The Woman’s Club of Minneapolis is proud to present Meghan Murphy in the long-awaited Twin Cities debut of her performance of “The Big Red Show” on Thursday, June 23.

Murphy’s one-woman show, The Big Red Show, has left audiences laughing, crying, and rising to their feet at every performance. The Chicago Sun Times calls her, “A sparkling redhead with a dynamite voice.”

Opening for Meghan will be Monica West.

Portland band Eyelids is touring for their new album The Accidental Falls. The group recently added a new member, Victor Krummenacher (of Monks of Doom, Camper Van Beethoven).

Their secret origin of The Accidental Falls was when former Tim Buckley collaborator Larry Beckett first offered Chris Slusarenko and John Moen of Eyelids to write new lyrics for their next record, the band wasn’t sure how it would fit their brand of guitar-driven rock. But they trust it to work and as a result, the fourth album was created with R.E.M.’s Peter Buck, as record producer. How they got involved with R.E.M. is another story altogether… but let’s just say that the group is a big fan of R.E.M’s music, and it’s an honor for them to work with Peter Buck.

What a dream lineup! It’s Cult-favorite band Violent Femmes with The Breeders 2022 tour.

Violent Femmes’ recently celebrated the 30th Anniversary of Why Do Birds Sing? with a deluxe 2-CD reissue. The album was remastered with previous unreleased material (including alternative takes and outtakes), and a complete concert from 1991 (captured at the Boathouse in Norfolk, VA).

We last saw VF in Oct 2017 and wrote, “It basically boils down to the fact that fans probably haven’t seen VF for 16 years. That’s a long time, but, based on hearing almost every song sung back, word for word, these same fans clearly haven’t forgotten about the Violent Femmes. They saved two of their biggest singalong classics ‘Kiss Off’ and ‘Add It Up’ for the encore.”

German singer Roosevelt is headlining the Fine Line Music Café in Minneapolis on Sunday, June 26th.

Didn’t we just see Caroline Loveglow? Yes, just last month! With Hatchie in St Paul on 15 May 2022: “Opening the show was Los Angeles’ Caroline Loveglow. She normally plays a 30 min set, but unfortunately, due to starting really late from the original schedule, it would seem she cut the set short under 15 minutes. That’s just the logical conclusion, it could be that she wasn’t feeling very well. I couldn’t tell, as she hardly spoke. She made one announcement, telling us the title to her song “Happy Happy”, and that the guitarist on stage with her was called Layne, her best friend.”

There’s no need for introductions here… we like The Lemonheads. We are happy to see that singer Evan Dando is returning to Minneapolis this November 15th, with Heyrocco.

We caught The Lemonheads in May 2019 and said, “With this new 2019 tour, it’s in support of The Lemonheads’ Varshons 2, which is an all-covers album (the follow-up to the original all-cover album ten years prior called Varshons). So as expected, a bunch over cover songs were played, but oddly songs that would make sense for Minneapolis, such as The Jayhawks’ “Settled Down Like Rain” or Paul Westerberg’s “Things”, were not played.”

Last year, Tennis, had to postponed their Swimmer tour, due to the COVID pandemic. This upcoming Minneapolis show, set at the Cedar Cultural Center on November 16th, is a make-up date. It’s been long sold out.

In addition, due to popular demand, new additional dates have been added to Los Angeles and Brooklyn after the initially announced dates in both markets sold out. Support on all headline dates comes from Molly Burch. The last time we mentioned her, she was the support for Sallie Ford in April 2017.

Also, if you are a fan of Rick & Morty, you may have heard Tennis’ new single “Borrowed Time” on the closing credits on the season 5 finale.

The rescheduled co-headlining tour of Los Angeles’ Bad Religion and Chicago’s Alkaline Trio will stop by the Palace Theatre in St Paul on November 16th. War On Women to open.

Both bands seems excited about sharing the stage, with Alkaline Trio co-lead vocalist/guitarist Matt Skiba citing that, “Bad Religion was one of my first loves”, while Bad Religion co-songwriter and lead singer Greg Graffin said the Alkaline Trio is “such a great band”.

We caught Bad Religion in July 2019 and wrote, “Greg Graffin and company played all the hits, and they were really good keeping in timing with great harmony. Again, the band were really in top form. I love seeing Brian Baker, when I saw them in the 90s, he was the “newest” band member to join and he bounced all over the place in his live performance. Sure everyone in the band is a little older now, but they still pulled off some well-practiced moves!”

When we first heard of Alex G as “Sandy”, in June 2016, I thought what a generic name. He clearly didn’t want to be found on the internet. Little did I know that after nine albums (his latest House of Sugar), that Alex G is now really popular with the youths of Minnesota (particularly the Radio K crowd). This came to my attention as I attended a young person/all-ages 100 Gecs show, and the advertisement for this show popped up and the crowd went absolutely nuts, clapping and hooing.

Last of the Better Days Ahead is the new collection of songs from Minnesotan Charlie Parr. What’s important to note is that the album is being released on Smithsonian Folkways, the non-profit record label of the Smithsonian Institute.

Talking about the new album, Parr said, “Last of the Better Days Ahead is a way for me to refer to the times I’m living in. I’m getting on in years, experiencing a shift in perspective that was once described by my mom as ‘a time when we turn from gazing into the future to gazing back at the past, as if we’re adrift in the current, slowly turning around.’ Some songs came from meditations on the fact that the portion of our brain devoted to memory is also the portion responsible for imagination, and what that entails for the collected experiences that we refer to as our lives. Other songs are cultivated primarily from the imagination, but also contain memories of what may be a real landscape, or at least one inspired by vivid dreaming.”

You can hear those songs live at this upcoming show at the Palace Theatre in St Paul.

American indie pop band Smallpools is returning to the road, after having released their EP Migraine.

The last time we saw the band, in Oct 2013, we wrote, “Indie pop band, Smallpools, hasn't been around very long, forming earlier this year, but they are already making big waves. The band opened with one of their singles, Mason Jar, before going on to play other songs off their latest EP such as Not Story Time and Over and Over.”

Smallpools is bringing along Morgxn (stylized as morgxn), who will open for the band on all 2021 dates. morgxn’s new EP is called Meridian: Vol 2… set for release on November 11th.

Saint Paul’s Rivercentre rolls out the Hollywood-style red carpet this coming Sunday for one of the most anticipated events of the year, The Starkey Hearing Foundation 17^th Annual Awards Gala.

The So The World May Hear Awards Gala is one of the most acclaimed fundraising events in the country. Because of the generosity of gala sponsors and guests, Starkey Hearing Foundation is leading the world in the creation of a community-based hearing healthcare program and other global strategic hearing health initiatives.

This year’s honorees include Ben Affleck, director, actor, writer, producer, and founder of Eastern Congo Initiative; Esther Lungu, First Lady of Zambia; the Wilf Family Foundations; FedEx; and Scott Borchetta and Sandi Spika Borchetta of Big Machine Records and Music Has Value.

U.K.’s Nothing But Thieves is back in Minnesota, headlining the Fine Line Music Café last Tuesday.

The all-ages show started earlier than the usual show time, but that did not stop the fans from showing up early and on time for the first opener, The Wrecks (Nick Anderson, Aaron Kelley, Nick Schmidt, Harrison Nussbaum, and Billy Nally). The 11-month band was really pleased at the early terrific turnout. They didn’t think anyone in the audience had heard of them (although we did write about them in May 2016), and jokingly announced “Here’s 8 songs you’ve never heard of!”

Nick Anderson announced that ‘Favorite Liar’ (which closed out their 30-min set) was the first song they’ve ever written... and that they were happy to be back in Minneapolis. Apparently, their bassist, Aaron Kelley, had families in the Twin Cities.

July Talk (guitarist/singer Peter Dreimanis, singer Leah Fay, guitarist Ian Docherty, bassist Josh Warburton, and drummer Danny Miles) was up next. Based on hearing all the hardcore fans in front singing along/singing back lyrics, half the audience was there specifically for the Canadian band. We’ve seen them before and knew they had a great “beauty and the beast” sound, that rough, whiskey-induced, growly vocals of Peter, and the sugar sweet sound of Leah.

The two (Peter & Leah) was incredibly playful, almost over the top animated the way the two sang and dance. Watching them on stage was a delight, and it didn’t hurt that their songs were great! Leah would also randomly disappear during ‘Paper Girl’, and would shout “Marco”, which the audience would shout back “Polo”. Very fun.

Perhaps the reason why the band was giving us 150% was because days before the Fine Line show, their van broke down in Texas and they were forced to cancel a few shows. They were just really, really happy to be back on stage, and it really shows by the way they were just tearing it up.

As you can see from their set, they played a half from their first self-titled album and their second album Touch. They did not play my favorite song ‘Picturing Love’, but they ended their set with the equally satisfying song ‘The Garden’.

As previously mentioned, the Essex band Nothing But Thieves (singer Conor Mason, guitarist Joe Langridge-Brown, guitarist/keys Dominic Craik, drummer James Price, and bassist Philip Blake) is white-hot, after signing to RCA Records and appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and Conan and hit#1 on the Alternative Radio. Their new single ‘Wake Up Call’ was #1 Most Added at Alternative Radio.

Of course, they saved their best-known song (‘Wake Up Call’) as the set closer, ending on a very high note... with fans demanding more and more.

Of course, they came back with a three-song encore, including fan-favorites ‘Ban All Music’ (which was the name of their popular single of their sold-out UK tour in 2015).

Critically acclaimed U.K. based band, Nothing But Thieves will be back in Minnesota next Tuesday, October 11th, in support of their self-titled album, out now on RCA Records/Sony Music UK.

The band is white-hot, having appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and Conan... plus hitting #1 on the Alternative Radio. Their new single ‘Wake Up Call’ was #1 Most Added at Alternative Radio.

Once again, like their previous May 2016 appearance, Los Angeles’ The Wrecks will once again open.

The Wrecks’ new single Favorite Liar came out on March 18th, 2016, via Snorebox Records.

This upcoming fall tour will also include Toronto’s July Talk on the bill. We caught the band in June 2015 and wrote, “Toronto-based July Talk had this 'beauty & the beast' quality to their music, with the rough growly male singer Peter Dreimanis (who sounds like a young Tom Waits) and the beautiful Leah Fay. The two often play with each other as they trade vocals throughout their set.”

We caught British artist-producer Jack Garrett in August 2015 and October 2015... Garrett is back in Minneapolis - and he’s playing the biggest venue so far: at First Avenue.

When we saw him in 2015, he barely had enough songs to play a headlining 45-min set... but expect him to do a proper show this time around, now with his self-titled, self-written, self-performed, self-recorded, and self-produced debut record out now.

The Switch has been Tripped… and the Power is On—

Essex, UK band Nothing But Thieves didn’t have to commit any crimes to attract attention- the band is gaining more than enough on their own, clearly on the rise and obviously already playing too small a venue, on their recent sold-out stop to the Turf Club in St. Paul.

The evening started with a raucous and well-received set from Los Angeles band The Wrecks, who recently released their debut three-song EP, We are the Wrecks (on Snorebox Records).

The five-piece (Nick Anderson, Aaron Kelley, Nick Schmidt, Harrison Nussbaum, and Billy Nally) came out strong with ‘Wasted’ to start their eight-song set, working in a Lionel Richie cover in mid-set that ramped from gentle to rough-and-tumble, played the unreleased ‘James Dean’ (just written before heading out on the road), and ended with single, ‘Favorite Liar’, which is starting to turn heads and gain radio airplay.

Nothing But Thieves

Scratching the ‘Itch’ right away, Nothing But Thieves started their hour-long set with the driving track from their self-titled debut (on RCA Records), singer Conor Mason’s howling wails immediately evident.

The band’s big room sound is unabashedly rock, taking some of the bombast of Muse (NBT opened for the band in arenas recently) with Mason sounding part Matt Bellamy, part Jeff Buckley with a dash of The Darkness’ Justin Hawkins, in a style that completely suits their forge ahead sound.

The duel guitars of Joe Langridge-Brown and Dominic Craik complimented each other well all evening, reminiscent of Def Leppard’s Phil Collen and Steve Clark back in the ‘80s, in some ways.  “This is a whole lot of people in this building!” singer Mason remarked, surveying the crowd before launching into a hypnotic ‘Hanging’.

“We’re essentially a baby band, so we wanted to give something to you, ‘cause we’re new” Mason said, “Are there any Pixies fans in the house?” he asked, before the band launched into ‘Where is my Mind’, with Mason’s voice sounding much closer to Frank Black’s, than first imagined.

Setlist

‘Wake Up Call’, the band’s next US single, ended the band’s main set with its booming bass drum and jagged guitar intro, and is unsurprisingly the most-added track this week, at Alternative Radio.

After crowd chants of “N-B-T!” the band re-emerged for their encore, Mason impressed how loud the crowd was in asking them back.  The track ‘Lover’ was a quiet lilting mostly acoustic number that was one of the band’s earliest songs and an ideal vehicle to showcase Mason’s high-to-low vocal range.

“If you know this next one, please sing it very loudly” Mason said before ‘Trip Switch’ which has topped Billboard’s Alternative Chart and currently receives airplay on several area alt- and active rock stations.  ‘Ban the Music’ ended the show, leaving an enthusiastic and exhausted crowd still hungry for more.

If you missed a chance to see Nothing But Thieves on their club tour, you’re probably too late to see them in venues this small, as they are destined for bigger rooms in the U.S. like is already happening abroad, but will be no less entertaining, no matter the place played.
