The Cult is back, this time they are bringing Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Zola Jesus on tour with them, as part of their “We Own the Night” tour.

We last saw The Cult in Aug 2013 and wrote, “As expected, The Cult played their Electric album in its entirety - starting off with the sing-along chorus of "Wild Flower". The great energy between the two original two original band members, singer Ian Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy is great to watch - that is until Astbury seem visibly and vocally upset at the chatters in front and then his mic not carrying his vocals. It was all resolved, but for a moment, you thought he was going to smash his mic out of anger.”

We last saw Black Rebel Motorcycle Club in Feb 2018 and said, “Out of the darkness and fog, there is still light… and noise, as again evidenced by the sonic barrage that is still Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, continuing to bring their unapologetic blend of no-holds rock to audiences everywhere after two decades.”

We last saw Zola Jesus in Feb 2015 and mentioned, “A darker version of Florence and the Machine is the typical quick to judge label on Zola Jesus. There is so much variety and dynamic to her songs no one should be quick to make comparisons because she is so unique. Her voice carries strong to an almost London Grammar-type level but has this obscure electronic trance that hits out of nowhere along with and incredible brass sound from the trombone.”

Zola Jesus’ forthcoming album Arkhon is due for release on June 24th via Sacred Bones Records.

This The Airborne Toxic Event Minneapolis show was originally scheduled in 16 April 2022… but due to COVID, the band had to reschedule the show to July 8th.

Luckily, we did catch the band in Kansas City, in March 2022 and wrote, “Kansas City had not seen The Airborne Toxic Event live since 2015 (and for us even longer- a 2013 show in Minneapolis), though the pandemic has had a funny way of making things seem not as long ago. So, with everyone in the room looking forward to their 110-minute headlining set, they did not disappoint the many still-loyal fans, singing along to their every lyric.”

Once again, Mondo Cozmo set to open.

Los Angeles’ Chicano Batman is out on tour in support of Invisible People… the album that came out during the pandemic. The record was unanimous praise from Pitchfork, NPR, Rolling Stone, The LA Times, The Fader, and many more.

Rudy De Anda to open. Rudy De Anda’s latest single, “Cascading” (available on Karma Chief Records), is a modern take on mid-1970s Brazilian soul.

Kansas City turned into “Hollywood Park” for the night, as LA-band The Airborne Toxic Event returned to the area to play downtown at The Truman.

Philly-raised, LA-based singer-songwriter Joshua Ostrander, akaMondo Cozmo, opened the evening with a forty minute set of his “chorus-heavy folk-rock”, in support of upcoming third album, This is for the Barbarians(on Last Gang Records), out on April 8^th (also his birthday and when they happen to be playing his hometown) though >shhh<, attendees at the merch booth might have had an early chance at it.

The album is named in honor of a group of of 80’s Bay Area writers who would gather at a Cafe Barbar and talk about the world and, recorded in the mountains during the pandemic, it deals with its isolation and getting older, among other themes. “Good evening everyone, I hope this finds you well” were Ostrander’s first words sung on stage, initial lines from the set and new album-opening single, “Electrify My Love”.

“I’d even play a barbecue!” Ostrander exclaimed, visibly happy that he and his band were back on the road after two years away. While some songs lean toward a Springsteen influence, the new “Meant for Livin’” sounded more Dylan-esque with its jangling guitars and rapid socially-conscious verses.

2017’s “Shine” is their biggest hit to date, still present on the radio, and assuring us that “everything will be alright, if you let it go”. “Black Cadillac” featured still very-in-the-moment political lyrics and the set ended with a revved-up, bar band version of a ‘90’s classic by The Verve.

Kansas City had not seen The Airborne Toxic Event live since 2015 (and for us even longer- a 2013 show in Minneapolis), though the pandemic has had a funny way of making things seem not as long ago. So, with everyone in the room looking forward to their 110-minute headlining set, they did not disappoint the many still-loyal fans, singing along to their every lyric.

The latest record is 2020’s Hollywood Park (on Rounder Records), released in tandem with bandleader Mikel Jollett’s memoir of the same name, and features a marked change in Jollett’s storytelling lyrics- turning them very personally upon himself, instead of introducing us to third-party characters, as in most previous songs. The somber “Brother How Was the War?” even detailed a letter sent by Jollett’s incarcerated father to his brother, sent to Vietnam to fight.

Fans were ecstatic to hear the new “Faithless”, a positive-sounding single released just weeks ago, that encourages those to believe in something, even when the world is telling you everything otherwise.

Though followers were heartbroken when original violinist/keyboardist Anna Bulbrook left the group in 2019, current touring replacement Mimi Peschet more than ably filled the role, often spinning with energy and fervor while playing her violin. The string presence in their songs often gives them an additional Old World sophistication, unique amongst their alt-rock peers.

Jollett lyrically reminisced on “The Place We Meet…” as his eight-year old self witnessed the tearing down of Hollywood Park, which then segued into 2008’s “Wishing Well’ from their breakthrough debut album. The energetic back-to-back punch of “Gasoline” and “Changing” brought the crowd alive and they even played “Hell and Back”, culled from the 2013 Dallas Buyers Club film soundtrack.

2008’s “Sometime Around Midnight” remains their biggest hit, and still echoes with an urgency- a rare musical synthesis of an-entire-movie-in-a-single-song that was true lightning in a bottle, and fans clapped along to “Innocence” to end the main set.

Turns out the show was only getting really started, as the band would return for a six-song encore, complete with cover medley. Starting slow and acoustic, things picked back up with 2008’s “Does This Mean You’re Moving On?” and would end with another first album song, “Missy” which happened to bookend a chugging cover medley of Jesus and Mary Chain and Johnny Cash hits.

After more than fifteen years together as a band, The Airborne Toxic Event still keeps pushing the boundaries of their own musical identity and Mikel Jollett’s veering into more personal lyrics and themes seems to be satisfying, both to he and the band as well as the fans that have continued to support them for almost two decades.

Ok, it’s officially started--

Between the backlog of postponed dates and bands feeling safe enough to head back on the road, there are several nights this coming week that you will want to be in two (or more) places at once; and instead, will have to pick the show you want to see the most.

Area sports fans are somewhat upset that Tyreek Hill is now a member of the Miami Dolphins, so find some happy instead, at one of these great live concerts coming to the area.

Like everyone else, we’ve been talking about and anticipating this Norwegian’s live tour for the last two years. The KC show (like most on the tour) is long sold out, though there might be a slim possibility of last-minute tix released. The singer-songwriter (aka Marie Ulven) was buzzworthy before releasing her debut album, If I Could Make It Go Quiet, last April with hit single, “Serotonin” still all over the radio.

Arrive early for celebrated UK singer-songwriter Holly Humberstone, whose major label EP, The Walls Are Way Too Thin, was released in November. She recently won the Brits Rising Star Award and will join up as support for Olivia Rodrigo following this run, so this is a chance to see her close up and early on.

Bristol, UK country soul singer Yola is just getting started, though has already been nominated for four Grammy Awards in 2020, with two additional nominations this year, and was mentored by Black Keys front man Dan Auerbach. Her second album, Stand for Myself(produced by Auerbach) came out last summer and she played a sold-out Madison Square Garden last fall, in support of Chris Stapleton.

Opener Jac Ross leans a little more R&B, and released his cover of Sam Cooke’s “A Change is Gonna Come” last month.

Hippo Campus w/ Ginger Root Arvest Bank Theatre at the Midland. $26-$28

They’ve been Twin Cities’ favorites for years, and it’s only more recently than the rest of the country is falling in love with this peppy indie-pop/rock band. We’ve written about them for almost a decade, and first saw them at a local festival in 2015 when they’d already established a strong area following.

The band has been prolific during the pandemic, releasing the Good Dog, Bad Dream EP in 2021 and new album LP3 came out just last month.

Rittz and Grieves, more, recordBar, $25

This six-act Loud & Clear Tour stop features the Georgia hip-hop headliner, previously signed to Tech N9ne’s Strange Music label, and is in support of last year’s S.O.S., released on his own label.

Grieves is signed to fabled Minneapolis label Rhymesayers Entertainment, though based in Seattle, and had a new album, Canopy, drop last year.

Comedy that’s big enough to fill an entire arena-The Fun Tour is the latest outing from the six-time Grammy-nominated stand-up, actor, producer and author. Gaffigan filmed his last Netflix comedy special, Comedy Monster, at the (much smaller) State Theatre in Minneapolis last fall.

Like many shows, this has been re-scheduled a couple times due to the pandemic.

We previously wrote: Don’t be put off by the seemingly steep door charge to this show, as each ticket also includes a limited edition signed poster and the performance will feature two sets – the first, completely fan-voted and the second curated by the Georgia heavy metal band themselves.

We covered them last in 2016 and latest album is 2019’s Gold & Grey (on Abraxan Hymns Records), which they were previously set to tour with, but after a pandemic delay, are finally getting the chance to. The album is produced by one of our favorites, frequent Flaming Lips collaborator, Dave Fridmann.

The Darkness with The Dead Deads, The Truman. $28.50-$60

Always over the top entertaining, the UK glam rock band still believes a thing called love and is out in support of new album, Motorheart. We caught them live back in 2015 and the band is also (somehow) keeping things family-friendly in this all-ages show.

Florida five-piece indie band Flipturn is named after a swimming maneuver, has a new single, “Playground” out this week, and promises their live show to be a complete and total release of inhibitions, for band and crowd alike.

Witness prog rock history as this longtime band (formed in 1969) is out on their Vinyl Sides Tour. We caught the band live, just days before the pandemic shutdown, and were amazed at their musical dexterity, loyal fan base, and creative longevity.

It gets a bit confusing with two incarnations of the band in existence (the other German-based version known as New Nektar) but we liked what we heard and saw from this lineup, and the band must have enjoyed their reception in Kansas City as well, returning to the area once again.

The Airborne Toxic Event is back in Minneapolis this Sunday... along with Los Angeles synth-pop band In the Valley Below, who will be playing tracks from their album The Belt. Personally, I think In the Valley Below should tour with Death From Above 1979 (who is stopping by Minneapolis on November 24).

As for Airborne Toxic Event, apparently members from that group and The Duke Spirit also have a project called The Bulls - their debut single "Come Unwound" is out now.

The Airborne Toxic Event

Coming on the heels of their digital EP, The Secret, LA-based The Airborne Toxic Event is out on the road soon, in support of their upcoming 3rd full-length, Such Hot Blood, due April 16 on Island Records...…

The Airborne Toxic Event are a bit of an enigma. Blasting out of the gate to national attention in late 2007/early 2008 with the breakout single ‘Sometime Around Midnight’, the Los Angeles-based group never fully held our extended attention, but have recently and ably bounced back into the spotlight with their latest effort, Such Hot Blood (Island Records) and the singles ‘Timeless’ and ‘The Storm’. Their stadium-ready sound has always toed the line between inspired / influenced and indie / mainstream, perhaps making it difficult to embrace one type of audience or the other. But, playing to their largest to-date crowd in the Twin Cities Tuesday night, any comeback effort is being more than well received.

KODALINE

Dublin foursome Kodaline opened the show, promoting their self-titled ep (B-Unique/RCA), completely won the crowd over with their melancholy anthems and soaring choruses (think folk U2/early Coldplay). It didn’t hurt that many thought the Irish lads were also handsome and that they wrote a song specifically for Minneapolis for them to gain fans in a room that prior to their performance, very few had any familiarity with. ‘High Hopes’ and ‘All I Want’ were highlights from a band already playing a bigger sound than the venues they’re currently playing – with the right airplay and a little more stage charisma and maybe bombast, they could become the next The Script as far as popularity in the U.S.—a band to watch.

The Airborne Toxic Event then came out to a set decorated with two gnarled trees framing each side of the back on the stage, similar to the look of their first album cover. Lighting the fire, the band broke into ‘Gasoline’, an energy-filled opener from its debut album that got the crowd moving immediately. Following with ‘Happiness is Overrated’, lead singer Mikel Jollett was up in the balcony singing soon after, while Anna Bulbrook (viola, keyboards) rode on bassist Noah Harmon’s shoulders, tambourine in hand. While musically tight, the overall performance also echo’d a bit of familiarity and calculation about it – from Bulbrook performing on top of a piano to Harmon and guitarist Steven Chen dueling guitar sounds back and forth, the performance seemed more pre-planned than spontaneous, which may have to be the case when staging a 90 min. performance on a large club room tour.

Jollett freely admits being obsessed with death (the band’s name takes from a section of Don DeLillo’s White Noise), but mentioned his view changed recently after several close to him passed away in his pre-song intro to ‘Timeless’, which he dedicated to those lost. Following that with their biggest single, ‘Sometime Around Midnight’ which predictably got the night’s biggest response, Jollett also mentioned his memories of their first trip into the venue, opening for The Fratellis, then desperately selling t-shirts and CDs after.

AIRBORNE TOXIC EVENT

The band ended the main set appropriately with ‘All I Ever Wanted’, which was the title track of their live album, as well as on their 2nd studio album, All At Once. Returning for the encore with the somewhat inexplicable song choices of a cover of The Magnetic Fields’ ‘Book of Love’; the somber lyrics of ‘The Graveyard Near The House’; and ‘Missy’, segued with an All-American medley of 'Ring of Fire / American Girl / Born In The USA'. While energetic, it left some scratching their heads as to whether the band was just trying to interpret some of their favorite songs, celebrate American music, or make the statement that they belonged in that company.

Despite their sometimes inconsistent studio output and without any clearer definition of their identity (maybe for the best at this point), The Airborne Toxic Event does continue to impress live, with their tight hooks and arena-sized sound stretching the boundaries of the smaller places they are playing.

   Helming the boards for TATE's latest is Jacquire King, the three-time Grammy winning producer (Of Monsters and Men, Cold War Kids, Tom Waits, Norah Jones), with the first single ‘Timeless’ already in regular radio rotation everywhere.

   Named via Don DeLillo's 1985 novel White Noise, The Airborne Toxic Event [Mikel Jollett (vocals, guitar, keys), Steven Chen (guitar, keys), Anna Bulbrook (viola, keys, backing vocals), Noah Harmon (bass, backing vocals), Daren Taylor (drums)], have become a touring force, playing almost constantly since the release of their breakout single, "Sometime Around Midnight" in early 2008.

   The band is playing First Avenue’s Mainroom, right after their dual-weekend shows at Coachella, with Dublin quartet Kodaline in tow as openers, so any expectations of a spirited evening of performances, are completely realistic.
