Young and only in her early twenties, Nigerian-American Uwade (Akhere) is just getting started but had a lot to say during her half-hour opening set. Before playing a note, she politely introduced herself, alluded to her musical beginnings, and mentioned how nice it was to be in Kansas City for the first time, before beginning with a song inspired by her late father, “The Man Who Sees Tomorrow”.
Her music is delicate and gentle like a summer morning rain, yet can be subtly impactful even though she’s only released a handful of singles, including her most recent, last November’s “Do You See the Light Around Me?” The new “The Water You Will Drink” is expected on an upcoming EP and she was joined for her final two yet-to-be-released songs, by the rhythm section of Fleet Foxes- Christian Wargo and Morgan Henderson.

For Seattle indie-folk band Fleet Foxes being on this current extended tour in support of their latest and 2022 Grammy-nominated album, Shore (released Sept 2020 on the Anti- label), it’s been like a fine wine- aging beautifully with a greater essence with the songs evolving comfortably into the band’s song canon, comprised of now almost two decades. Singer-songwriter Robin Pecknold described the previous leg’s shows as “by far the best of our career” and honing their craft further in front of live audiences again, continues to pay the band artistic dividends.
Their headlining set, clocking in just shy of two hours, did not disappoint the fans that had been waiting all through the pandemic years, to see their favorite band live again. Before the first note had even been played, Pecknold gushed with honest gratitude to be playing live again, and for the fans’ continued loyalty.
2008’s “Sun Giant” began things, earmarked by Pecknold’s voice that echoes like he’s singing in an ancient church (whether he truly is or not) and the band’s trademark harmonies, the likes of which, most of us haven’t heard since the heyday of 60’s folk and that of The Byrds, Simon and Garfunkel, and CSNY.
Uwade wasn’t absent from the stage long, joining the band on the newest record’s “Wading in Waist‐High Water” punctuated by a duo horn section comprised of half of the NY quartet, The Westerlies. The stage set-up was relatively simple- the band playing in front of a video backdrop that mostly showed moving geometric shapes in primary colors and nature scenes to compliment the songs, and a row of three vertical fabric panels to their right and left, framing the band with bars of soft solid colors.
The universal theme of trust issues inspired Shore’s “Can I Believe You?”, the first song Pecknold wrote for that latest record and one that shimmers musically while he lyrically admits with any inaction, that “nothing will change, staying under my weather all day”.
2017’s “Third of May / Ōdaigahara” soared like a musical falcon to the rafters, lifted by the work of the song’s inspiration, guitarist Skyler Skjelset and was elevated further by the Westerlies horns. The band primarily let their music and harmonies do the talking, usually moving into the next song after a heartfelt thank you.
They would even work in “Phoenix”, a 2021 collaborative song done with Big Red Machine (a folk collective of sorts, helmed by Justin [Bon Iver] Vernon and Aaron [The National] Dessner) and acclaimed singer-songwriter Anais Mitchell, and Pecknold would stand alone on stage, for his acoustic version of the traditional song “Silver Dagger”, made famous by Joan Baez’ 1960’s version.
The themes of nature would pervade the end of the main set, with the band reaching back to 2008 for ‘Blue Ridge Mountains” and ending with 2011’s “Grown Ocean”, a rolling mid-tempo number that found the patient but hopeful Pecknold singing, “All my life, I will wait to attain it” and the band’s heaven-sent harmonies would send them off stage, following loud applause.
The encore would consist of not four (as indicated on the setlist) but five songs (the additional “Tiger Mountain Peasant Song” added because Pecknold just felt like it). Starting gently with Pecknold solo and acoustic, the band re-joined (again accompanied by Uwade) with the latest record’s “For a Week or Two” and “Going-to-the-Sun Road”, two songs she didn’t help sing on the album, but still managed to add an additional vocal nuance to each on. The evening would finish with the title track from their 2011 second album, “Helplessness Blues.”
For an album described by its primary maker as a “celebration of life in the face of death” Fleet Foxes’ latest album Shore could have been dour, downbeat, and dismal, especially being released during the uncertain times of the pandemic, but the joyous noise and unmistakable harmonies that emanate from the songs, are an ideal soundtrack to newer times, and hearing those songs live, is not to be missed.
