The Old Haunts - Volatile

The Old Haunts

Something new for garage punk fans.

Check out Poisonous Times, the 3rd release from The Old Haunts, the Washington state garage punk band featuring Craig Extine (vocals, guitar), Scott Seckington (bass) and Tobi Vail (drums).

A little creepy, a little cooky, perhaps altogether spooky, but this may just make you wanna get up and dance. They remind a lot of Television but they really have their own unique sound. Gritty & Grungy, and sometimes quirky, the band comes up with a wirey layered guitar sound that would make Billy Gibbons smile.

It is weird and fun for sure.

I haven't heard any of their earlier material, but I really enjoyed this record as I think a lot of garage punk fans would. My favorite track on the record is a toss-up between "Volatile" and "Outside of Divided Time". Both songs are well written, with a fun jerky rhythm to them.

The Old Haunts are keeping the torch lit on the vibe and sound coming from Pacific Northwest punk scene, adding their own personal touch to the garagey punk they so creatively and forcefully spit out.

Poisonous Times will be available next week on April 8th from Kill Rock Stars Records. Look for The Old Haunts on tour.

As I listened to Red Planet Boulevard, Lana Lane's new release, having never heard her before, it came to me plain and simple: This band has all the classic rock and roll chops with a flare for the dramatic. And I enjoyed it.

Lana Lane the vocalist, has been around awhile. Teaming with her husband/ producer/ keyboardist/ bass guitarist Erik Norlander and guitarist Peer Verschuren and Ernst Van Ee on drums, they have created a unique yet familiar classic rock sound. At times I was reminded of Heart, then I would here remnants of Deep Purple, but most of all the music reminded me of Dio. Overall though it is Lana Lane with their own classic rock sound.

I found the entire album to be good classic rock with some symphonic influences, which I found out later she has been dubbed, "The Queen of Symphonic Rock", which is right on.

My favorite track on the album is "Shine", but all the songs are good. The album seems to have started with a melodic, hard rock approach to songwriting. As I listened, I was somewhat transported back in time to the early 1970's listening to a classic rock n' roll radio station. Just feeling good and loving a simpler time of fun and carefree memories.

I really enjoyed this album and I would think anyone who enjoys the classic rock genre would take something from this band. It is classic rock done with class!

Karmacoda - Turn

Karmacoda

Illuminate is the third release from Karmacoda, the female fronted, four-piece San Francisco based band.

To me, the album is very mood oriented, putting me in certain relaxed moods as I listened. This band has had a lot of success in the past with their music on soundtracks of TV and film and I can see why, as the music on this current album could easily fit into backgrounds of what one may be watching on screen.

I prefer more up-tempo music myself, but one track on Illuminate that I really liked is "Turn". This track has a very catchy chorus and the vocals by Heather Pierce are almost soothing in a mellowed Swing Out Sister tone.

The bands' songs are truly melodic in nature with emotion that illuminates the listener to what is being felt by the band on any particular track.

Overall, it is a bit too emotional for me, but the songwriting is excellent and the sounds created by the band are hypnotic. I would Reco Mend this CD to anyone that likes to feel the emotion in the music.

Rotten Cheri, the rock trio from Brooklyn, N.Y., is continuing to grow with latest record, "02".

The band, formed in 2004, consists of Stephanie St. Hilaire on vocals, Howard Alper on drums, and guitarist Kee Chung.  They fit so well together to create a catchy rock sound that has some punk roots to it.

At times on the record, the band sounds very deep, dark and a little disturbed.  But at the same time, Stephanies' vocals are a ray of sunshine that make you want to sing along on the choruses. There are 9 tracks on the record and all of them are good.  My favorite track is "Get Out & Go Away". This is rock and roll with attitude, but also lets you know they deeply care and are serious about their music and what they are saying.

On some of the tunes they sound a bit like early No Doubt, on some others they sound a bit like Veruca Salt, and yet the vocals remind me more of Garbage.  But they have their own Rock/Pop/Punk/Alternative sound.

If you like any of these bands or are simply into punk/ska with female vocals, this album will not let you down.   The band is tight and the sky is the limit for this trio, as I am sure we will be hearing a lot from Rotten Cheri in the months and years to come.

Brownout

Brownout is an 8 piece "Latin Soul Ensemble" (a side project from the more popular Austin's Grupo Fantasma). They have a debut album called Homenaje to be released at the end of January.

It's very easy to see why Prince is into these guys. This band seems capable of blending soul, latin, and tinges of acid jazz with absolute ease. There is not a bad track on this release.

The songs are sequenced in such a masterful way. Clearly extensive time and effort was put into this. The production team of Adrian Quesada, Beto Martinez and Greg Gonzalez have outdone themselves. The horn arrangements by Leo Gauna are uncanny.

I am not sure I have heard such horn arrangements since the glory days of the James Brown Band. This band clearly has its own sound, however, even when it seems to be tipping its collective hat to Tito Puente. My favorite track is “The Sexican”.

Even with its retro leanings (feels like 1972), the band is ultimately very contemporary and clean. With a little luck and proper promotion, this music could definitely could become its own phenomenon.
