This Portland, Oregon-based band (previously based in Athens, Georgia) just released their fourth album, I Am The West on Pop Heart Records (it would seem they're changing their name to Able Heart Records?). I think names are important, unfortunately, Lovers suffers from that common-word name that makes it hard to search, as well as other bands using the same moniker (case in point, the French band The Lovers). Still, that didn't stop fans from finding out about them and, er, loving them and setting up fan sites.
While I am unfamiliar with their previous releases, from my understanding, the new record is more in the direction of "sexy and danceable" music... mostly credited because of producer Suny Lyons.
Berk's frank (and complicated) lyrics and singing-style are easily liked and identify with. Her subjects seems to be on love, relationships and obsessions. A perfect example of the love/relationship-thing is on "How The Story Ends". Who wouldn't identify with that song?
There are two stand-out tracks on the album, the first is "Wrestling Horses". This song seems to have been inspired by Christopher McCandless and his venture Into the Wild, where he ultimately died in Alaska. In the Lovers song, Berk threaten that maybe she'll ride her bicycle to Alaska and die. The lyrics describes her wanting to run away from her lover, held together by the catchy chorus line: "I've been wrestling horses to the ground/wrestling horses."
The second and favorite track is, "Let's Stay Lost". It's a love song, which I think she's even admit that all her songs are love songs. This one is about that last night that you can see that special someone - and you just want to be with them forever in that instant. At least that's how I interpreted it.
I Am The West might be a digital-only release. You can get it via amazon for $8.99.
When asked about the digital-only thing:
Who knows, maybe they'll put out a vinyl, one thing is certain, this ain't their last release... to paraphrase her "This Ain't The Last Song".Oh man, I actually just spent half an hour listening to my brother try to convince me to make some sort of tangible element for this release. So we'll see what I end up doing with the thing. I'm just chomping at the bit to put it out. And I think people only buy CDs anymore in Japan?
