Catbath opens, composed of former members of Nightosaur, Hot Rash, and Skipper, as well as a current member of MiddlePicker—what’s that mean?—arrive early to find out.

Strand of Oaks can attest to the healing power of music.

The project is essentially singer-songwriter Tim Showalter who plays somewhat dark folk rock and was sidelined last Christmas as Showalter and his wife were involved in an icy car accident with two semis that left him concussed with all broken ribs on his right side.  The resulting HEAL (Dead Oceans Records) is a revelatory insight into Showalter’s near-death trauma.

Southern pre-country blues folk singer Christopher Denny to open the show.

When I saw that Kingmaker were playing at the Garage in Burnsville, Minnesota, I was really excited. After all, we haven't heard much from this British band since the 90s (they broke up in 1995 but reformed in 2010). But alas, this Kingmaker band is a hardcore band from Chicago.

With the recent Sleeper at Studio B at the Skyway Theatre because fans of Louise Wener may be disappointed to find out that, this Sleeper is actually a Minneapolis DJ.

I suppose there's only so many names to go around, but still...

Anyway, Kingmaker are touring with Seeker, a metal band from Dallas, and Widow, a metal band from Houston.

How much would you pay to see Portugal. The Man, Grouplove, The Mowgli's, and Vintage Trouble together on one bill? How about FREE, courtesy of Chipotle. This is an unbelievable deal! If you've never seen these bands, get there early for a good spot. Bring fold-able chairs or blankets. Let's hope it doesn't rain.

Although this will be Minneapolis' first Cultivate Festival, the festival started in 2011 in Chicago. 2014 is the first time the Denver-based burrito chain is expanding to Minneapolis.

Spokesman Chris Arnold said festivals in other cities have drawn between 25,000 and 40,000 people... but based on seeing the turnout for the Internet Cat Video at Walker Art Center last night, I would think higher!

         A cold and rainy night outside was in stark contrast to the hot and crowded basement bar of Mill City Nights, where LA-based buzz band Vintage Trouble and openers Leogun, each shook the rafters inside the sold-out tiny club.

         Leogun, a UK power rock/blues three piece got the night started with a literal bang, plowing through seven songs in just over 30 minutes. The band name apparently refers to a half-man/half-lion beast and guitarist/vocalist Tommy Smith and bassist Matt Johnson certainly looked the part; shoulder-length curly hair flailing with each chord struck while drummer Mike Lloyd kept time in back. Clearly influenced by the past but with a sound their own, the band has appeal to fans of Humble Pie, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Led Zeppelin, Queens of the Stone Age and anything in-between.

         After a short break, the four well-dressed members of Vintage Trouble maneuvered through the crowd (as it's too small at The Nether for any off-stage Green Room), entering to Big Mama Thornton's version of 'Hound Dog', then blazing through an often incendiary set that was just short of two hours. While the band's sound is anchored in old soul/rock (think Redding, Pickett, Ike Turner, Hendrix), it plays with an updated grit to to form an audio amalgam that is both retro and modern.

         Beginning with the One/Two punch of 'Hard Times (They are Coming)' and 'Blues Hand Me Down', the crowd was immediately in a frenzy; asked all evening to call-and-respond, clap along, move front to back, and generally become a part of the show.

         Vocalist/frontman Ty Taylor has come a long way from his Rockstar:INXS days, morphing into a mesmerizing and charismatic showman that spins, juts, and shakes in a way that would make James Brown proud. Drummer Richard Danielson and bassist Rick Barrio Dill more than ably held down the bottom end, while band 'secret weapon', guitarist Nalle Colt (looking like a dapper Viggo Mortenson) impressed with roaring riffs and stretched out solos.

         As much as the songs detonate on 'The Bomb Shelter Sessions" LP, live and in concert is truly the way to experience this band, who clearly encourages and feeds off the hot-house/hootenanny feel of a small, packed room. The downside of their buzz is that they likely won't play this small a room in town again anytime soon, but do remain more than worthy of seeing live, no matter how large or small the venue.
