Supergroup The Baseball Project (featuring R.E.M.’s Peter Buck and Mike Mills, The Minus 5’s Scott McCaughey, Hazel Motes’ Linda Pitmon, and Dream Syndicate’s Steve Wynn) with a double play set at the Turf Club on Saturday night.
The show was sold out and there was no opening band. The venue was incredibly full, and personally speaking, they could play a bigger venue to accommodate for all their fans (especially in the Minneapolis/St Paul area where they have a big following).
It’s been a decade since we last saw Baseball Project in Aug 2014, so it was really nice to see these guys again. Ten years ago, we wrote, “On this new game, McCaughey mentioned that they were trying to do more obscure plays, trying to play more songs than "just straight baseball songs." Immediately, Mills chimed in, "as opposed to gay baseball songs?" Although McCaughey and Wynn does the majority of the singing, everyone in the band had their chance to bat, including Mills taking lead on "To The Veterans Committee" and drummer Pitmon on "Harvey Haddix", the latter experienced a harmonica malfunction.”
The last time the band went on tour, post-pandemic in 2023, they didn’t stop in the area, band leader Steve Wynn explained at the Saturday night show, “We did a run of dates, but couldn’t fit in the Twin Cities…” but they made sure Minneapolis/St Paul was one of their 2024 stops.
The band played two sets, the first was their standard Grand Salami Time set, and the second was looser with some old favorites and oddities.
What made the Turf Club show on Saturday night so special was that Zuzu’s Petals was re-united to pay tribute and honor Laurie Lindeen, who passed away on July 1, 2024.
What a home run, as Linda Pitmon stepped out from her drum kit and with special guest Coleen Elwood, sang a Zuzu’s Petals song, “How Long,” with Mike Mills doing the bass and Steve Wynn “nailing that guitar solo.” There will never be another moment like this. Rest in peace, Laurie Lindeen.
