"Come closer to the front. Let's do drugs," said The Fresh & Onlys lead singer Tim Cohen before the start of their gig at the Triple Rock Social Club in Minneapolis, last night, July 15th.

The Shilohs

Typically there are three bands on the bill for the Triple Rock, starting with Vancouver's The Shilohs. Although Canadians, the band is influenced by Middle American rock, particularly R.E.M. (Athens), Big Star (Memphis) and the Replacements (Minneapolis)... so you can see that the band was really excited to play in Minneapolis.

With the exception of the drummer, everyone sings lead vocals in the band. They played a couple of tracks from their latest self-titled album ("Palm Readers" and "Queen Light Queen Dark"), which is out now on Light Organ Records.

The rest of their set seems to be taken from debut album So Wild, but written in shorthand. Also, right before their final song "The Place Where Nobody Knows I Go", they took a Polaroid photo of the audience and commented that they had to do this for every gig... I guess to showcase the places that no one knew they went to...

Ages and Ages

Almost all, if not all, of Ages and Ages' songs requires handclapping, that's an indication of how I feel about Ages and Ages (previously stylized as Agesandages). We last saw the seven-piece (now six-piece) in 2011, opening up for Lake. I was rather impressed with their big sound and described them as "upbeat, catchy, happy, and melodic."

This time around, the Portland band is touring towards Newport Folk Festival, supporting their sophomore album Divisionary, out now on Partisan Records. New tracks (at least live) sounded fantastic, including their big a cappella style song "Divisionary (Do The Right Thing)," which closed out their set.

Fresh & Onlys

The Fresh & Onlys are a garage/pastoral psychedelic rock band consisting of singer Tim Cohen (of Black Fiction), bassist Shayde Sartin, guitarist Wymond Miles (sporting one of the biggest hair I've ever seen), and drummer Kyle Gibson.

The San Francisco band is currently signed to Mexican Summer, since their release of 2012's Long Slow Dance. Their latest release is called House of Spirits, which is out now.

Setlist

If you love the new album, this is definitely the tour to catch them on as they played their entire album, start to finish, live. As Cohen explained, "So when you bring the record home, you are not going to be surprise."

Taking a look at their written setlist, they left off a few tracks, but according to my notes, they played all of the songs, including "Candy" and finale "Madness."

When they stepped off, the venue started playing the house music (which indicates that the show was over) and a few people started walking out. Apparently there was some sort of miscommunication as the band returned for a four-track encore: "Fog Machine," "Euphoria," "Foolish Person," and "Peacock and Wing."

The Front Bottoms are currently on tour with Say Anything. With the recent tour, singer/guitarist Brian Sella mentioned that they are releasing a new six-track EP because they are songs people were asking for. Give the people what they want, so the Rose EP was released last month via Bar/None Records.

"These are the songs that people ask for when we’re on tour, they're songs that we've either played live at shows or had kicking around that we couldn't let go of," said Sella.

A student of Television's Richard Lloyd, guitarist Chris Forsyth creates his own brand music that he coins "Cosmic Americana."

Last year Forsyth released the Solar Motel LP, a four part psychedelic opus ... which you can hear live with his so-called The Solar Motel Band (members of War on Drugs and Spacin').

Remember how I said the F&O were finishing up their new LP earlier this year? It finally came out earlier this September on Mexican Summer and it is called Long Slow Dance. Although the band wrapped up their September gigs, it would seem that they are returning back on the road in November for part two of their support for Long Slow Dance. See tour information below. The new album is said to be a "weird folk" rock album, but as Pitchfork puts it, "a record for blissfully happy nights." Of course, Pitchfork also the one that is classifying Fresh & Onlys as part of the "new garage rock" movement, along with Sic Alps, Ty Segall, and Kelley Stoltz. The key thing that all these bands have in common is that they're based out of the San Francisco area… must be something in the water. Two things:

1. When I see "fresh" and "o", I just think of "fresh onions", so for a while, I had mental images of onions when I think of The Fresh & Onlys, a band out of my home state of California. Legend has it that the band was formed because singer/songwriter Tim Cohen wanted to write a song called "Be My Hooker".

2. The band have just announced their 2010 Spring tour dates. This should be fun for all, as listening to their self-titled debut album on Castle Face Records, they sound so raw and garagey that sometime I think they don't care if their guitars are out of tune.

I'm not going to lie, but their self-titled album isn't going to win any awards for production, the bass sounds trembling loud and vocals sounds like it's coming from a damp, hollow basement. I suppose that's the kind of DIY production that fans will find attractive, but listening to it on monitor headphones can be unbearable.

Among the things I found that I liked are whenever I hear the non-traditional rock & roll instruments, like perhaps a tambourine ("Shattered Moon") or harmonica ("Nuclear Disaster"). My easily favorite song is "Peacock And Wing", simply because there's a great melody and a faint duet with (I think) Heidi Alexander. Also, I believe this is the song that the band name comes from:

You should really be my fresh and only.
You'd have a smile on your face that I can always see only.
Lay with me on my bed and roses.
You'd have a smile on your face that I can only see only.

The album was released last July, and with a blink of an eye, and two months later, their second album, Grey-Eyed Girls was released on Woodsist Records. That's incredibly fast, they're no Elastica or Stone Roses, for sure. I don't have their second album for comparison, but I suspect, it's more or less garage rock... especially if the recordings were done in a span of a few months.
