The Toadies’s long-delayed 25th Anniversary of Rubberneck finally happened at First Avenue, in Minneapolis, last night, October 7th.

Not only was it the 25th Anniversary of Rubberneck, but it was also Reverend Horton Heat’s 25th Anniversary of Liquor in the Front… so the band also agreed to perform their entire album live too.

The special tour literally took two years in the making, as Toadies drummer Mark Reznicek explained, “This tour was originally slated to go out in 2020… Because of the effects of Covid, this is our third attempt at doing a tour celebrating the 25th Anniversary of Rubberneck. It’s been a long time coming, but the third time’s the charm as they say. It wasn’t ever an easy decision to postpone tours, but we felt it was the right thing to do to keep everyone (ourselves included) safe. And we’re really excited to finally be getting out there to play the album in its entirety for all our patient fans across the country.”

Rounding out the celebration was support from Atlanta’s Nashville Pussy, who kicked off the event, running at 100 miles an hour and never stopping. The cowpunk band is always fun to watch.

We last saw the band in May 2019, noting, “The band is led by husband-wife duo Blaine Cartwright and guitarist Ruyter Suys, along with new drummer Ben Thomas and bassist Bonnie Buitrago, whose hair was nearly as lion-maned as Suys. “Who wants some Pussy?” Cartwright asked after tuning up, beginning the set with 2005’s ‘Pussy Time’, in case anyone in the crowd didn’t realize what time it actually was. Suys and Buitrago were flowing masses of head banging hair and the band, realizing they were behind schedule, barely took a breath between the first several songs.”

Next up was Reverend Horton Heat (guitarist/singer Jim Heath, upright bassist Jimbo Wallace, drummer Jonathan Jeter), who played the entire Liquor in the Front album, with the exception of “The Entertainer” by Scott Joplin (this ragtime piano song would be more like an outro to play in the background when you leave the stage).

Liquor in the Front was RHH’s first album under Sub Pop (who became a superstar label when they signed Nirvanna in 1988) and RHH’s song “In Your Wildest Dreams” appeared in various TV shows at that time period. When they played this song at First Avenue, everyone in the audience screamed back “cha cha cha!” as they closed out the song.

Jim Health, smiling and clearly happy, felt they had to re-do the ending of the song, to get everyone in the audience had to chance to say “cha cha cha!” again!

Reverend Horton Heat’s set was cut a little short, because there was someone passed out in the front. The band stopped playing and asked if the person was okay. After everything was given the okay to continue, Health said that this was their last song, which was a Motörhead cover of “Ace of Spades”.

The Toadies (singer/guitarist Vaden Todd Lewis, drummer Mark Reznicek, lead guitarist Clark Vogeler, and bassist Doni Blair) closed out the night. As expected, the band played the entire Rubberneck album… but before the album, they played some classic Toadies songs… and a new song called “Closer to You”, which they are hoping they can record it for the next album.

Rubberneck was (and is) The Toadies’ most important album, originally released in 1994 on Interscope Records and earning the band RIAA gold and platinum status. Their song, “Possum Kingdom”, as well as “Away” and “Tyler”, established the band on the global stage.

Unfortunately, during the performance of “Away”, someone in the audience threw a drink and hit singer Vaden Todd Lewis. First Avenue had to find and remove that person from the venue.

If there is one Toadies show to see, this Rubberneck anniversary tour is probably the best tour to see them live. Combine that with The Reverend Horton Heat and Nashville Pussy, it’s an unbeatable tour.

The co-headlining Toadies and Reverend Horton Heat (with support from Nashville Pussy) will take place at First Avenue on October 7th. We’ve seen all these bands throughout the years, but it is really fun to see them all on one billing.

The Toadies are on their rescheduled 25th Anniversary tour for Rubberneck.

The Head And The Heart is back on tour for their latest Every Shade of Blue (Warner Records/Reprise Records).

We caught the band at Festival Palomino 2014 and wrote, “Seattle favorites, The Head and the Heart, who had maybe the biggest overall sound of the festival acts. Led by co-vocalists Josiah Johnson, Charity Rose Thielen, and Jonathan Russell, the band’s 50 min. set leaned heavily on last year’s Let’s Be Still (Sub Pop Records) and the damp crowd showed why Minneapolis is one of the band’s best markets.”

Rocktober continues! And damn the scheduling gods for packing in so many shows, especially on Saturday Oct 8!

Weather has turned and fall is clearly hear, so the best time for live music is now, before earlier sunsets and colder temps.

Here’s what’s happening in the Kansas City/Lawrence, KS metro October 3rd-9th.

(Several artists are still requiring precautions for entry, so check with the venue and/or assume vaccination proof, might still be required)

Monday Oct 3

Diana Krall, Kauffman Center. $59-$179

Diana Krall is the only jazz singer to have eight albums debut at the top of the Billboard Jazz Albums chart and she’s won two Grammy® Awards and ten Juno® Awards among many others. Latest record from Elvis Costello’s better half is 2020’s This Dream of You, which followed a duets album with Tony Bennett.

Mother Mother w Sir Sly,Transviolet, Uptown. $55-$132

BC Canadian indie rock band who released a deluxe version of latest album, Inside, this January, with seven additional songs. Live, they’ve recently been working in a cover of Radiohead’s “Creep” and ending their main set with “Hayloft” and its recent sequel, “Hayloft II”.

Opener Sir Sly is out in support of last year’s The Rise and Fall of Loverboy, and as we explained previous, is one of those “unicorn” bands we’ve been trying to see for the last decade, but has never worked out- guess what? We're out of town for this date, so will miss them again- the “curse” continues!”  We caught Transviolet live last, back in 2016.

La Dispute with Sweet Pill and Pictoria Vark, Granada. $25

Michigan post-hardcore band out supporting 2019’s Panorama full-length but has been playing their 2011 album, Wildlife, in its entirety along with a multi-song encore of more recent songs.

Philly emo-core rockers Sweet Pill have new single out, “High Hopes” from their Where the Heart Is, and Pictoria Vark is a NJ bassist living near Iowa City with project The Parts I Dread.

Tuesday Oct 4

Toadies with Reverend Horton Heat and Frankie and The Witch Fingers, Knuckleheads. $25-$30

If it’s called the Rubberneck Tour, it’s a dead giveaway that the Texas band will be playing their 1994 album in its entirety. Look for members of ‘The Heat to maybe join on one song, as well as a classic Screamin’ Jay Hawkins cover.

Speaking of Reverend Horton Heat, they've been playing their own classic album, Liquor in the Front, as well as Sub Pop Songs, which include a legendary Motorhead cover.

Frankie and the Witch Fingers hits Desert Daze this weekend in California then joins up for this tour, with Nashville Pussy on later dates (including Minneapolis).

Pusha T, The Truman, $36.50-$74.50

On his It’s Almost Dry Tour, from the new album of the same name, the former rapper from The Clipse is one of the most recognizable in hip-hop (and actually had a direct hand in McDonald’s “I’m Lovin’ It’ catchphrase!). The album, hot topped the Billboard 100, includes “Rock N Roll” a collab with Kanye West, before they notably parted ways and expect that one and some previous ‘Ye collabs live.

Restraining Order, Prince Daddy and The Hyena, The Rino, $22

New England hardcore punk band out supporting The World is Too Much (on Triple B Records) and new single “Fight Back”, the band is fairly new, so catch them while you can.

Opening indie/emo rockers Prince Daddy And The Hyena have been around a bit longer, since 2014 with three full lengths and four EPs to their credit, the latest being a concept piece.

Wednesday Oct 5

Big Wild, The Midland. $25

aka Jackson Stell, the electronic/dance vocalist/multi-instrumentalist/producer just released sophomore full-length, The Efferusphere and plays numerous instruments for his live shows.

Thursday Oct 6

Marty Stuart and his Fabulous Superlatives, Kauffman Center. $39-$59

We love Marty Stuart – we’ve caught him live a few times recently (his 2017 Fine Line show was amazing), his variety show repeats on RFD channel are a guilty pleasure, and in addition to being a legend himself, respects the legacy of Country Music and vows to uphold it.

New album Songs I Sing in the Dark has been ready a while and is just awaiting release and longtime band The Fabulous Superlatives (guitarist Kenny Vaughan, drummer Harry Stinson, bassist Chris Scruggs) is about as good as they come.

Jukebox the Ghost, Bottleneck-Lawrence, $22

On the Cheers! Tour, the Wash DC power pop trio sounds very celebratory supporting their new album of the same name. Seems like we’ve never seen them live, which is odd, but will hope to catch them soon.

Jon Wolfe, Granada- Lawrence, $15/$18

Texas country singer-songwriter released seventh studio album, Doz Corazonas just over a year ago, so has a deep catalog to draw from for his live shows.

Muna, The Truman. $35-$60

Call us fans of this LA indie-pop trio, who released their third but self-titled album back in June, and who we last caught opening for Kacey Musgraves at the beginning of the year. The band has great energy live and has even been working in a cover of The Killers’ “Mr. Brightside” which is a natural sing-along song, and last year’s “Silk Chiffon” was on numerous Best-Of year-ending lists.

Tour is mostly sold out (as you can see) so catch them while you can!

Tanya Tucker, Prairie Band Casino-Mayetta, SOLD OUT

The country queen known best for classic song “Delta Dawn” is still going strong in her mid-60’s and is enjoying a big renaissance and career boost, helped by Brandi Carlile and Shooter Jennings. Their collab, 2020’s While I’m Livin’ won two GRAMMYS and the follow up is due soon.

Friday Oct 7

black midi, Granada. $25

There’s still plenty of buzz for this UK experimental/art band and their full-length Cavalcade, as evidenced when we saw them last October in Minneapolis. They were 2019 Mercury Prize nominees, are purposely a bit of an enigma, originated in London’s BRIT School of Music, and are on their Back in Black Tour.

Karol G w Agudelo888, T-Mobile Center, $35.50-$175.50

The $trip Love Tour hits KC’s arena for a big show with new album expected soon. The urbano/reggaeton artist in August released "Gatúbela" (alongside Maldy from Plan B). The song, title means "Catwoman” and video features her new red hairstyle. Opener is a well-known urbano DJ.

Danger Bob with Cher UK and The Bubble Boys, Liberty Hall. $20

Two longtime area bands headline this throwback show to the indie-rock ‘90s (note that vaxx proof is required)

Glaive with Aldn, The Truman. $25

aka Ash Guiterrez has been an online hyperpop sensation, and the 17-year-old’s recent single is "Minnesota Is a Place That Exists" that kind of places our home state as part of an alibi story, so we’re not sure what to think. The lower-case loving artist is out on his america is a place that exists Tour and is recommended for any Kid Laroi fans, who he’s previously opened for.

Riff Generation, Medallion Theater, $25

October installment featuring a new jazz ensemble that cultivates new music alongside Kansas City’s fabled heritage of the genre. Part of a stand-alone performance series of new, highly collaborative compositions in a modern examination of the Kansas City “riff style.” Musicians audition for a one-year residency and perform these works in a variety of settings.

Saturday Oct 8

Wolf Alice, The Truman. $30-$50

This London alt rock band remains one of our favorites, releasing Blue Weekend last June and proceeding to win the Brit Award for Best British Group, earlier this year. We’ve been writing about them since early 2013 and saw them last twice in 2018, so are overdue. It will be anything but a blue weekend catching them live, as it’s their biggest US tour to date, meaning their secret is finally getting out in the States.

Ani DiFranco, Liberty Hall- Lawrence, $30-$189

The groundbreaking leader of Righteous Babe Records returns to the road, in support of last year’s Revolutionary Love. She’s always been prolific, releasing some twenty+ albums and a 2019 memoir so has plenty to draw from, and is supporting Run for Something on this tour, to inspire young progressive leaders to run for local offices.

William Basinski, Bottleneck. $25

LA avant-garde composer bringing his soundscapes to this small college club in support of new album, ". . . on reflection ", this ambient, experimental show could prove to be very mesmerizing.

Post Modern Jukebox, Uptown, $35-$75

A rescheduled show – Scott Bradlee's Postmodern Jukebox is a musical troupe known for covering modern pop hits and transforming them into jazz, swing, and doo-wop songs.

Sueco, recordBar, $20

LA pop-punk young rapper whose song “Paralyzed” blew up on TikTok and Spotify, brings a high energy show to a relatively small room.

Max and Iggor Cavalera, Granada- Lawrence, $25/$28

Sepultura fans, rise! Expect songs from Beneath the Remains and Arise, as well as maybe a Motorhead cover on this tour that looks back fondly on the brother’s beginnings.

Slaughter and Riley’s LA Guns, Ameristar, $32-145

A throwback to the hair days with both bands having several chart hits, and though there are two confusing versions of L.A. Guns, we want to say this one featuring original vocalist Phil Lewis and drummer Steve Riley (no Tracii though). Most of Slaughter usually backs up Vince Neil on his solo dates.

Kelsea Ballerini, The Midland. $39.50-$69.50

Despite her recent divorce announcement, there’s a lot of joy to be found on new album Subject to Change, and on her Heartfirst Tour, expect a healthy chunk of songs from that, a Cowboy-themed section, and a Spacey one, as well as other radio hits. A good opportunity to see a rising country-pop artist in a relatively small theater.

Zach Williams, Uptown, $24.25-$225

Southern Christian rock artist has new single, “Heart of God” out and new album A Hundred Highways.

The co-headlining Toadies and Reverend Horton Heat (with support from Nashville Pussy) will take place at First Avenue on October 7th. We’ve seen all these bands throughout the years, but it is really fun to see them all on one billing.

The Toadies are on their rescheduled 25th Anniversary tour for Rubberneck.

Toadies drummer Mark Reznicek explained the long delay, “This tour was originally slated to go out in 2020… Because of the effects of Covid, this is our third attempt at doing a tour celebrating the 25th Anniversary of Rubberneck. It’s been a long time coming, but the third time’s the charm as they say. It wasn’t ever an easy decision to postpone tours, but we felt it was the right thing to do to keep everyone (ourselves included) safe. And we’re really excited to finally be getting out there to play the album in its entirety for all our patient fans across the country.”

Over two years in the making, this is going to be an awesome show, celebrating Rubberneck.

The Head And The Heart is back on tour for their latest Every Shade of Blue (Warner Records/Reprise Records).

We caught the band at Festival Palomino 2014 and wrote, “Seattle favorites, The Head and the Heart, who had maybe the biggest overall sound of the festival acts. Led by co-vocalists Josiah Johnson, Charity Rose Thielen, and Jonathan Russell, the band’s 50 min. set leaned heavily on last year’s Let’s Be Still (Sub Pop Records) and the damp crowd showed why Minneapolis is one of the band’s best markets.”

Roots-Americana singer/songwriter William Clark Green will stop by the Amsterdam Bar & Hall in St Paul, in support of his sixth album Baker Hotel (Bill Grease Records).

“What this record means to me is self-reflection, realizing that I just turned 35 and it’s like, ‘Where am I at in life? Where do I want to be? Where did I think I would be?’ Not being able to work [during the lockdown], I had a lot of time to sit and think about myself, and what’s really locking me down, and that’s what I think this record is about,” Green says.

What is usually the busiest time of the year for live shows, still is so, despite the continuing health restrictions and general lack of foreign acts coming over. 

It actually started getting busy in early September as more things open, and expect a wealth of choices through mid-November. 

Please continue to check venue sites and socials for their latest, as a few shows have canceled and many have moved locations– St. Vincent preferred an outdoor show, and the Granada Theater in Lawrence has had continuing maintenance and supply delays.

We probably first saw aka Annie Clark when she was a member of Polyphonic Spree but things have dramatically evolved in the years since as she has skirted the art-pop fringe, and constantly re-invented herself in Bowie-like fashion.  The latest release is Daddy’s Home (on Loma Vista) which has a 70’s NYC vibe and was co-produced by Bleachers’ Jack Antonoff. 

Clark’s latest band includes the likes of Jason (Jellyfish, Beck, etc) Falkner so the music is in very good hands (note the venue change).

Buddy Guy, Knuckleheads, $62.50

The 85-year young guitar legend.  Nothing else can be said, and despite the hefty door charge, is always worth seeing play his trademark polka-dot guitar and you’re damn right he’s still got the blues.

We remain longtime fans of aka Michelle Zauner, having previously seen her open for : Mitski at 7th Street in July 2016, Porches at 7th Street in Sep 2016, Slowdive at Palace Theatre in May 2017 and then finally headlining at Triple Rock in Oct 2017.  Vu just caught the band in Minneapolis here and the tour continues in support of the aptly-named new album, Jubilee (on Dead Oceans). Despite the pandemic, Zauner is probably having the most successful year to date with a best-selling book out as well. (Note the venue change)

Alice Cooper w Ace Frehley, Stormont-Vail Event Center- Topeka, $25-90.

The legendary master of shock rock returns, along with the guitarist known for “Shock Me”.  Alice Cooper released Detroit Stories (on earMusic) earlier this year, named for the city that launched his band’s initial success and was recorded with Motor City musicians to bring a new freshness to a classic sound. We were lucky to see opener Ace Frehley when he played with Gene Simmons for the first time in sixteen years and expect a healthy number of Kiss songs as well as solo favorites. 

Andrea Bocelli, T-Mobile Center. $80-$1,500

One of the musical highlights of the pandemic was the Italian tenor performing on Easter Sunday, in an empty Milan cathedral. His latest album is last year’s Believe (on Sugar Music/Decca) which includes his version of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” but hearing his angelic voice live won’t come cheap, with tickets topping in four-figures.

As you know I used to collect a lot of comic books, particularly DC Comics and Vertigo Comics (an imprint of DC). So I’m glad to see that Vertigo Comics-based shows are on the rise.

We’ve already got Constantine (based on Alan Moore’s Hellblazer), Swamp Thing (mostly based on Alan Moore’s reinvention of the character), V For Vendetta (based on the comic that started in the UK, but finished under the Vertigo banner), iZombie (based on the comic by Chris Roberson), Lucifer (based on Neil Gaiman’s character from The Sandman), The Losers (film based on Andy Diggle’s Vertigo comic), The Kitchen (film based on Ollie Masters and Ming Doyle’s Vertigo title), Sweet Tooth (based on Jeff Lemire’s comic ), and, of course, who could forget the extremely violent and over-the-top Preacher (based on Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s work).

So why are Vertigo titles so popular ? There’s a lot of reasons, comic book properties are hot, as Hollywood are looking for the next big thing. Also, since most titles on the Vertigo line were creator-owned, it’s much easier to sign a deal with the creators and take a chance to option for their works to be adapted for the silver screen.

The next big title to be given the Netflix treatment will be Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman… it’s currently in development. Everyone is excited about the adaption, and hopefully it will bring the story to a bigger audience.

They haven’t announce a date that the show will air, but based on the “First Look” at the Sandman via YouTube … I feel that the production may be in its final stages. The video looks great, and seemed really faithful to the original comic book.

Y: THE LAST MAN

My sister collected Y: The Last Man, when it originally printed in 2002, so I read the whole series from start to finish.

The story is about a mysterious event that killed everything on earth with a Y chromosome, leaving only Yorick and his pet monkey, Ampersand, the only male survivors on the planet. I’ve always thought it would make a good television show, so I was ecstatic to find out it was adapted in 2007, with Shia LaBeouf attached. It was around this time that DC started to collect Y: The Last Man in a slightly oversized Deluxe Collection, which I bought, to support the comic creators, Brian K Vaughan and Pia Guerra.

Y: The Last Man resurfaced again 2013 with director Dan Trachtenberg attached. That went nowhere, and eventually, it was up to FX to finally make the adaption happen in 2018. The original show runners, Michael Green and Aida Mashaka Croal, both left the show due to “creative differences”.

Filming and production for FX’s Y: The Last Man was further delayed, due to the COVID-19 pandemic… so, let’s just say it’s been a rather long road to get the show to finally air.

From the five episodes I’ve seen of Y: The Last Man, I’ll have to say that it’s pretty faithful to the comic book. There are some new changes and additions (particularly with the trans men), but I feel they were necessary for the television audiences.

A lot of critics, who never read the comic book, complains that the least interesting thing is Yorick, who is not a likeable character. While they aren’t wrong, I’m glad they made Yorick, closely based on the loser in the comic book. I would probably be more upset if they changed the character in the TV show.

His sister, Hero, gets more development in the show, which I also like… however, they should stick to the comic book and make her aggressive and anti-men.

Now in its third season, Doom Patrol is now exclusively on HBO Max (after it originally debut on the failed DC Universe). The TV show, from the start, is based on Grant Morrison and Richard Case’s Doom Patrol … starting with “Crawling from the Wreckage” storyline. You have to understand that prior to #19, Doom Patrol was the standard DC Super group. When Morrison took over, he brought such an imagination and strangeness to the group that it really didn’t fit in the regular DC Universe. After a few years, the title was moved under the Vertigo Comics banner.

The third season starts off by wrapping up all that Candlestick Maker story from last season… quite quickly! In fact, it all just ended with the pilot of Season 3… which made me think that perhaps the pilot should have actually been the final episode of Season 2. When I see something like this, it just makes me think that the showrunners and creators just have no idea what they are doing.

So far, Season 3, isn’t as crazy as previous seasons. Pacing is really slow on the “vacation” episode, but it does introduce the new threat of the series: The Brotherhood of Evil.

I remember seeing Toadies’s Rubberneck in the early 90s in comic books everywhere, thanks to Interscope Records’ advertisements. Sure, I may have listened to some of their singles, just to get an idea of what they sounded. It was just a little too hard rock/punk my music taste… but at least I was aware of the band for a long time.

After touring and opening for such acts like Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bush, and White Zombie (Rob Zombie), the band called it quits in 2001 when original bassist Lisa Umbarger left the band.

When I heard that they reformed with a new album No Deliverance, I had the opportunity to see them play Station 4 in St Paul on October 21, 2008… but that meant we had to do some legwork with their opener, a Welsh band called People in Planes (previously known as Tetra Splendour and Robots in the Sky). They were signed to Wind-Up Records, who helped us get into the show and contact with singer Gareth “Gaz” Jones.

One of the opening bands, Year Long Disaster, did a great job warming up the crowd with their rock/metal music.

People in Planes came on at 9 and played a pretty good set, including mostly new songs from their latest album. They started off the show with "Last Man Standing", "Mayday (M'aidez)", "Pretty Buildings", in pretty much the order of their album.

They ended the set on a very high note with an all rock out version of "Vampires". That's actually my favorite People in Planes song, and the whole time I was hoping they would play it.

I got a chance to talk to Gaz after the show, and it seems like they are really homesick!  Only a few weeks to go on their long-running US tour currently with The Toadies. 

Check them out on if they're coming through town.  They  are heading to Nebraska right now. Their new album, Beyond The Horizon is out now on Wind-Up Records.

Australia’s The Church is back in the city. The last time we saw them at the Cedar in 2015 we noted, “The show was performed as one long set, versus the two separate sets done earlier in the tour, with the second half being more instrumentally drawn out and ethereal than the first. The steady shaking of a maraca caused Kilbey to go into the first lines of Rupert Holmes’ ‘Escape (The Piña Colada Song)’ before launching into the dreamy 'Lightning White' with extended guitar solos.”

The Helio Sequence will open. The latest news we got from this Portland duo is that they recently re-imagined a 1914 song called ‘Out Among the Sheltering Pines’, released as part of a compilation album called Transference (Marmoset Records). The album comes out December 1, 2017.

Last Thursday was a true "throwback Thursday" as the Summerland Tour came to Mill City Nights, featuring Everclear, The Toadies, Fuel, and American Hi-Fi. All the bands were personally introduced by Everclear's singer Art Alexakis. Since he curate the Summerland Tour, I felt he personally knew everyone and shared a mutual respect and genuine friendship.

American Hi-Fi

The show started with American Hi-Fi. They are one of those bands that, had this been 8-10 years ago, I would have been all over the place. I would have been jumping and screaming. Last night I just stood there. It wasn't that they weren't good, they sounded the same as they always have, it was just that I couldn't really relate to the lyrics anymore. One of my favorite songs by them, "The Art Of Losing", is about starting a riot. I used to scream to that song growing up.

They ended their set with their biggest hit, "Flavor Of The Weak", but it was not the last we saw of singer Stacy Jones - who would later double as Everclear's drummer.

Fuel

Fuel was next. Despite being called "post-grunge", the truth is the band existed well before 90s grunge. Originally known as Small the Joy, they decided to change their name to something unsearchable (Fuel) in the mid-90s.

They played it safe and ended with their biggest hit song "Hemorrhage (In My Hands)". Like Art Alexakis would later say, all the bands will play the hits - but they also writing and releasing new music. In the case of Fuel, their latest Puppet Strings came out last year, and they previewed "Soul to Preach To" for us.

Toadies

Art Alexakis had the best introduction for Toadies, they write songs about beauty, pain, rock, love, madness... it's all there in the lyrics to their songs. Like all the bands on the bill, it's just pure rock and roll, no backing tracks, no synths.

It's been a long time since the Texas band wrote new music, having toured extensively for the 20th Anniversary of Rubberneck (which we covered last year). With that said, I did get a chance to listen to their forthcoming Heretics album, set for release September 18th, 2015, via Kirtland Records. The new record is a little stripped down (yes, singer Vaden Todd Lewis did break out the acoustic guitar during their set) and included a different version of their hit song "Possum Kingdom" and a cover of Blondie's "Heart of Glass".

Although normally "Possum Kingdom" would have instantly been the highlight of the show (on account of the massive singalong), but I really love seeing the double floor toms for "I Burn".

Art Alexakis

Everclear is definitely in my top 5 favorite 90's bands. There was something about their music, lyrics and look. Art Alexakis was definitely my first man crush. He was so cute with the sleeves of tattoos and the bleach blonde hair swooping across his forehead. Nothing has changed. Over 15 years later, their music is just as good and Art is still just as adorable as the pictures from magazines of him that I had clipped and stapled to my wall (sorry about the staples dad!).

Setlist

Each song from all of the bands was an anthem from the summers back in my childhood. Every note took me back to the summers my brother, mom and I would spend at the local swimming pool called "Holiday Pool". To this day, whenever one of these songs comes on the radio, we call it a "holiday pool song". I could smell the chlorine. I could taste the fun dips and lemonade. I could feel the sun against my skin. I could feel the never fading sunburn itch on my back. I felt like I was right back at the pool.

Before I knew it, it was 11:30 and time for Everclear. Everyone in the crowd seemed to be expecting the same thing.. being able to sing along to those hit 90's songs and have a good time. That's exactly what we got... with their three biggest hits saved for last: "Father of Mine", "I Will Buy You A New Life", and "Santa Monica" (featuring members of Fuel, Toadies, and American Hi-Fi). I'm sure they didn't sound like they did in their prime. You could tell Art was having a hard time keeping up with the words but that was okay, the crowd was there to sing every word right back him. They played the hits, they played the old, they played the new, they played everything you wanted to hear.

I crossed Everclear off of my concert bucket list with a smile on my face. They were far from perfect as far as the music went, but they were everything I wanted them to be... they were perfect for a "Throwback Thursday".

It's 1990 all over again with the annual "Summerland Tour". The 90s nostalgia tour was created by singer/guitarist Art Alexakis from Everclear, which would explain why they have headlined Summerland since its inception in 2012.

Previously the tour featured Marcy Playground (yes, that "Sex and Candy" song), Gin Blossoms, Live, Filter, Soul Asylum, Spacehog, etc.

I actually thought Brooklyn's TV on the Radio broke up in 2013... but apparently the band came back with Seeds, released in late November 2014 via Harvest Records.

Their First Avenue show is sold out, so if you haven't purchased tickets, you're out of luck. Local duo Roniia (Dark Dark Dark's Nona Marie Invie and Mark McGee) will open the Minneapolis show.
