This show was actually headlined by Cut/Copy with The Presets as support. We caught Cut/Copy four months earlier (in May 2008) so seeing them again so soon was a little surprising. There are no photos of Cut/Copy or Presets as we were not given permission to photograph them. Remember, this was at a time when cameras were forbidden at concert halls… and camera phones were starting to get popular with the introduction of the iPhone in 2007.

Anyway, the most interesting thing is that Cut/Copy asked New York’s Kordan to come tour with them. On a whim, Kordan agreed and as a result, their debut live performance took place over at the Fine Line Music Café in Minneapolis on September 16, 2008.

For a band that's never played live before, Kordan's first show at the Fine Line Cafe in Minneapolis last night (Sep 16^th, 2008), was surprisingly effortless. I think at some point the bassist had to look at his written notes, but overall, they seem to have it together.

I was deeply impressed that Cut/Copy personally asked them to open up for them on the first section of their tour. Although, I will admit that I don't think Kordan sounds like Cut/Copy or the Presets... Kordan comes off as sounding more indie-rock.

The highlight of their short setlist was Deidre Muro's singing and these "Save Tibet" dudes.

Oh also, I was surprise to hear that singer, Arthur, has a very weird non-American accent (Spanish). Anyway, be sure to check out the rest of the tour:

I am re-posting some of these older articles because I’m in the process of moving photos from Flickr to W♥M local hosting. I am also updating the old articles to something more standard … and perhaps add some new commentaries.

Cut/Copy headlined the 7th Street Entry on May 6, 2008. This is the first leg of their tour with Black Kids… the band would return later to Minneapolis in September 2008 with The Presets.

Mobius Band

Opening up for them was Mobius Band and Black Kids. Both bands did a pretty short setlist, lasting about 30-40 minutes each, which is understandable as having three bands can be too much if they all did full sets.

The trio Mobius Band are from Brooklyn, New York, with a jerky and energetic Ben (?) pushing buttons and moving back and forth. When he's not doing the buttons thing, he actually also plays guitars.

Black Kids’s set was short. The cardboard setlist shows 9 songs, but it felt like 6 songs.

Singer Reggie Youngblood, sure sweat a lot. The whole band looked really cute with the two girls, Dawn & Ali, doing synchronizing singing. The crowd do love them, and I suspect many of them were there to see them - because many of them were wearing the $20 tour shirts that reads "I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You".

Cut/Copy are doing great on their tour throughout the US (selling out at most popular venues, adding additional dates due to demand), before making a triumph return to their hometown of Melbourne, Australia, to two, count 'em, two sold-out show at the Forum.

Black Kids Setlist

I was pretty impressed with their manufactured/pre-recorded 80s-techno new wave style beats, and they worked the very packed room of young hipsters and college frat boys to a frenzy with their demands of "dance, jump!"

I couldn't help but wondered what they would do without their beat box, as it seems they depend on it a lot. In fact, at some point, the bassist left the stage and the music just kept going without him.

Australia’s dance duo The Presets (Julian Hamilton and Kim Moyes) is touring North America in support of their new album Hi Viz (Modular Records); stopping by the Turf Club in St Paul on Wednesday, October 3rd.

Brighton’s Blood Red Shoes opened the show, the stage completely lit in a deep green (which remained unchanged throughout their entire set), possibly due to the fact that the artwork for their forthcoming 2019 album Get Tragic is also in the same green tone. They didn’t play any of those 2019 songs, it’s really not the time to start promoting those singles, but instead concentrated on their various hit singles.

You may recall that when we caught the duo (guitarist Laura-Mary Carter and drummer Steven Ansell) opened for the Fatellis, they really won our hearts with their catchy, anthemic songs. Our favorite is still the great singalong “Light It Up”, which Ansell introduced as, “You guys may know this one.”

They commented on the weather (a miserable, rainy night) as “feels like being in England… raining and cold!” Although the band has been in Minneapolis twice (once at the 7th Street in 2014 and once at First Ave with the Fatellis), they admitted that this was their first time in St Paul.

Up in the front were perhaps some of their biggest fans, including a guy with a tattoo of the band on his arm. With these diehard, dedicated fans in the area, you can bet that it won’t be long until Blood Red Shoes returns to the Twin Cities.

If you love hard alternative guitar/drum combo rock, Blood Red Shoes is a band worth watching out for. Hopefully with their 2019 album coming out in January, that would only mean the duo will be back headlining their own shows next year.

As for The Presets, we’ve heard about the duo since their 2005 debut album Beams. When they went straight to #1 on the ARIA charts with Apocalypso in 2008, we knew they were special. In fact, after numerous tour (including support for the incredible popular Daft Punk), The Presets earned “Best Live Act” from inthemix Awards.

The Australian band only comes to American once in a while, the last time we saw them, it was at First Avenue in May 2013 and said, “ The Australian duo broke into the mainstream with their #1 album, Apocalypso, spawning six hit singles: "My People", "This Boy's in Love", "Talk Like That", "Yippiyo-Ay", "If I Know You" and "Kicking and Screaming".”

Back in town, and again, of course the Presets brought the strobe lights. If you have photosensitive epilepsy, you should probably not go to a Presets show. To be fair, the strobe effects were used to sync with the music, and create a pumping sound. A video screen was used against their music, sometime to very cool effects.

If you love dance music, like Chemical Brothers or Daft Punk (but with live vocal mix), you should go to a Presets show. Their brief North American tour will end in Brooklyn on October 9th.

The Canadian electronic band Dragonette made a stop at the First Ave Mainroom Wednesday night along with Australia's The Presets and the LA-based DJ’s Classixx.

From the time Dragonette came on stage to when they left, they were a highenergy electro-pop powerhouse. Playing songs mostly off their Bodyparts album (Universal Music Canada) released this past September, and mixing in some songs off their past albums they gave a great performance.

Martina Sorbara (vocals) danced throughout the whole show, and her powerful energy was felt through the crowd and they were jumping right along with her. During "Hello", the crowd belted every line of the song she did with French producer/DJ Martin Solveig.

THE PRESETS

They will be continuing their co-headlining US tour with The Presets. The Australian duo broke into the mainstream with their #1 album, Apocalypso, spawning six hit singles: "My People", "This Boy's in Love", "Talk Like That", "Yippiyo-Ay", "If I Know You" and "Kicking and Screaming". The Presets may have another hit album on their hands with their third full-length album, Pacifica, especially after their single, "Ghosts", was recently awarded "Single of the Year" (Reader's Choice) for the 4th annual Australian Rolling Stone Awards.

SATURDAY 11/03: TRIPLE ROCK, MINNEAPOLIS

Sure, you already know how much we love Asteroids Galaxy Tour. I will be there to see them at the Triple Rock next Saturday.

Opening up for them on this tour is Millionyoung, a stagename for indie/electronica musician, Mike Diaz, from Florida.

His album Variable is set for release next year, February 12th, on Rix Records/Old Flame Records. His current release is called Amanecer, which came out July 31st, 2012.

Last year, Millionyoung's mixtape for The Guardian's 1,000th "New Band of the Day" was called "chillwave" on guardian.co.uk.

SATURDAY 11/03: TIPITANA'S, NEW ORLEANS

Generationals is a New Orleans duo (Ted Joyner and Grant Widmer), who just released their Lucky Numbers EP earlier this month (October 2nd). The band argued that it's "not really a 'New Orleans' record."

They later explained that they recorded the record all over, but not in New Orleans.

"On every other record, we've done most or all of the tracking in one studio," Joyner said. "But for these new songs we ended up taking all our mics and pre-amps and stuff and just going and recording wherever."

Interestingly enough, the band is in the middle of their national tour and will be making a stop in their homecity on November 3rd, and leaving for Texas the next day.

Oscar is covering this Cedar show for me. I will drop to take some photos and then I'll be going across the street to Triple Rock.

I've already spotlighted Dan Deacon and his America album, so I'll just quickly mention that he's got an app on iTunes and Android.

Apparently, during the show, your (smart) phone can become part of the performance. You don't need WiFi or cellular data to have it work, so if you just have an iPod Touch, you can participate. It should be interesting to see this experience. I have already downloaded the app, so I'm ready to test it out at the live show.

This Saturday is quite busy for us, we're covering Diamond Rings/Gold Fields at 7th Street and Rah Rah at the Fine Line Café in Minneapolis, plus Preset/YACHT in Chicago (Kate is covering this). If I'm not dead, I may swing by the 400 Bar to see Crushed Out.

I am told Crushed Out used to be known as Boom Chick, they are described as an American honky tonk surf rock duo.

Their album, Want to Give, comes out November 6, 2012 via Cool Clear Water Records.

The Presets is an Australian electronic music duo (Julian Hamilton and Kim Moyes). Their album, Apocalypso, went straight to #1 on the ARIA Albums Chart, and they won "Best Dance Release" and "Best Group", so these guys are a big deal in Australia.

They are wrapping up their US tour this month:
