I just binged Netflix’s latest crime thriller, Dept. Q… which just dropped yesterday (May 29th). This series is about detective Morck, as he solves cold cases. Morck was a top working detective, until he, and his partner got shot in a crime scene they were working on.
The story starts off with Morck assigned to lead Department Q, with his new bodyguard/assistant named Akram. Akram, who I quite like, should actually be in charge, as he seems more rational and capable than Morck.
This debut season is about the case of Merrit, a woman who has been missing for four years. The real mystery, with plenty of false leads and red herring, is who kidnapped Merrit and why. As the nine episodes ticked down, information are slowly revealed to us, and it wasn’t what I thought it was. Still, the ending was satisfying and the story is complete.
The first season is based on The Keeper of Lost Causes, written by Jussi Adler-Olsen. That book was made into a two-hour movie, so if you’re looking for a condense movie, it’s worth checking out.
My biggest problem with Dept Q is the Scottish accents. I had to turn on the subtitles to understand what was being said. I wish they had filmed and written it for Boston, which was the original intention of the Netflix series.

If you’re wondering about the ‘rock’ theme of Dept Q, it was what director Frank wanted when he sent Rivera a playlist, with songs from Flogging Molly, The Tartan Rockers, and Dropkick Murphys. Rivera said, “There was an aggression and muscularity in that music that Scott wanted translated into our story. Alongside that, we have our main character, DCI Carl Morck - a man whose life is in free fall - so the melody of the main title keeps descending. But my favorite part of the process was that the harmonic bed was built on a set of chords Scott himself had written. It made perfect sense to connect all these ideas into what became the main title of Dept. Q.”

Brendan Foley’s Sherlock & Daughter is currently airing on the CW and Discovery+ right now. It started last month, April 16, and will end on June 11th with the eighth episode.
I have to say, of all the Sherlock shows, with Elementary being my favorite, Sherlock & Daughter is simply my least favorite. Even though I did not love it, I think the audience that it’s intended for (teens or young adults), will like it. Although the show is based in Victorian-era London, the dialogue and writing is more modern. For example, there’s a point in the show where Holmes finds a horse carriage boosting crime (like a modern car crimes). It’s so dumb!
Speaking of dumb, what I don’t like about the show is that the writers made Sherlock Holmes, into a bit of an idiot. I’m sure there’s a reason for how he lost Dr Watson, or why he fears the “red ribbon”. The thought that Holmes had some sort of love affair with a Native American woman, thus spawning “the daughter” Amelia.
After Amelia’s mother was murdered, she travels to London to find her dad, Sherlock Holmes. There, she helps Holmes solves a kidnapping, and the rest of the series aiding Holmes on various cases.
I actually gave up on the series, shortly after they introduced Moriarty, who is running his empire from his “prison”.
Poker Face: Season 2 (2025)

You guys remember that I love the first season of Poker Face, when it first aired in 2023 (despite the fact that I don’t love the lead actress Natasha Lyonne, who plays Charlie, the human lie detector).
The story structure of Poker Face is really interesting. The first half of the show, you see the crime… and the second half of the show, which is where Charlie comes in and using her “bulls***” powers.
The first three episodes of Season 2 basically wraps up the first Season, by tidying up the Mob hit on Charlie. Once that’s taken care of, it’s back to crime of the week. The great thing about Poker Face is that you don’t need to watch it religiously, you can watch it out of order … or, in my case, if I miss a week, no big deal. That’s how I’ve been watching the show, because I just realized I missed Episode 5 due to the Memorial Holiday and there’s no urgency for me to go back (in fact, I might not even bother!)
As usual, the music choices in these Poker Face episodes have been very good. The recent one predominantly features The Prodigy’s “Shoot Down” and “Spitfire” songs (they seem to use the same beats and rhythm but with different lyrics… although one can argue all of Prodigy’s songs are the same).
They also used “Ring My Bell” by Anita Ward and “I Palindrome I” by They Might Be Giants in previous episodes… the later brought a smile to my face. It really is a good song to end the pilot.
