Simon Green, or better known as Bonobo, returns to touring, in support of his new album Fragments (Ninja Tune).

We saw Bonobo in at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles in Sept 2017 and said, “Simon Green a.k.a. Bonobo’s latest album Migration came out last January to rave reviews. The sound has an overall indigenous feel, a lullaby and a dance party all wrapped into one. Bonobo hit the stage, front and center with his synthesizers. He was surrounded by a strings section, trombones, drummer and guitarist. Our beautiful guest act for the night was the lovely British singer Szjerdene, who has been touring with Bonobo for years enhancing the already brilliant performance with her soulful and brazen vocals. After Green discovered Szjerdene, and their sounds were a match, the birthing of musical collaboration began.”

Our favorite Vietnamese singer and songwriter Thao (formerly of Thao & The Get Down Stay Down) will be on a headlining tour of North America, beginning with the Fine Line Music Café in Minneapolis on March 16th.

Thao & The Get Down Stay Down released Temple - Deluxe Edition via Ribbon Music in 2021. The LP is a digital deluxe version of her latest album, 2020’s Temple and features acoustic and string arrangement versions of “How Could I,” “Marauders,” “Marrow,” and “Temple.”

Support from Becca Mancari and Why Bonnie for the first half of the tour, and Black Belt Eagle Scout and Quinn Christopherson for the second half.

Portland’s rock band Modest Mouse just headlined the Armory in Minneapolis on Sunday, August 22nd, in support of their seventh album The Golden Casket.

Opening the show was Pennsylvania’s The Districts. The band was formed while all the members were still in high school.

We saw the band in Oct 2015 when they were touring for their album A Flourish and a Spoil (Fat Possum). At the time, the band was hot, as we wrote, “Their sophomore record has been getting a lot of buzz with indie fans, especially after peaking at #7 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart and #28 on the Top Independent Albums chart.”

After over a year or so not being able to play live, because of the pandemic, The Districts are just simply happy to be back live concerts. Singer Rob Grote, quickly commented after their first song, “Man, it’s been a while. Have you guys been to a show since… this (indicating the virus) went down?” The someone in the audience took the opportunity to reply with, “Freebird!”

The Districts ended their brief 30-min set with “Cheap Regrets”.

This was possibly Modest Mouse headlining their biggest venue yet, the Armory. The Armory was originally built for the Minnesota National Guard in 1935. Things changed over time, and eventually it was converted to a concert venue, at the end of January 2018. You can read more about the 8,400-person capacity venue in our Super Bowl 2018 coverage, “This historic venue built originally in the 1930s and that was once home to Minneapolis Lakers and site of Prince’s ‘1999’ music video, has been recently refurbished into a modern entertainment complex, and located nearby the stadium, will be the concert epicenter, hosting the most high-profile shows.” (And yes, we covered the very first Armory show on Feb 1, 2018).

Audience

So, yes, the venue is massive. Even Modest Mouse singer Isaac Brock had to admit, “It’s bigger inside than it is outside!”. While the majority of diehard Modest Moust fans were packed on the dancefloor and close the stage, but there were plenty of premium options, like upper floor booths, etc.

As previously mentioned, we’ve been big fans of Modest Mouse since they hired The Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr to write some of their songs… which they were happy to play the well-received hit song “Dashboard” as one of their songs on their encore.

If you follow Modest Mouse, you’ll know that they play a completely different set list night after night. This showcase the band’s talent and ability to change songs on the fly.

Since the tour is for their new album, The Golden Casket, they sprinkled some of the new songs (“F**k Your Acid Trip”, “The Sun Hasn’t Left”, “Never F**k a Spider on the Fly”, “We Are Between”, “We’re Lucky”, “Back to the Middle”) throughout their set.

The Golden Casket is available now on Epic Records.

The first time I ever saw violinist Lindsey Stirling in June 2015, I was blown away by how popular she was. She also handcraft her shows to include set designs, videos, designated dancers, and plenty of nerdy instrumentals. Fans loves her, and her fanbase probably grew one thousand times since I last saw her.

Hot recording duo, Alexander Jean (featuring Mark Ballas and BC Jean), has been asked to open up for Stirling on her “Warmer in the Winter Christmas Tour” tour.

The husband & wife duo has a few #1 on the iTunes’ Singer/Songwriter charts with their debut EP Head High, and with another #1 for debut single ‘Roses and Violets’.

Husband & wife Kris Delmhorst and Jeffrey Foucault will be headlining the Cedar Cultural Center. Their record The Wild came out under Kris Delmhorst’s name, but featured Jeffrey Foucault and members of his band. Although married, the two maintain very different album and touring careers (in fact, Foucault was last seen in Minneapolis on December 2016)… so it’s nice to see that they are co-headlining this current tour.

Alternative/indie band The Districts recently stopped by the Triple Rock Social Club in Minneapolis on Sunday, October 4th, in support of their latest A Flourish and a Spoil (Fat Possum).

Sun Club

Sun Club (not to be confused with Netherland's The Sunclub) came on stage to Kate Bush's "Wuthering Heights," ready to violently and spastically destroy the dance floor. As we have previously written, the band's music styling is both "violent convulsions" and "sexy dancing."

The dance group (featuring Shane McCord, Adam Shane, Mikey Powers, Devin McCord, Kory Johnson) recently signed to ATO Records and was happy to play some new tunes they've written for their upcoming The Dongo Durango album, including sunny song "Summer Feet."

One of the two main singers, Shane McCord, was pretty amazed that some "lovely, lovely, lovely" fans knew their songs and singing along. A number of dancing fans in the front came out early just to see Sun Club.

The Districts (singer Rob Grote, bassist Connor Jacobus, guitarist Pat Cassidy, and drummer Braden Lawrence) took the stage slightly later than advertised, playing "Chlorine" from their latest A Flourish and a Spoil. Their sophomore record has been getting a lot of buzz with indie fans, especially after peaking at #7 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart and #28 on the Top Independent Albums chart.

Setlist

As you can see from their setlist, the majority of tracks were from A Flourish and a Spoil. However, you might not recognize the song "Airplane", as they've indicated that it is a brand new song. This was followed by their set closer (and probably their biggest hit with the fans), "4th & Roebling".

After a few minutes in the back, the band came back on stage to play one last song for the encore, "Young Blood".

Blitzen Trapper will be taking over the First Avenue main room on Sunday, October 4th and you will definitely want to be there. I have never been able to see these guys but am definitely excited! These guys are a five piece country/folk band from Portland, Oregon. With eight studio albums under their belt, these guys are sure to bring the house down with their quirky sound. I'm not typically a country fan but there's something about these guys that keeps you wanting more.

Blitzen Trapper's latest All Across This Land will land on October 2 via Vagrant Records.

Opening up will be The Domestics, a five piece indie folk-rock group from Portland, Oregon. They are new to the scene but have already been turning heads. They will be out supporting their self-titled debut album coming out via Tender Loving Empire records. These guys were named an "artist to watch" by Spin for a reason!

You may have remembered American singer-songwriter Jackie Greene as one of the band members in the final lineup for The Black Crowes before they broke up in January 2015.

Jackie Greene is currently on tour in support of his new album Back to Birth (his seventh album!), which landed #5 on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart, #43 on the Rock chart, and #10 on the Folk chart when it debut earlier in August.

The record was produced by Los Lobos member Steve Berlin, the album was recorded at Portland’s Supernatural Sound. The 11-song set features Paul Rigby (guitar, mandolin, pedal steel guitar); Damian Erskine (bass); Reinhardt Melz (drums); Jason Crosby (violin, string arrangements) with Greene stretching out on a number of instruments including guitar, piano, organ and drums.

Special guest Nashville's Derik Hultquist will open the show.
