Los Angeles-based dream pop/shoegaze band Winter, they are touring in support of their debut LP earlier this year on Lolipop Records, with all-new single on Burger Records.
…
San Francisco’s Tanukichan (Hannah van Loon) just headlined the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis on Wednesday night. She’s touring in support of her sophomore album GIZMO (Company Records).
Opening the show was Winter (Samira Winter), playing some tracks from her latest album What Kind of Blue Are You? (Bar/None Records).
There was a row of Winter fans in the middle of the dance floor, often screaming “I love you!”. Winter would acknowledge them, saying this was the “best crowd ever” and that she sometime needed words of encouragement.
They must have had sound problems, because for the first song, Winter’s mic was really undermixed and you could barely hear her vocals. It got better by the time “Lose You” was played.
With better vocals, I can hear the last three songs, “Mr. on-my-Mind”, “Good”, and “Kind of Blue”, the title track to her new album.
Tanukichan came on stage shortly after and played selections from her two albums, Sundays and GIZMO. She seems to favor the new songs, possibly because she got to work with Toro Y Moi’s Chaz Bear… which is very ethereal, noisy, and shoegazing. This is so weird, considering that Van Loon started as a fiddle player in a bluegrass band, before joining pop band Trails and Ways.
Trails and Ways (24 Jun 2015)
Speaking of which, yes, of course, we’ve seen Trails and Ways before, in Jun 2015, writing: “Highlight of their show for me was their song finale, "Mtn Tune", featuring a great guitar solo by Hannah Van Loon.”
Of the new songs, “Take Care” was played early in the set. The song was written when Van Loon was depressed… probably due to the COVID pandemic. She mentioned in an interview, “It was painful to feel isolated and I craved companionship or friendship even more, but I knew that someday I would come out of it, and hopefully we would be friends again.”
Despite feeling depressed, much of Gizmo’s songs are positive/happy lyrics.

Oakland's Trails and Ways is currently on tour in support of their debut full length Pathology, which saw release earlier this June 2nd via our favorite label Barsuk Records.
…
The bossa nova/indiepop band Trails and Ways made their first visit to the Twin Cities (according to rhythm guitarist/keys Keith Brown) at the Turf Club in St Paul, last night, June 24th. The four-piece band is currently on tour in support of their debut album Pathology, available now on Barsuk Records.
Waterstrider
Oakland's Waterstrider opened the evening with "Black Blood", a rather slow song, but immediately picking up the pace with when Brijean Murphy (the Congas player) joined them on stage for the second song.
The five-piece band (however, a backup singer sixth band member joined them on tour) played plenty of songs from their 2015 album Nowhere Now, including the powerful title track that closed out their 30-min set.
There are two things you need to know about Trails and Ways: (1) Everybody, including the drummer, sings, and (2) they love music and they love playing music. The Oakland band first came to our attention when they did a series of cover lover songs in 2013, particularly a Portuguese version of Frank Ocean's "Lost".
The California band is now on tour in support of their debut full length album Pathology, available on Barsuk Records.
You can tell with the movie projector showing videos and images and live music set, that the band gave careful thoughts in the show's hour long presentation. The films sometime contains scenes of rivers and trees... something that the band admitted that they really love the lush green trees of the Midwest, having just taken the long drive from Wisconsin to Minnesota.
Since we already knew the band can sing in Portuguese, it wasn't a surprise to see that they've included a couple of Spanish-language songs on their set.
Highlight of their show for me was their song finale, "Mtn Tune", featuring a great guitar solo by Hannah Van Loon.
The two-song encore started with the Miguel cover "Sure Thing", and closing with their last song off Pathology called "Vines".
Trails and Ways' Pathology is out now on Barsuk Records.

"Night and Day" was written by Cole Porter and is part of the Great American Songbook. It was written for the 1932 play Gay Divorce and was featured in the 1934 film adaptation, The Gay Divorcee. …
Nancy Sinatra will be releasing Shifting Gears this December, her first album in four years.
Sinatra is the daughter of the late Frank Sinatra, and probably is known for a few hits from her time: "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'" and "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)" (which was actually a Cher cover, but it's Sinatra version that Quentin Tarantino used in his Kill Bill movie).
Although she's known as a pop singer, the title, Shifting Gears refers to her shifting music genres with this upcoming album. According to Sinatra, "This particular collection of music contains some of the biggest charts and arrangements, as well as the most dynamic vocals, of my career. I'm thrilled to have these songs finally available to the public."
She is talking about a number of songs from her past, that she's gone back and re-recorded for the album, including Roberta Flack's "Killing Me Softly With His Song" (although according to Sinatra, she said the song was originally by Lori Lieberman - you can read the well-written and researched Sinatra blog entry) and Neil Diamond's "Holly Holy". You can check out the latter track on USAToday.com:
Side note: fans of Peter, Bjorn and John, look for your friend Peter Moren on three tracks. Ane Brun and Kathryn Williams also make lovely appearances.…
Norwegian-born pop singer-songwriter Ane Brun has released Rareties, on her label, Balloon Ranger label. This is the second collection, following Songs 2003-2013 in May, but this new compilation feature, as the title suggests, rarities and oddities.
According to Brun, "Rarities is a compilation of songs and recordings that have either not been released, or have been released on other compilations or as singles. This is a way to empty our cupboards of recordings that have been lying around, and another way to mark my ten year anniversary as an artist."

Joanna Gruesome, not to be confused with Joanna Newsom (they must really dislike her?), recently covered Galaxie 500's "Tugboat" - which is the B-Side to their Sugarcrush single, out November 18th, from Slumberland Records.
According to the press release, the band previously played the cover song at their show at CMJ's Music Marathon last month.
As for me, I've previously heard the "original" band Dean & Britta play Galaxie 500 songs at Bathysphere: A Psychonautical Voyage earlier this year, and yes, they did play "Tugboat" live. Also, a little trivia, but Britta is the singing voice of JEM (that girl band cartoon).

Trails and Ways recently covered Frank Ocean's "Lost", but as a bossa nova version... and in Portuguese.
The song is available for download at Soundcloud.
If you don't listen to pop music, Frank Ocean is a singer/rapper from New Orleans. He's probably more famous for writing some songs for Brandy, Justin Bieber and John Legend. Ocean is currently in OFWGKTA (aka Odd Future).
As for Trails and Ways, I think they are from Oakland, California (but apparently knows Portuguese). Regarding the cover, I believe it's the first in a series of cover songs. Their EP called Trilingual is out now, via Non•Market.
Just to set the record straight, The Pines, that I'm familiar with, are a UK duo, consisting of Pamela Berry (singer of Black Tambourine, as well as Glo-Worm, and others...) and Joe Brooker (from The Foxgloves).
With that said, there is another band called The Pines, from Minneapolis. They're described as "gothic indie-folk", and founded by David Huckfelt and Benson Ramsey when they met in Arizona. I believe, according the press release, for this particular Highwaymen cover song, they have two singers, Erik Koskinen and Dave Simonett (of Trampled By Turtles), for this particular song.
"Highwayman" is out now on Red House Records.
The band is currently on tour:
