Portland's Greyday Records is releasing a few albums last Tuesday (July 19th), including Jesus Wept LP from The Piney Gir Country Roadshow and a three-disc charity album called Live From Nowhere Near You: Vol 2.
Live From Nowhere Near You: Vol 2 will benefit the homeless and street youth programs at Outside In, you can preview the 60+ tracks at undertheradarmag.com.
Bands included on this compilation reads like a who's who of alt-country and alt-rock, including Bright Eyes, Modest Mouse, Elliot Smith, Daniel Johnston, The Strokes, Wilco, James Mercer, Joe Purdy, Eddie Vedder, Corin Tucker, The Ettes, Spoon, The Helio Sequence, The Dandy Warhols, The Presidents of the United States of America, Mike Watt, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, and more. All tracks, according to the press release, were previously unreleased.

DIR EN GREY

Dir En Grey will release their 8th studio album called Dum Spiro Spero on August 2nd, 2011, via The End Records. What? You've never heard of them either?
Dir En Grey is a Japanese metal band from the late 90s, and by all accounts of looking at their various live photos, the band looks amazing live.
Details of the new album is that it will come in a variety of packages, but the ultimate fan package is the Limited Edition Bundle (includes deluxe CD, Double LP, digital, exclusive T-Shirt, and autographed poster) for a very reasonable pre-order price of $40.
If you saw "Saw 3D", you may have heard a track from Dum Spiro Spero called "Hageshisa To, Kono Mune No Naka De Karamitsuita Shakunetsu No Yami". Admittedly, I'm not a fan of the later Saw movies, so I am not sure if it was featured in the film, but it's listed on the official soundtrack.
VANDAVEER
vandaveer.net
Vandaveer is a folk band, currently based in Washington, DC. It looks like, the band is mostly Mark Charles Heidinger and Rose Guerin (who you can hear singing backup their songs, like "The Nature Of Our Kind" and "Spite"). I am assuming when they play live, they have a rotating cast of musicians, as listed on their Facebook page, "a host of hooligans, including but not limited to Duane Lundy, Justin Craig & Robby Cosenza."
When not doing Vandaveer, the two part of the Federal Reserve Collective group of folky musicians. Good luck on looking them up on Google.
Vandaveer's album, Dig Down Deep, released last April 26th, 2011, via Supply & Demand Music, and the latest single is called "The Great Gray". The video (can be seen on youtube) is in HD and is directed by Loic Guilpain.
The video actually reminds me of the novel-turned-film, "The Road", which shows a very bleak world.
IDEAFESTIVAL

This has little or nothing to do with music, but I do like the Star Trek & MacGyver... so I'll just quickly mention this festival here. This IdeaFestival (IF) is about getting people together and explorer new and exciting ideas.
This year's festival will take place from Sept. 21-24, 2011, at the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts, and will feature more than 40 speakers, some are highlighted below:

This year's festival will take place from Sept. 21-24, 2011, at the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts, and will feature more than 40 speakers, some are highlighted below:
* Aneesh Chopra, the United States Chief Technology Officer and assistant to the President. Chopra will discuss how the U.S. can build on its cultural assets of creativity, new ideas, entrepreneurship and relentless innovation to enhance its competitive position in the global marketplace.
* Aubrey de Grey, a scientist and editor-in-chief of the journal Rejuvenation Science and co-author of the 2007 book Ending Aging. His ideas challenge the most basic assumption that aging is inevitable. * Elizabeth Scharpf, founder of the global Sustainable Health Enterprises (SHE), who developed a seemingly simple, but significant design innovation involving banana leaves that is profoundly improving the lives of young women around the world.
* Physicist and author Leonard Mlodinow, who will explore the extent to which randomness, chance and probability influence and shape our work and everyday lives. Mlodinow was a writer for the television series MacGyver and Star Trek: The Next Generation and co-author with Stephen Hawking of the recent best-seller The Grand Design.
* Philosopher and democracy advocate Chris Phillips, who will lead the IF audience through a timely and provocative discussion of democracy, framed in large part around Jeffersonian ideas of freedom and liberty.
