Can you believe it? The Basilica Block Party is back! The event was cancelled from 2020, and attendance was poor in 2021 (understandably still recovering from the pandemic), the block party was put on paused until 2024. However, it won’t be held at the Basilica of St Mary (which is where the event got their name)… it’ll now be held at Boom Island Park. Still, we’re happy to see the music event back, especially since Rock the Garden said goodbye last year.

We last saw Basilica Block Party in July 2018 and wrote, “It wasn’t thought possible, but the weather improved even more, to provide a picture-perfect evening on the second and final day of the Basilica Block Party, The Basilica of Saint Mary in downtown Minneapolis. Once again, ten acts were spread across three stages for each night- the Main Stage (sponsored by Great Clips) located in a back lot behind the building along the highway, a Church Stage (sponsored by Preferred One) out front, and a smaller local stage (sponsored by Star Tribune) . The one downside of having so many bands over a six-hour span is that set times overlap, so it often requires some planning (and maybe a little racing between stages) to catch the acts you want to see most.”

The 26th Annual Ribfest is taking place August 1 to 4 in Mankato, Minnesota.

Gin Blossoms is co-headlining a tour with Toad the Wet Sprocket. Like the big blocks of televisions from the Allison Road music video, nostalgia lives in these two bands with the Gin Blossoms’ first album released more than three decades ago and Toad the Wet Sprocket touring in celebration of the 30th Anniversary of Dulcinea.

We last saw Toad the Wet Sprocket in Sep 2023 at the Fillmore and wrote, “Then it was back to the hits, which made watching the crowd an enjoyable exercise. It’s not often you get to see guys in their sixties sing along to “Whatever I Fear” with a misty look in their eyes. It was fun to see a mom jump up to dance to “All I want” while her teenage son remained seated with chagrin.”

Indie-pop foursome Yam Haus is currently touring with Blue October… However, they’ll be headlining the Palace Theatre in St Paul, at the end of their long stadium-sized support tour.

With their latest single, “body goes”, the band lead singer Lars Pruitt talked about how the song came about, “It is a song we wrote together with Gabe Simon and Dani Poppit in Nashville, TN. Gabe said, 'do you guys wanna write a love song?' and our guitar player Seth said 'I could say a million things about love, I don’t want to.' Gabe said, 'that’s a song.' Dani added the crazy slide guitar idea to the group and initially sang that and we were like yes that makes it a lot weirder of a song which we felt it needed. For me, on a personal level it’s pretty much about me acknowledging how happy I am to be in a super solid relationship with my significant other.”

Following the completion of the Blue October tour, they’ll headline a hometown show at Palace Theatre in Saint Paul on December 17.

Nashville roots-rock soul powerhouse Maggie Rose released her third studio album Have a Seat. The album recorded at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, AL, and was produced by Ben Tanner (Alabama Shakes).

Rose comments, “These songs were written during a contentious time, and there are undertones to the lyrics that are influenced by the state of our world politics and the politics of the music industry. The title Have a Seat is responsorial, placing an emphasis on inclusivity — like, ‘Here, sit down. Let’s try talking to each other.’ One of the most loving things we can do is listen and make others feel heard — give people the space to speak their mind and be themselves. However, there’s also an intended meaning to the title that points to the power in occupying the seat that’s designated to you: I am claiming a seat I believe is rightfully mine, and I want others to do the same.”

Los Angeles’ Chicano Batman will be headlining the mainroom at First Avenue this December 18th. The group latest album Invisible People came out on ATO Records in 2020… but obviously with the pandemic, this will be the first time we’ll hear the songs live in Minnesota.

Los Retros to open. The band recently shared their new single, “Solo Tu”, which was inspired by a classic Spanish love song… and it is their first Spanish-language song.

It was an all-girls night out as Japanese trio Shonen Knife (guitarist Naoko Yamano, bassist Atsuko Yamano, and drummer Risa) headlined the Fine Line Music Café in Minneapolis on October 2nd.

Starting off the show was surfy/garagey girl band Black Widows, featuring singer/guitarist Corinne Caouette, bassist Pamela Laizure, guitarist Sara Muellerleile, and drummer Kim Mancini.

The group started their set with a double instrumental (a great cover of Henry Mancini’s “Peter Gunn Theme Song” and “Scam Likely”).

“Baby Boy” was dedicated to Donald Trump, and “Mummy Mama” was dedicated “for the ladies”.

It was a special night for the band, because it was guitarist Sara’s birthday. She would wear a “Birthday Princess” cowboy hat in the middle of their set.

After their last song “Walk Don't Run”, Corinne started to just sing “Happy Birthday To You”, as they brought out a cake for Sara. Apparently, she turned five years old as there were only five candles.

Next up was riot grrrl-inspired trio Kitten Forever (Corrie Harrigan, Laura Larson, and Liz Elton). We’ve seen the group quite a few time (including their headlining 10 Year Anniversary show in 2016).

As with their previous shows, they play Bikini Kill-esque songs… full of energy and keeping in punk tradition of two-minute songs. All three band members traded vocals on their custom telephone microphone, and also traded instrumental duties.

Liz Elton was clearly excited to open for Shonen Knife, stating that she remembered buying their CD at a music store when she was in high school. When she moved out, she gave the CD to her sister… who also became a fan of SK.

Shonen Knife closed out the show. This was the tail end of their month-long 2019 USA tour (with one remaining date left at Cattivo in Pittsburgh)… so naturally the group’s famous merchandise were reduced to whatever they had left. Band leader Naoko had to apologize for only having their T-Shirts in Small and 2XL. In order to try and drum up sales, she would joke that young girls in Japan would buy XXL shirts as it was the fashion.

As we’ve previously mentioned, this is the closest we get to the original Shonen Knife, as original drummer Mana Nishiura died in a car accident in 1999. Since her death, the band took a break and Atsuko Yamano retired from the group. Atsuko would return to the group, because Ritsuko Taneda went on maternity leave. Since 2015, she’s been permanently part of the group (with current drummer Risa Kawano).

As you can see from their setlist, they mostly sing songs about food (with ice cream being the theme to at least three songs). You would find out that the group enjoys cookies, ice cream, and green tea.

Since the tour is for their new album Sweet Candy Power (Good Charamel Records), they grouped three new songs together: “Party” (fast song), “Dizzy”, and “Ice Cream Cookie Sandwiches” (which features drummer Risa on vocals).

The remainder of their set features older (80s and 90s) songs… but not necessary hit singles. They saved their best-known songs at the very end: “Banana Chips”, “Riding On The Rocket” (my favorite), and “Buttercup (I'm A Super Girl)” as set closer.

The encore started with The Carpenters’ cover “Top of the World”… which they recorded for their wonderful compilation If I Were a Carpenter. The song finale was “Antonio Baka Guy”, which is the song they’ve chosen to end their set on their entire 2019 shows.

Shonen Knife’s last USA 2019 date will be at Cattivo in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia on October 5th.

Our favorite Ramones-inspired Japanese band Shonen Knife will be headlining the Fine Line Music Café. As you know, we’re big fans of these gals, since the early 90s when they released Let’s Knife. Nirvana was a huge fan and asked them to open their shows.

The other cool thing about this band (since we’ve attended many of their shows), is that they have the coolest merchandises, everything from hand towels to keychains to guitar picks.

Currently the band is sisters Naoko and Atsuko with drummer Risa. We were very excited to see the two sisters when they reunited in their Turf Club in 2016 .

Shonen Knife’s latest release is Sweet Candy Power (Good Charamel Records) … keeping in theme with music about food.

Opening will be local bands Kitten Forever and Black Widows. We caught Kitten Forever’s 10 Year Anniversary show at their largest headlining venue at First Avenue in July 2016 and said, “ Although this was First Avenue’s mainroom, the show felt as if it could have been held at the band’s garage. In fact, talking to some fans, they all thought the show was at 7th Street.... and it’s not really obvious why the band chose to play at the large mainroom until you saw all the decorative balloons all over the stage and “Kitten Forever” in balloon writing. The feeling I got from longtime fans were that of pride, nostalgia, and happiness, as they gather together to share their love for Kitten Forever.”

Acclaimed musician Noah Gundersen is back at the Fine Line Music Café in support of his new album Lover (Cooking Vinyl). We saw Gundersen at the Fine Line in Sept 2015 and mentioned, “ Noah Gundersen was the headliner of the night. There was no shortage of people at The Fine Line to see him perform. Noah's songs have been featured in shows such as Sons of Anarchy and The Vampire Diaries. His voice is smooth and powerful. During his song Ledges there was a quick a capella part that really showcased just how powerful his voice is. It was the kind of moment in a song that gives you goosebumps.”

Show up early to check out Lemolo. This is an ambient pop act and led by Seattle based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Meagan Grandall. Lemolo was voted “Best New Band” by City Arts Magazine and named one of Google Play’s “Best Unsigned Artists of the Year” in 2012.

I recently saw that Scottish singer/songwriter Lewis Capaldi was looking for love on Tinder… so there’s some sort of contest that if you swipe right on his profile, you (and a friend) could win an all-paid flight to New York to see him perform.

Certainly, this is one of the hottest singer around, thanks to his breakout single, “Someone You Loved”.

We caught Capaldi in June 2019 and wrote, “Breakthrough single, ‘Someone You Loved’ finished his brief set to rave applause and anyone missing this short lakeside set, has another chance locally, as Lewis Capaldi (yes, distantly related to former Dr. Who actor Peter Capaldi) returns in the fall, to headline the Mainroom at First Avenue on October 3rd.”

Punk grrrls The Coathangers is returning to the Turf Club this Monday, April 8th, to celebrate their new album The Devil You Know (Suicide Squeeze Records).

The last time we saw the trio, we described the show as: “Concert-goers were still desperately trying to squeeze up front as The Coathangers emerged from the curtained-off backstage, each woman bearing an altered version of the band’s rad tour shirts (the design, take from their newest EP Parasite, imagines the band as sirens calling sailors to their doom). Under the glow of the blood-red stage lights, the band cranked out a 50-minute set of gleefully deranged punk that was both buoyant enough to groove to, but hard enough that you’ll probably chip a tooth in the process.”

The Bacon Brothers will be playing the Dakota Jazz Club next week (July 13th), in support of their new self-titled album (released June 1st on Forosoco Music).

The talented brother duo features award-winning actor Kevin Bacon from such films like Hollow Man, Footloose, and Flatliners (the original 90s version) and Emmy-winning composer Michael Bacon.

The brothers will be joined on stage with a full backing band: Paul Guzzone (bass, backing vocals), Joe Mennonna (keyboards, accordion), Ira Siegel (lead guitar, mandolin and backing vocals) and Frank Vilardi (drums).

Of course, due to the popularity of the group and the intimate small seating of the Dakota Jazz Club, the show has sold out.

We caught Niger’s internationally acclaimed Bombino in Oct 2016 and noted, “If you didn’t know, Bombino (real name Omara Moctar) came from a troubled time in Niger, when there were the Tuareg people rebelled against the country in the early 90s. Niger, in fear of another rebellion, basically banned all guitars (which was seen as a symbol of rebellion). Bombino was one of the key musicians representing his people...”

It’s rare to see Niger bands in town, so if you love international music, go see them next Sunday.

Opening up the show was Tights (not to be confused with UK band The Tights), a local band that they originally wanted to be called “Hoes” but the singer’s mom didn’t like the sleazy name. The band came on stage slightly after 9pm and, thus, started a late, late show for a school night.

I don’t think they’re online at all, but I recognized the bassist Shannon Boyer from Royal Brat. I’m pretty sure the other girls are also in other bands... As we previously written, “Minneapolis is swarming with incestuous (creative) relationships.”

Since we couldn’t find their music online, they started their set with a song about ‘Breakfast’, and followed by songs about drinking and birth control.

The Controversial New Skinny Pill

Next up was The Controversial New Skinny Pill (guitarist Skyler, drummer Alana, bassist Dan and synthy Mariel), a hippy-ish weird psych band. Funny enough, Skyler confessed in the middle of their set that he actually ripped his pants doing a dance move on stage.

The ‘Skinny Pill ended their set with a cover of Bachman-Turner Overdrive’s ‘Taking Care of Business’.

The Black Widows

All-girls local trio The Black Widows (drummer Lady Tobalyas, bassist Pamela Laizure, and guitarist Corinne Caouette) closed out the show. The band’s self-titled cassette release is on Wiener Records, a subsidiary of Burger Records.

The band mostly played songs from their self-titled, such as ‘Big Daddy’, but they actually started their show with a brand new song called ‘Mummy Momma’, a Halloween song that they’ve written for their Halloween show “Black Widows’ Greatest Night Ever 3: Halloween Extravaganza!” (complete with Go-Go Dancers) on October 29th at Grumpy’s. Unfortunately, they only played the instrumental version, as they are saving the lyrical debut at the upcoming spooktacular show.

The Gooch Palms’s best-smell setlist ever was at the Triple Rock Social Club show. Apparently the duo wrote their set on their takeout box.

Smelly Setlist

The Gooch Palms are generally known for their over-the-top (and sometime Leroy would play in the buff) shows, but they seemed relatively “in check” at this show. As you can see from their smelly set, they mostly played songs from Introverted Extroverts, including GPBNO (“Gooch Palms Big Night Out”), ‘Sleep Disorder’ and ‘Living Room Bop’.

Late in their set, they explained that where Newcastle, Australia, is at (approximately three hours north of Sydney), and that they’ve never thought they’d be halfway around the world to play in dive bars across North America. They explained that they used to hang out at the ‘Hunter Street Mall’, watching the “smackies, d***heads, the honeys”.

Ra Ra Riot will open the show. The band’s latest album Need Your Light is available now on Barsuk Records.

We previously caught the New York band earlier this April 2016 at the Triple Rock Social Club, which we described as “a bit of an orchestral feel to them due to the violin and cello but at the same time, it's nothing short of great dancing music. It didn't matter what song they were playing, the crowd reacted the same way and was unable to stand still.”

We caught Porches at the 7th Street Entry in April 2016 and described their frontman Aaron Maine as “a charismatic young singer”.

Maine is back at the 7th Street, this time, as headliner and bringing Japanese Breakfast and London’s Rivergazer. We caught the former in July 2016 and noted that Michelle Zauner’s “songs were chilling yet up-beat. At times Zauner's voice was haunting and beautiful and other times you could really hear her punk side come out as she screamed into the microphone.”

Japanese Breakfast’s debut album, Psychopomp is out now on Yellow K Records (not to be confused with K Records).

Los Angeles (by the way of Australia) punk two-piece The Gooch Palms (Leroy Macqueen and Kat Friend) will be headlining the Triple Rock Social Club next Wednesday, September 28th, in support of their new album Introverted Extroverts (Summer Camp Records).

Randomly: The Gooch Palms’ favorite food is a vegetarian burrito at El Metate in San Francisco. Believe them when they say, “We've eaten a LOT of Mexican food since then but can confirm that 5 years and hundreds of burritos later... [El Metate]’s STILL THE BEST!!!”
