We caught the Band Perry in Oct 2016 and wrote, “After a break, lights dimmed, and the jangles of a mandolin against a big bass drum beat introduced The Band Perry and opening song, ‘Better Dig Two’. The band is now signed to Interscope Records/UMG Mercury Nashville and took time out from putting the finishing touches on their follow up to 2013’s Pioneer, to head out for a handful of dates and road test some of the new singles released. The siblings (Kimberly Perry; Neil Perry; and Reid Perry) are no strangers to the stage (revealing they just celebrated their eighteenth year of playing live the week before) and has melded a polished hybrid of country-pop into several hit singles, presenting them in a well-paced and varied eighty-minute headlining performance.”

Madeline Merlo to open. The singer was the winner of NBC’s Songland Season 2 and is a two-times CCMA winning vocalist.

There is a local show, coming up at the end of the month at the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis.

Triple bands on the bill:

Maria and the Coins recently released their third album, Forward.

The group, Maria Coyne (vocals), Nick Baker (guitar), Zaq Baker (keys) and Sheldon Way (drums) met while students at St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN, and formed in 2014 after one of Coyne’s original songs was chosen to be recorded for a compilation CD of St. Olaf artists. The band opened for Betty Who, Jeremy Messersmith, and others. Adam Maurer was added as bassist in 2018.

Faith Boblett named “Best New Band of 2018” by First Avenue in Jan 2019. The singer/songwriter’s third LP, take care, was released in October 2020.

Dark Bunny is the dream-pop/shoegaze-inspired project, which started in early 2020 by Emily Youel. Currently they are a four-piece band comprised of Youel (vocals/guitar/synth), Christian Wheeler (lead guitar), Emma Withers (drums), and Karl Schutzle (bass). Their self-titled debut album came out in Feb 2022.

English rock group The Psychedelic Furs is back with their latest album, Made of Rain. The tour will run through St Paul, at the Palace Theatre this July 30th.

We saw the band in Apr 2017 and wrote, “The Furs’ second half of the set picked up with some of their biggest hits, including ‘Love My Way’ and set closer ‘Pretty in Pink’. Half the audience were singing along to the latter song.”

Impossible to Google, X, will open. X appeared on Rock the Garden 2019, and we said, “If you asked me, all the older fans were very eager to have Los Angeles’ X back in town. As we previously mentioned, the band’s name is impossible to search for in the Google-age. Still, the first wave punk band, featuring original members of vocalist Exene Cervenka, vocalist/bassist John Doe, guitarist Billy Zoom and drummer D. J. Bonebrake, proudly played through their decade plus of music.”

We saw RiGBY in May 2022 and said, “If you’re a fan of Bikini Kill or any 90s riot grrl bands (like we are), you’ll find a lot to like in RiGBY.”

The girls are celebrating their national tour with a homecoming gig at the 7th Street Entry on the last day of July.

Yoshitaka Amano (20 Nov 1999)

The artwork they used for their poster is Terra from Final Fantasy. Not many people know that Japanese artist and designer Yoshitaka Amano was one of the co-designer behind all the early Final Fantasy character costumes and designs… he has a very unique art style. I attended a book signing for Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman: The Dream Hunters in 1999 at Dreamhaven Books. He was supposed to just sign, but instead, he drew on all the books we purchased. The more I thought about it, especially since Amano is in his 70s, the more I am thankful to own this original artwork.

New York’s brother/sister act Lawrence (not to be confused with Lawrence, Kansas), got an upgrade in venue from the smaller Amsterdam Bar & Hall in St Paul, to the big mainroom of First Avenue this April 8th.

The sibling’s new single “Don’t Lost Sight” is currently featured in the Microsoft Global Ad running for the next six months.

We first talked about the band in July 2016 and said, “Don’t let the young ages (22 and 19) fool you, at 6, Clyde was youngest person to be admitted to the Songwriters' Guild of America for his film composition on Miss Congeniality (2000), and Gracie has performed on Broadway in Neil Simon’s Brighton Beach Memoirs and The Sitter (2011), etc.”

Music-loving Casino goers were treated to a veritable jackpot of country and pop colliding as sibling group The Band Perry took to the stage at a packed Mystic Lake Showroom.

The evening began with a short set from Caitlyn Smith, a Cannon Falls, MN native who currently splits her time between locally and in Nashville, and has up to now, primarily been known as a songwriter.  But Smith has decided to embark out on her own career, and was in promotion of newest EP, Starfire, released in July on Skylark Records, which will lead to a full album in the new year.

Though she may be a new-ish performing artist, the storytelling skills of her previous songwriting (including for the likes of Garth Brooks, Rascal Flatts, and Jason Aldean) and on her own songs like ‘Do You Think About Me’ have served her well. 

 A note about the venue—the Mystic Lake Showroom is a generally well run place with exemplary sound since their renovations several years ago, with comfortable seating and good sight lines.  If you can bear the drive out to the western suburbs and find your way to the back of the casino, amidst a haze of cigarette smoke and barrage of lights and sounds from all the machines, it’s a trip worth taking.

After a break, lights dimmed, and the jangles of a mandolin against a big bass drum beat introduced The Band Perry and opening song, ‘Better Dig Two’.  The band is now signed to Interscope Records/UMG Mercury Nashville and took time out from putting the finishing touches on their follow up to 2013’s Pioneer, to head out for a handful of dates and road test some of the new singles released. 

The siblings (Kimberly Perry; Neil Perry; and Reid Perry) are no strangers to the stage (revealing they just celebrated their eighteenth year of playing live the week before) and has melded a polished hybrid of country-pop into several hit singles, presenting them in a well-paced and varied eighty-minute headlining performance.

“The crazier, the wilder, the louder… the better!” Kimberly mentioned were the only rules, this Saturday night, as the group moved from 2010’s ‘All Your Life’ from their debut album, into a more recent Justin Bieber cover, which everyone younger in the crowd, instantly recognized. 

The mid-set medley really showed their pop influences, with a mash-up of a Eurythmics ‘80s classic and two more recent radio hits, with brother Neil jumping around in his black tank top and b-boy cap, leaping from side to side, to incite the crowd. 

The new gospel-influenced ‘In It Together’ built into an anthem of unity (perfect timing given the current political climate) and was followed by the band’s initial radio song that would top the Billboard charts, 2010’s ‘If I Die Young’, which is less about being morbid and more about living in the moment. 

The new ‘Comeback Kid’ was described by Kimberly as their “most transparent lyrics of any song” and rising above the adversities they’ve faced over the last year, while the also-new ‘Stay in the Dark’ had a toe-tapping beat and clap-a-long rhythm to it. 

“We’ll always forever do this song” Kimberly said, during the middle of their cover of Queen’s ‘Fat Bottom Girls’ for two reasons—her love of Freddie Mercury and belief that the song (though created before she was alive) is a personal anthem of sorts for her, and closed their main set with a punch. 

The three song encore began with the new and unabashedly pop ‘Best One Yet’ which featured doo-wop like background vocals, followed by the catchy ‘Live Forever’, the first single on what was supposed to be their third full-length before the band parted ways with their former label (and it happened to be Team USA’s official song for the summer games). 

‘DONE’ was the perfect ending for the evening, both in terms of message that it was over, and in terms of playing it with intensity; the lyrics of which, gave Kimberly a chance to display some sassy attitude to help interpret them. 

The crossover from country to pop is much more blurred than it used to be and given the path that someone like Taylor Swift has proven, conquering both worlds while broadening your overall fan base is more than possible. 

With the hybrid sound and overall likeability that The Band Perry has, it seems like they may be next in line for that genre-crossing, jackpot level of success.

Hot off the new single ‘Comeback Kid’, the Grammy Award-winning trio The Band Perry (Kimberly Perry, Neil Perry and Reid Perry) will be playing at the Mystic Lake Casino this Saturday, October 29th. It’s a bit of a drive, but may be worth the trouble to see them at this nice venue.

The sibling also recently announced they will be the entertainment at the Ford EcoBoost 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway on November 20, 2016.

Homestead-Miami Speedway President Matthew Becherer is a big fan: “We are thrilled to have The Band Perry performing in what will be an exciting day at Homestead-Miami Speedway, which will be capped off with the Ford EcoBoost 400 championship race on Sunday. The Band Perry has become a household name in country music, and having them kick off the Sprint Cup Series championship race with a pre-race concert will be an electrifying experience for NASCAR and all of our fans. We can't wait to see the show they put on in November.”

Memphis’ Lucero is back at First Avenue this Saturday, October 29th.

The last time the band was at First Avenue in October 2015, we wrote, “When I tell people that Lucero is one of my favorite bands of all time, it takes them a second. I like loud, heavy music. The more yelling and screaming, the better. Lucero is anything but heavy. Ben Nichols, the lead singer, does anything but scream and yell. Nope, there was no angry music last night. It was more full of love ballads and upbeat country songs about whiskey. It was perfect.”

This North Mississippi-born Cory Branan will open. Rolling Stone Country loves this guy, calling his live shows, “a must see.” We previously mentioned that Branan was described as “too punk for country, too country for punk”.

Branan’s new album The No-Hit Wonder is described as both a celebratory anthem of the world-weary, undefeated underdogs of the world, and a coming to terms with the cards life has dealt you.

Neon Indian is back in Minneapolis, this time at Fine Line Music Café in downtown Minneapolis (the show is presented by First Avenue).

We saw the band in October 2015 and wrote, “After the show people stuck around and Alan was enthusiastic to meet his fans, and take all the photographs that were requested, and sign all the merchandise. We spoke to him in Spanish and found out he’s originally from Monterrey, Mexico. If the “Night School” is heading your way, I highly recommend you check it out. NME buzz band Palma Violets just announced their Christmas single "Last Christmas On Planet Earth," which is out now via Rough Trade Records.

The single is backed up by Palma's favorite "All the Garden Birds" (sung by the Rhythm Studio Kids Choir) and is available on Limited 7" & digital.

According to the press release, they suggest you keep an eye on their website (palmaviolets.co.uk) for "a special Alternative Advent calendar", featuring daily covers, poetry, and other miscellaneous holiday specials from the band.

Also, worth noting is that Palma Violets will be performing on Call This Number. Call This Number is the brain child of Steve Mackey (Pulp), Jeannette Lee (Rough Trade) & Douglas Hart (ex Jesus and Mary Chain). The concept involves a unique performance broadcast just once at a set time from an online link provided on the day of the show.

Australia's The Party Pirates will be releasing their new Christmas single called "The Christmas Rock" on Friday, December 4th.

The kids band (featuring Captain Black, Captain Blue, Captain Red, and Pirate Pinky) is known for their lively high-energy concerts. They all dress up as pirates in their respective colors - with pink being the obvious lone girl in the group. Reminds me of a much friendly/family version of Japanese band Peelander-Z.

One of the most famous female-fronted bands from the 90s is Garbage, lead by Scottish singer Shirley Manson. I first discovered her through a short-lived band called Angelfish, which you can read about here.

Anyway, after their European tour cancellation in 2005, we thought we'd seen the end of Garbage. The band took a break and came back five years ago to release Absolute Garbage. Around this time, Shirley Manson became a fulltime cast member in great "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" series, so there wasn't a whole lot of touring or promotion around this time.

Luckily, last year, the band announced a new record called Not Your Kind of People and traditional tour dates! The band will be stopping by Minneapolis' Mill City Nights this Friday. If it all works out, we'll be covering them.

In other Garbage news, look for the band with Screaming Females will be releasing a special Record Store Day 2013 limited 10" on April 20th, featuring a cover of Patti Smith's "Because the Night" and two other tracks, "Automatic Systematic Habit Costa Cadeu Remix" (remixed by Beatport contest winner Konstantin Kazhev) and an original song called "Love Like Suicide".

Shirley Manson explains the teamup with Screaming Females: "This year we once again wanted to release something special in celebration of Record Store Day 2013. We decided to record the duet that we had been performing on tour with the Screaming Females towards the end of 2012. The SF flew across country from New Jersey to Los Angeles so we could record it all together at EastWest Studio 1 in Hollywood ; 2 drum kits, 2 bass rigs, 2 guitars, 2 microphones and 1 piano. No mean feat…. The song? A cover of Patti Smith’s “Because the Night”. Why? Because it’s awesome."

I saw this trio Dragonette last year and was rather impressed with this Canadian female-fronted electro-pop band.

It would seem that the Juno-award-winning band is co-headlining a tour with Australia's The Presets. Tour is kicking off in May, look for me to be dancing at First Avenue on May 15th.

Dragonette's latest album, Bodyparts, is out now on Universal Music Canada.

Anyway, if you were wondering this is a Nashville sibling trio with Kimberly Perry on vocals and guitar and her two brothers Reid Perry on bass and Neil Perry on drums.

The band is currently in the middle of a tour and they stopped by their hometown of Greeneville recently to perform in front of 25,000 fans! The autograph line was described as "stretched nearly a mile down Main Street." Yes, they are white hot with Pioneer hitting #1 iTunes Country chart.

Neil Perry commented on the event, "We are so humbled by the show of support from our hometown, as well as our fans that traveled so many miles - and our neighbors just down the street - to see the show! We had a great time signing CDs for everyone who braved the crisp night air waiting to meet us and say hello. And to have Governor Haslam recognize us as we came home, what an incredible honor."

THE Y AXES facebook.com The Y Axes a female-fronted indie pop/synth rock quintet from San Francisco. They self-proclaimed themselves as "a couple scientists and tech geeks". Their new EP, Moon Rock, came out last month (March 20th). They wrote that their soundcloud is free, but it is not. Instead, you might have to go their bandcamp or look to amazon.com.
