Montreal’s Helena Deland stopped by the 7th Street Entry on Monday night in support of her new album Goodnight Summerland.
Austin’s Jana Horn opened the show, playing songs from her new album The Window Is the Dream. Horn just recently played in the UK with Hand Habits, including playing London’s Omeara last month… but is pretty happy to be back in the USA, supporting Helena Deland.
After singing solo on the first song, Horn is joined on stage by bassist Jade and drummer Adam.
Horn mentioned that she was in Minneapolis, one year ago, and asked if anyone was also there. “No?” after hearing silence, “That’s good, I can just repeat the same thing…”
She stopped, and added, “It was drastically different the last time.” When pressed on the matter, Horn only mentioned that she and someone close to her was “feuding.”
When we looked into it, it appeared that she was at the 7th Street in 21 May 2022, supporting Tomberlin (Sarah Beth). Was the fight between Sarah and Jana? We have so many questions.
Ultimately, she ended her set with “The Way It Was”, the last song she’s written (in Minneapolis, in a bathroom at a café). There were no instruments, just Horn’s sad and shy vocals.
Helena Deland, on the other hand, was a little more cheery. She mentioned she’s played Minneapolis many times, and every time meeting new friends, some of whom inspired her to write songs about them. She played with The Weather Station in 2022, Superorganism in 2018, and Whitney in 2017… and probably more.
Her first album Someone New (which she played the title track) was released in 2020 and was nominated for Anglophone Album of the Year and longlisted for the 2021 Polaris Music Prize.
Her new album, Goodnight Summerland, which came out in October 2023, is technically her sophomore album. The record received universally acclaimed from critics, saying the album is “intimate”, “tender”, and “poetic”.
For the most part, her live shows are quiet, only because you really need to hear Deland’s gentle vocals. I think the loudest she got was for “Pale”, which had more of a dance beat. It’s a stand out song, because it sounds so different.
