The annual NME Awards is happening on Wednesday, February 29, 2012 (tickets to the event goes on sale Feb 3rd at 9am). Host for this year is Jack Whitehall (I think Jarvis Cocker hosted last year, or was it the year before?). Bands confirmed to play are: Kasabian, The Vaccines, and Florence + The Machine (with The Horrors).
It should be a good night, I like all those bands.
So, let's start taking some bets on the nominees (hint: I would put some money on Arctic Monkeys, they have won numerous NME awards from 2006-2008).
Matt Helders, Arctic Monkeys, adds:
We're up for all the big ones - we're very happy. We had a lot of fun making 'Suck It And See' and it's great to be up for Best Live Band. That's all we do - record or play live - so it's good to be recognised!
Yeah, the award might as well be theirs.
Best British Band Arctic Monkeys Bombay Bicycle Club The Horrors Kasabian Muse
Best International Band Arcade Fire Foo Fighters Justice Odd Future (OFWGKTA) The Strokes
Best Solo Artist Adele Florence + The Machine Frank Turner Laura Marling Miles Kane Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds
Best New Band Foster The People Lana Del Rey Tribes The Vaccines Wu Lyf
Best Live Band Arctic Monkeys Kasabian Muse Pulp Two Door Cinema Club
Best Album Artic Monkeys - Suck It and See The Horrors - Skying Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds - Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds PJ Harvey - Let England Shake The Vaccines - What did you Expect from the Vaccines?
Since there are a billion categories, from "Villain of the Year" to "Hottest Female", I won't list it all here. To see the full list, head over to news.weheartmusic.com.
The Vaccines: shortest album ever, clocking under 35 minutes... but "What did you expect from the Vaccines?". They are quite good, their song, "Nørgaard", is about model Amanda Nørgaard.
The Vines: Still alive with Future Primitive, their "best and most consistent record"
Papa vs Pretty: according to Sally's facts, Thomas Rawle spend hours noodling on his guitar.
Music festivals - too many and too expensive?
Voltaire Twins: Real life twins (unlike the Thompson Twins?). Song of the show is "Animalia", more details on their website, voltairetwins.com
BONUS: Ilke Hincer sent in his music video for "Careless", you can see the full video at youtube.com. The story, lyrics, vocals, direction were all by Hincer.
I saw Margaret Cho last year, she's funny, but it's not a show for kids.
Anyway, I wanted to let you know that starting today, her Grammy-nominated album, Cho Dependent, can be had for as low as $1. This promotion is great if you haven't already got the album. And if you already own the CD, no problem, the digital download also includes two extra unreleased tracks.
Portion (20%) of this download goes to Immediate Justice, a charity for young women and queer folks of color. So be generous, if you've got the cash. If you're the #1 top donor, you get to appear in Cho's upcoming music video for "Asian Adjacent", filming in Los Angeles on July 24th. Second prize is a set of steak knives. Just kidding, you get a Cho Dependent package (tote bag, CHO HO tank top, posters, and an autographed LP). If 500 people donate, we all get "Sexting", an unreleased song from Drag Queen Sherry Vine featuring Margaret Cho. Make it happen.

It's inevitable, Beady Eye will conquer America this Fall 2011.
Lots of buzz, this post-Oasis band, lead by Liam Gallagher will play some key dates in America, hot off their debut album, Different Gear, Still Speeding. As I have previously warned/mentioned, you have to see this band this early in the stage of their career, otherwise you'll always kick yourself for not seeing them when they were starting out.
I know they're not even coming here until November and December, but you may want to buy tickets now before they sell out. Tickets goes on sale July 15th (Friday), with the exception of San Francisco - that goes on sale July 17th.

French electro-shoegaze band, M83, aka Anthony Gonzalez, will be touring the US this year. It's been over two years since his last live performance, so people are eagerly awaiting to see him.
General ticket sales are available to purchase today (July 12th), however, if you were a fan, you had early access as early as July 6th. Hopefully, when he comes around Minneapolis, we'll cover him.

Speaking of Kill Rock Stars, I missed Thao & Mirah the last time they were here too. This was not my fault, BOBBY's van broke down and Led to Sea had failed me.

Well, the Arctic Monkeys are back and they are returning back to First Ave, and I'm certain it will probably sell out like the last time. If you don't like crowded hipster shows, best avoid this one, otherwise get your tickets before they sell out.
Quite an early, but sold-out, gig for Arctic Monkeys and The Vaccines at First Avenue, in Minneapolis, last night, May 28th.
First of all, this is an excellent billing, unlike previous years of teaming up Arctic Monkeys with the all-girls pop group The Like, in 2009, and punk-ish Be Your Own Pet in 2007, Vaccines seems more garagey rock and in tune with what Arctic Monkeys are all about.
Just to give you a little background on The Vaccines, they're a fairly new band, having only formed last year. They signed to Columbia Records and released What Did You Expect from the Vaccines? in the UK in March (I was told by a fan at the show that their album isn't out in the US yet and they were going to pick up the album at the merch table). I did get a chance to listen to the album, which comes out May 31st, and I really like how they sound like they're a band from the 60s, particularly how catchy "Wreckin' Bar (Ra Ra Ra)" and "A Lack Of Understanding" sounded on the album and live (so much I had to tweeted it).
They ended their set with their most energic song, "Nørgaard", something about "going steady", but since she's only seventeen, "she's probably not ready". It's a pretty fun, but short, song, but it definitely keeps the audience wanting more.
So, this was my third time seeing Arctic Monkeys, so it was nice to see the band grow from naive clean-cut youth, to shaggy-haired dude, to dome bowl hair. Performancewise, I noticed that Alex Turner is doing more on stage now - whether it's jumping on the drum stands, or talking a little more between songs.
He knows his audience, after the slowest song on their set, "Cornerstone", Turner said, "I know what you want to hear, you want to hear more like this--". He then started playing the intro to "I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor".
As you can see from the setlist, they did some new songs from their forthcoming album, Suck It and See, which isn't out until June 7th. Highlight from the set is their first-ever live performance of "All My Own Stunts". According to Turner, they've never played the song live before last night.
If you can see both bands on the bill, it's worth it, otherwise, the following are dates The Vaccines are scheduled to appear in the US.
5/29 Denver, CO Ogden Theatre
5/31 Salt Lake City, UT In The Venue
6/2 Pomona, CA Fox Theatre
6/3 Los Angeles, CA Hollywood Palladium ** SOLD OUT

8/10 Seattle, WA Showbox at the market
8/11 Portland, OR Crystal Ballroom
8/13 San Francisco, CA Outside lands
9/16 -9/18 Austin City Limits
South by Southwest, aka SXSW, is the annual film, interactive, and music festival that takes place in Austin, Texas. It would seem that this year (2011) is at its biggest, with reports coming at 17,000 registered visitors (grown from last year's 14,000).
The key word is registered, I suspect Austin draws at least three or four times that number. I have been listening to the "tech" part of the SXSW reports and it just sounds like it's become one giant party... and not so much the tech-thing. Some celebrities were spotted there, in particular, Felicia Day.
The music part of SXSW officially started late yesterday and will end this Sunday. Over 2,000 bands are officially registered to play, but obviously there are a ton of unofficial ones as well. If you walk down the street, some bands are playing in the streets.
Dan, man on the scene, was kind enough to send in his report:
So far we have seen Jamie Woon, Kid Canaveral, Withered Hand, OMD, Dry the Rivet, Bangles and I'm sitting at the new ACL Theater to see Bob Geldof.
Wednesday: Jamie Woon at the British Music Welcome Event. He is a techno soul singer. Not bad. Lacks in the melody.
Thursday: Bangles. Event name was Daisy Rock Maurice's Small Town Sound. One hour set with all the hits and a cover of the Nazz's "Open My Eyes" (Todd Rundgren's first band). They sounded great. The harmonies are still there.
Friday: Here is Yuck at the Pitchfork Show. Great indie sound for most songs. They had to ruin it with a 5 min feedback frenzy. Always lose interest in that type of song. Been done too many times already.
Friday: Edwyn Collins. Great set. I think it has to go down as most inspirational set I will see. I would know if I could do it myself. But played new, old, etc. Also let his son sing on one of the songs. Closed with "A Girl Like You".
