Heart to Gold headlined the 7th St Entry, in Minneapolis, last night, December 6th. The local band previously opened for Hunny, Remo Drive, Hockey Dad, Dingus, and Jeff Rosenstock, etc., but this show was special because it was their first headlining show. And it was sold-out.

On a brisk winter evening in Minnesnowta, I made a rookie mistake and didn’t check in the social media platforms to get set times for a solid lineup of local acts. I missed the entire sets of Lapdogs and Killusonline.

Lapdogs has been on my radar ever since their 2020 release “Teeth”. “Hold yer Horses” is one of the better local tracks I’ve heard the last five years. If they make more tracks like “Skeletons” (newest single), “40 hrs”, and “Chasing my Tail”, they will be on the right trail.

Killusonline was the electronic blend of the rock group. “Inside Out” and “Ura Gona” are two of the latest singles.

Gramma

Gramma was third on the bill and was able to catch a couple tracks. Love the instrumentals but the vocals were a little heavy for me.

Now, on to the stars of the show, Heart to Gold. I’ve been wanting to see a local band pull off a mosh pit with ease. A sold-out show at the 7th Street Entry with rabid/die-hard fans causing quite the scene and crowd participation. They even had a ring leader of the mosh that would climb on the pipes on the ceiling and surf back into the crowd. Fans would climb on stage and jump right in for crowd surfing, including the bandmates from Gramma on the encore.

“Respect”, “Tigers Jaw” and “Tokyo” the first track off their 2018 release got the crowd in a frenzy. They skipped out on my favorite track “Wave” off the new record but played most of the others off the 2022 release “Tom”.

For fans of The Orwells, Blink 182, and Rise Against, this is the band for you.

Heart of Gold is heading to the east coast and Chicago for a small tour with Born without Bones and Housewife all starting this weekend through December 18th.

Chicago’s The Orwells made an appearance at the Triple Rock Social Club in Minneapolis in support of their third album Terrible Human Beings (Canvasback/Atlantic).

Fellow Chicagoans The Walters (Luke Olson, Walter Kosner, Michael Tirabassi, Danny Wells, Charlie Ekhaus) joined the Orwells on their US tour. Although it’s not stated, based on interactions and hero-worshipping, you got the feeling that the band may actually have been named after their guitarist Walter Kosner (on the far left of the stage).

The Minneapolis show was also special to The Walters as their bassist Danny Wells was originally from here. There were friends & family at the show to welcome the opener back in town.

Most of the songs on their a mix of 2015’s Young Men and 2014’s Songs For Dads (such as ‘I Love You So’). Midway in their set, they had to re-tune the bass, so the band sang an impromptu song about walking down the street for St Patrick’s Day.

Near the end of their set, they dedicated ‘Autumn Leaves’ to Danny’s dad, as it was his favorite song. The older song may have been out of practice, as one of their guitarist confessed (jokingly?) he had no idea how to play it.

The turnout for The Orwells at the Triple Rock Social Club show was very good, indicating that they’ve successfully built up a large following in the Minneapolis area. We’re also not sure if singer Mario Cuomo is related to Rivers Cuomo, but since the band announced an entire UK tour with Weezer... it sounds more than just a coincident.

The Orwells’ lineup hasn’t changed since 2009 (Mario Cuomo as singer, Dominic Corso on guitar, Matt O'Keefe also on guitar, Grant Brinner on bass, and Henry Brinner on drums), which also tells us that they’re all close friends & family (at least on the Brinners’ case).

Shortly after ‘Fry’ was played, Henry Brinner thrashed on the drums so hard that he actually broke the cymbal... leaving the rest of the band telling (bad) jokes, while Henry tried and fix his drum setup. Outside of the random broken guitar strings, the rest of the show went on without any issues.

They ended their set with our favorite ‘Double Feature’. We previously described the song as “a small dose of Weezer, a large dose of Pavement and an even larger dose of badass”, and it delivered live... leaving the show on a very strong note.

Terrible Human Beings is available on Canvasback/Atlantic Records. Look for The Orwells with Weezer this October.

The Paper Kites will be opening! We caught the Melbourne band last year and wrote, “Their fanbase here is incredible, and they just love the audience (which were mostly young college-bound or college students). There is something hopelessly romantic about the Paper Kites’ songs that speaks to their fans.”

From The Orwells' album Terrible Human Beings, out February 17 on Canvasback Music.

We all knew this guy in high school:

Came from the wrong side of the tracks
Showed up with scratches down his back
Got his Camaro painted black
And he ain’t ever comin’ back

This guy was all about muscle cars, loud music and PBR tallboys, and “Double Feature” brings him to life.

The song captures your attention right off the bat with an undulating guitar hook which is just outstanding. It also has clever lyrics which speak of duality:

Could’ve been a madman or a teacher
Could’ve been a bad man or a preacher

The vocals vary between a raspy shout and a melodic purr. In the first few verses the vocal is somewhat more subdued than in the fourth verse, when Mario Cuomo’s voice gains volume and intensity and becomes a full-on rebel yell. Talk about pumping you up.

This song has a long instrumental interlude, but despite its length you want to keep listening. It begins with a tight interplay of drums and bass, segueing into a tasty, repeating guitar progression that ends each time on a plucky, playful high note, and then progresses into a full-on guitar solo. The guitar provides a soaring, satisfying buildup, gathering steam like a freight train.

Near the song’s end a muted, distorted overlay of vocal tracks from previous verses comes in. The effect is basically that of a bunch of voices saying different things at once, capped off by experimental screeching guitar sounds á la Sonic Youth.

“Double Feature” is like a small dose of Weezer, a large dose of Pavement and an even larger dose of badass.

The Orwells will be touring in support of their new album Terrible Human Beings beginning February 20, 2017.

Perhaps you caught Elmhurst, Illinois quintet The Orwells’ now notorious performance on David Letterman this past Wednesday night or at least caught wind of it as the video blew up all over social media the following day. While some folks have been dismissing the band as being sloppy and cliche or hailing them as a breath of fresh air for their brash spontaneity, no one can deny that they certainly made an impression. Any band that encourages Paul Shaffer to play his own version of their song while reenacting the lead singers’ writhing antics gets my mark - or at least my curious attention.

The band, consisting of Mario Cuomo (and his luxurious Robert Plant-esque locks) on vocals, Dominic Corso and Matt O'Keefe on guitar, Grant Brinner on bass and his brother Henry Brinner on drums, formed in 2009 while all the members were in high school. In fact, the band graduated early in 2013 so they could concentrate on their music. After breaking into the Chicago music scene, the band scored some high profile gigs like playing Lollapalooza last year and opening a few dates of Arctic Monkeys’ current US tour.

So are these guys worth your valuable listening time? Are they victims of an unjust hype machine? Decide for yourself and catch The Orwells on tour this spring. The band kicks off a 16-date tour starting in March and going through April with a gig at the Triple Rock on April 2nd.

The Orwells are opening up for Fidlar at the 7th Street Entry on Saturday night (November 2nd). You may recall how we described Fidlar's show as "sweat-dripped frenzy ", so this should be a fun night for all young people.

This five piece (Cousins Mario Cuomo on vocals, Dominic Corso on guitar, twins Grant on bass, Henry Brinner on drums, and Matt O’Keefe on guitar) have together since 2008, when they were in 9th grade… but we first came to know them as one of the few American (from Chicago) band to be featured in NME's Great Escape Showcase from earlier this year.
