Seattle’s The Cave Singers are back on tour in support of their fifth LP Banshee, which was first crowd-funded via IndieGoGo then released by JagJaguwar and their 2016 tour began in Minneapolis, with an hour-long set at the 7th St Entry.

The band is prepping a full-length after a few EPs and songs like ‘Same Sun’ echo a laid-back ‘70s sound while touching on post-grunge and modern alt-country earmarks. The two singers keep things vocally interesting and previously opening for bands like Spoon and Drive-By Truckers, should give you an idea of their complimentary sound.
Starting strong and from near the end of the new record, Cave Singers unassumingly began with ‘Christmas Night’, the next to last track from Banshee then dialed it back seemlessly to a track from 2011’s No Witch.
Pete Quirk
|
Quirk’s vocals anchor the band, a fuzzy, yelping throwback that takes the country crooning of old and mixes in a modern journeyman point of view, to create a vocal style which is recognizable, yet very unique. The band is no doubt proud of the new record, with almost half the set covering the new record on this, their first night of the tour.
Quirk didn’t say anything until after four songs in, responding for yells to play Fargo at some point, which he said “we’re considering, … starting now”, if only to quell the inquiry.
Despite being the inaugural night, the band seemed very focused while playing, yet very relaxed in-between, with Quirk casually relating a story of having to explain Grand Theft Auto to a mother whose child was immersed in the game, on the plane ride in.

The two-song encore started somewhat light and primitive with ‘Leap’ then jumped into overdrive with Fudesco’s driving riff on ‘Black Leaf’, an electric way to end their first night of the tour.
Managing fourteen songs in sixty minutes, Cave Singers gave us the passenger seat for a night ride down a deserted stretch of highway, destination unknown, never looking back. The banshee is alive in the night.
