I was a little too young to see Bratmobile when they started in the early 90s with Bikini Kill and Team Dresch, but I eventually caught them when they reformed and went out on tour with the Donnas in 2001. And the best part? It was completely free!
Opening up the all-ages show was local Selby Tigers, who had a girl singer. I may have missed the band, on account that they started super early (at 5:30 pm), so I really don't have any memory of seeing the band. The St Paul-based band broke up in 2003, but I did manage to later see one of the band member (Nate Grumdahl) in another band called The Bombay Sweets, some years later. Singer Arzu is currently in Pink Mink.
I was primarily at the Donnas show for Bratmobile. Again, as I have said I was too young to have seen them for the first part of their career, so I was super excited to see them finally. I owned all of Bratmobile's EPs and albums at the time, so I was really ready to see them in Minneapolis. I wish I had taken notes or had access to their setlist, but I'm going to hazard a guess that they played songs from Ladies, Women and Girls, including my favorite "Cheap Trick Record". They sounded just like on their record, so it was just as how I would imagine them live.
As for the Donnas, they already had three other albums, so these girls were already rock n roll professional by the time they turned 21 with The Donnas Turn 21 album that same year. The girls were a lot of fun to watch and I want to say all four of them were on stage.
A few years ago, I thought I read that they broke up, but looking over Wikipedia, that once they fulfill their major label with Bitchin', in 2007, that they've parted ways. Apparently The Donnas is working on an eight studio album.
PS, Bratmobile's singer Allison Wolfe recently (December 2013) appeared on The Fogelnest Files to talk about all-things Bratmobile and Riot Grrrls. Wolfe is currently in a Washington, DC, band called Partyline.
