I came home ranting and raving to my roommate about the recent HardDrive Live Tour at Mill City Nights, and I couldn't stop talking about Wilson. That's when she said, "Yeah, we saw them last August with He Is Legend." Unfortunately, I may or may not have been slightly inebriated (okay, I was wasted) and do not remember seeing them. What a shame because they were great last night.
Being the sole opening band on a tour with two well-known headliners has to be rough. It didn't seem to faze the guys in Wilson. They got up on stage right at 7:30 and commanded the crowd from the first note.
Their sound is unique but not weird. It's rock and metal but not just loud noise. It's party music! It makes you want to dance. During the last song, the singer left the stage and came back with a giant marching bass drum on. He was banging the hell out of that thing and it put a smile on my face. It was simple, dumb, but you know what? I'll remember that and I will be going to see them again next time they come to town just because I will remember that moment.
Looking back, it made sense that they played with He Is Legend last time I saw them. They have the same kind of style and sound. It made no sense that they were on the show last night. They were too good and sounded nothing like the headliners.
Tremonti was up right after Wilson. Tremonti is fronted by Mark Tremonti who was the guitarist for Creed and then Alter Bridge. Tremonti's sound is a bit different than those two bands. It's more speed metal but I think that's more because of Garrett Whitlock's drumming. He was a monster behind that kit last night. You couldn't keep your eyes off of him. Up until the last song, the crowd seemed to be more interested in singing along than moshing. On the last song, Tremonti asked the crowd to start a circle pit and that's exactly what they did. Tremonti's hour and twenty minute set was full of radio rock anthems and short lived but talented guitar solos.
After an annoyingly long wait, it was finally time for Trivium. Apparently there was a meet and greet between Trivium and Tremonti which caused a fifty five minute gap in the music. Needless to say, the crowd seemed frustrated, but there was no mass exodus. The crowd waited, somewhat patiently, for Trivium to come up.
The stage was set up complete with giant skulls with horns and light up eyes on either side of the stage. The crowd was instantly excited the moment the musicians stepped foot on the stage. Trivium is a heavy rock band from Florida that popped up on the scene back in the early 2000's and has yet to slow down. They have already released six studio albums and nineteen singles. They played for well over an hour and played a little bit of everything including many selections off of their upcoming album. Their latest album Silence in the Snow is to come out October, 2nd of this year, via Roadrunner Records.
The band's energy never faltered and neither did the energy of the crowd. It seemed that everyone went home happy after getting their face rocked off by these extremely popular metal groups.
