British boy band The Vamps recently stopped in Minneapolis at First Avenue's main stage as part of their USA tour (which is ending tonight in Los Angeles). By request of the band, all of their US venues will cost $25 and is all ages. Although young, the boy band demonstrated that they are indeed touring veterans, hitting all the right notes and putting on a very tight show - unlike the sloppiness of the recently reformed Babes in Toyland or The Replacements show.
Opening up the show was Before You Exit (or B.Y.E. for short), from Orlando, Florida. The cool thing is that three of the band members are actually real life brothers (Connor McDonough, Riley McDonough, and Toby McDonough), although Toby confessed that many people think he's adopted because of his hair color.
According to the brothers, it was clear that Wednesday's show was "best show on the tour so far!" This must be in response to hearing their fans singing back some of their songs, including their new single "Model" and an Ed Sheeran cover "Thinking Out Loud".
Like B.Y.E., Los Angeles' The Tide also had a very brief 25-min set, but their songs are slightly longer than the standard three-minute pop songs. They only played four songs, but instead of opting for a fifth song, they actually spent a few minutes taking a photo of the audience (which they said was "the loudest crowd"). They did know how to work the crowd, asking them to clap, asking them put their camera phone's lights in the air.... and of course, in typical young group, were more than happy to obliged.
My favorite moment was when lead singer Levi Jones wiped his sweaty body with a towel... and then proceeded to throwing it into an eager audience.
In between stage setups, the DJ did a great job playing music for the crowd. Mostly pop songs from the 90s, which I didn't think the younger teen audience would get... but when Fountain of Wayne's "Stacy's Mom" came on, the entire floor roared with girls singing the song!
All the bands on the bill are young and, but you should also note that they are also playing their own instruments (unlike One Direction or 98° or Backstreet Boys or New Kids on the Block). Of course, ironically The Vamps is dubbed 'the new One Direction'.
With only one album under their belt, the band played an hour of mostly songs from Meet the Vamps, but throwing in a few cover songs including a medley of covers (Mark Ronson's "Uptown Funk", White Stripe's "Seven Nation Army", Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off", and Miley Cyrus' "We Can't Stop") and full covers of Sum 41's "In Too Deep" and My Chemical Romance's "Teenagers".
The Tide's Levi Jones also came on stage for "Somebody to You" to lead his vocals. Other guests included an older guitarist (Fin?) helping them play Sum 41's cover song "In Too Deep".
Midway in their set, the band all left drummer Tristan Evans alone so he can do a five minute drum solo. This served as a nice intermission for the rest of the band to take a breather before coming back on stage feeling energized.
They ended their set with their remake of Simon & Garfunkel's 1970 song "Cecilia", which they've retitled as "Oh Cecilia (Breaking My Heart)". The song has original lyrics, with the exception of the singalong chorus.
Based on the strong turnout and support, we'll be seeing The Vamps again in Minneapolis when they come back in support of their sophomore album - which they mentioned will be coming out November 27th.
