I'll have to confess that we're pretty lucky to have Communion .... The Whigs I've often confused this garage Georgia band the Whigs with The Afghan Whigs. Anyway, the Whigs played a few tracks from their 2012 album, Enjoy The Company ("Staying Alive ", "Rock and Roll Forever", "Summer Heat".... Field Report To keep with the schedule, music started right on time at 2pm with Milwaukee's Field Report, playing tracks from their just-released album Marigolden (Partisan Records).....

The monthly Communion Clubnight is a great way to check out new and upcoming bands. We previously saw Johnnyswim, The Lone Bellow, Tennis, just to name a few, under the Communion banner. These shows usually also have local shops selling goods at the venue, for last night there were some arts/crafts shop and used $1 books, along with the usual full bar and pasta serving from the Loring Pasta Bar.

American Scarecrows

The first of four bands, American Scarecrows drew in a lot of local supports from their fans, friends and family. Their brief set included tracks from their latest Yesteryear and their debut album Keep Your Devils Around.

The full setlist: "Outskirts (Buried in the Sound)", "Depending On The Weather", "Cannon Canyon", "Gods of the West", "The Peak", "Cheshire", and "Stay The Same".

Water Liars

Mississippi's Water Liars took the stage next, announcing that they were pleased to be playing at "America's Best Bathroom".

Water Liars played tracks from their 2014 self titled album and their 2013 album Wyoming, including the title track, "Fake Heat" and "I Want Blood". Also, I don't know if it is just me, but I thought their bass sounded really overblown and distorted.

Field Report

Although from Milwaukee, Field Report had a lot of local support... including singer Chris Porterfield's parents who drove all the way from Rochester to see the band. Joining Chris on stage was Tom on bass and Shane on percussion.

The showcased some tracks from their recently released album Marigolden (Partisan Records), including "Home (Leave The Lights On)" and title track (which closed out their set).

The Whigs closed out the Communion show. Singer/guitarist Parker Gispert is in his rock mode, complete with sunglasses, and he effortlessly rocked out some tunes from the Whig's popular album Mission Control and Enjoy the Company... but also most of their set included tracks from their 2014 album Modern Creation (including the title track).

As you can see from their setlist, there was a block of four songs from the new album ("Friday Night", "The Particular", "The Difference Between One And Two", and "Modern Creation"), but thankfully the last block of the set were older familiar tracks and set finale "Already Young".

The Communion Clubnight series continues at the Turf Club in St Paul on November 18 and will feature Mikhael Paskalev, Count This Penny, Peter Miller of We Are The Willows.

The October Communion Club Night is next Tuesday, October 14th. This is a great value for the dollar, and if you're a student or MPR member, you can grab tickets for only $5. You must have a valid ID card.

Also, I'm not sure what's going on with the club, but next month, in November, it's moved to the Turf Club, in St Paul. Next month's Communion show will feature: Mikhael Paskalev, Count This Penny, Peter Miller of We Are The Willows.

Anyway, the October 14th show at the Varsity will feature:

The Whigs: Paste Magazine called this Athens-based band, "the last true rock and roll bands." The Whigs are currently touring in support of their new album Modern Creation.

Field Report: With Communion expanding to Wisconsin, it's only natural that they've also signed on new artists like Milwaukee-based Field Report. Their sophomore record, Marigolden, is out now.

Water Liars: This Mississippi-based trio is currently signed to Big Legal Mess/Fat Possum Records with a current self-titled album.

American Scarecrows: With these Communion shows, there is the staple Minneapolis-based band, and for this show, it's American Scarecrow. They are an Americana/folk band.

As half of the songwriting team for Squeeze, Glenn Tilbrook is back in the US to play tracks from his acoustic solo album Happy Ending. The record is described as "bits of Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits". The tour started late September and continues to New York at the end of October.... and stopping by St Paul's Turf Club next Tuesday, October 14th.

Opening up for Tilbrook will be Jefferson Grizzard, singer/songwriter from Nashville, Tennessee. His latest album Learning How to Lie is out now on Back Porch Syndicate Records.

Communion announces Communion Clubnights

Since Communion came to Minneapolis in 2013, we've been covering their monthly shows at the Varsity Theater. I'll have to confess that we're pretty lucky to have Communion series in Minneapolis, as one of a few handful of cities.

After a summer break of three months (June to August), Communion, now rebranded themselves as Communion Clubnights, will be returning next week, September 16th. It is the same format: music, some pop-up shops, and MC by local radio DJ Jade.

I want to say that The Whigs was just in Minneapolis a few weeks ago... but I last saw this band at Turf Club in 2013.

Again, we're only one of nine cities that host Communion Clubnights, usually these things only exist in major cities like New York or Los Angeles... to have it in Minneapolis is pretty awesome.

"Turn that sh** up," screamed guitarist/singer Lindsey Troy, half of Deap Vally at the Turf Club in St. Paul, last night.

BOLLYWOOD

Opening up the show was Minneapolis' Bollywood, a band that is more into 80s films than actually Bollywood pictures. I'm pretty sure in-between their set, they played dialogues from the classic Repo Man. I didn't really know their music, but I'm also certain this noise/punk/experimental band played "Young" ("When I was young no one told me what to do") from their 2013 OK Animal release.

THE WHIGS

The Whigs were headlining, but I was not there to cover the band. Apologies to the Whigs, I did not stay for the full set. I've often confused this garage Georgia band with The Afghan Whigs.

Anyway, the Whigs played a few tracks from their 2012 album, Enjoy The Company ("Staying Alive ", "Rock and Roll Forever", "Summer Heat "), and I felt the majority of their set is from their popular Mission Control album ("Like A Vibration", "Production City", "Hot Bed", "Already Young ", " Need You Need You").

As for the gorgeous ladies of Deap Vally, they played pretty much everything off their debut Get Deap! EP ("Lies ", "Ain't Fair", "Gonna Make My Own Money", and "End Of The World"), but throwing in a few new songs like "Bad for my Body" and "Walk of Shame". The former song was the highlight of their set.

My only complaint was that their set was so short (under 30 minutes), but it was well worth the long drive to St Paul to see them last night.

Check out Deap Vally on tour, they are promoting their Get Deap! EP, but be sure to check out their song on the "True Blood" soundtrack, also out this month.
