Lots of buzz for UK’s Jazmin Bean, thanks to the billion of streams for her debut EP Worldwide Torture. I started reading about her and apparently, she’s the daughter of the drummer from Fluffy. Man, I love Fluffy, despite the critics hating them. I still have their debut album and some EPs and singles. As far as I’m concern that puts Jazmin Bean in very good company.

Minnesota-born, Los Angeles-base Pardyalone (aka Kalvin Tyler Beal) is on his “I Left You in Minnesota Tour”. He is returning home with a double-show (early and late show) at the 7th Street Entry, in Minneapolis.

Pardyalone recently shared his new single, “Why9x,” the follow-up to his recent collaboration with Travis Barker (“Alone”).

“Why9x” was written and produced alongside Jono Dorr (Kehlani, G-Eazy), Gray Trainer, Barry Cohen (Jake Miller, Spencer Sutherland), Nicholas Audino (DJ Snake, Ariana Grande) & Lewis Hughes (Post Malone).

Here are some shows, this week, in the Minneapolis/St Paul area. A couple of cancellations this week: Rose City Band and Rosali show at Turf Club (11/22) and Mac DeMarco at Palace Theatre (11/23) are both cancelled.

Thursday, November 24, is Thanksgiving, so nothing is really going on. Unlike previous years, stores are closed for “Black Thursday”, so you’ll have to wait until the next day for Black Friday.

We saw Raffaella in Sep 2019 and wrote, “New York’s Raffaella (with live backing band bassist Charlie and drummer Alonso) opened up the show with a very brief 30-min set. This was the singer/songwriter’s first time in Minneapolis, and she started her set with her first single, “Bruce Willis” (which she jokingly called it “yippee ki-yay motherf***er”). Although she’s still very new to the music scene (with only one EP called Ballerina released in August 2019 via Mom+Pop), you can tell that she’s been performing for a while now. It probably won’t be long until she’s back in town, and with a strong audience support, given that she’s won over quite a few fans in the audience.”

Although it was her first time in Minneapolis in 2019, she quickly adopted the city as one of her “two hometowns”, as mentioned below. Minneapolis must have been very good to the singer.

Hank (aka Sara L’Abriola) and Ryann to open. Ryann is the moniker for New York-born, Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter Victoria Ryann Zaro, who is also in the band Peach Fuzz.

Minnesota’s best kept secret, Trampled By Turtles will headline the very massive The Armory venue on November 26th, in support of their upcoming album, Alpenglow (Thirty Tigers).

London-based duo Jockstrap (Georgia Ellery and Taylor Skye) is touring the USA in support of their debut album I Love You Jennifer B (Rough Trade Records). Their North America runs through November and December, and will stop by the 7th Street Entry on November 27th.

Jockstrap’s singles ‘Glasgow', ‘50/50’ and ‘Concrete Over Water’ from I Love You Jennifer B were all playlisted by BBC Radio 6 Music, and caught the attention of cultural icons like Chanel and Stella McCartney.

Athens’ The Bad Ends features Five Eight’s Mike Mantione, Dave Domizi, Geoff Melkonian, Christian Lopez, and R.E.M.’s Bill Berry. Their debut album The Power and the Glory is coming out January 20, 2023, on New West Records, and features “Thanksgiving 1915”. The band liked the song so much that they’ve released it as their second single.

When they played the video on NPR’s “All Songs Considered”, singer Mike Mantione commented, “This should qualify for 'The Most Un-Rock and Roll Video Ever.' Dads working at the restaurant. Kind of like The Bear meets the Muppet Movie. It's shot at Geoff's restaurant called Breadwinner Cafe in Dunwoody, GA. Dave Domizi and my daughters are best friends and are in the flash mob scene. That's Bill's actual chef's hat and coat he wore to a practice one night!”

The Bad Ends will play their first ever live show this Sunday, November 27th at Nuci’s Space in Athens, Georgia. Their next booking is at the 40 Watt Club in Athens on January 28, 2023.

You know, Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving), is tomorrow (Nov 26)… but the sales have been taking place all week (and even all month from some retailers). This used to be one of my favorite times of the year, but since the COVID restrictions… I haven’t been too enthusiastic about the shopping “holiday”. Since supplies are limited (products stuck in shipping containers), prices haven’t exactly been amazing.

As usual, the best deals are with large televisions, physical media, and games. Usually games released last year can be had for 50% or more. The typical digital game store fronts have their annual sale, such as Steam and GOG. The discounts are basically the same across the board, and this year, I might not get anything. There aren’t any games that I’m interested in playing.

I take that back, Mass Effect: Legendary Edition is on sale, and it’s a game (three games actually) that I’m interested in checking out the new “remaster”. It’s currently on sale for $35 on Amazon, but unfortunately, there’s no rush for me, as I played the original games when they first came out and I’m not exactly sure if I want to play the same story again.

If you don’t want to spend money at all, over at Epic, you can get Kid A Mnesia Exhibition for absolutely free. I love Radiohead, but Kid A and Amnesiac was a change in direction for their music. Although I appreciate those albums, I still prefer OK Computer-era Radiohead. Still, for $0, it’s worth checking out Kid A Mnesia Exhibition.

Speaking of free, if you are in the area, stop by the world famous Mall of America, in Bloomington, to see Los Angeles’ Jordy and New Jersey’s WanMor on Black Friday, November 26th, for free. Cory Branan will be stopping by the Aster Café, in support of ADIOS. We last saw Branan in Oct 2016 and said, “Opening up the show was Mississippi-born Cory Branan. It was just Branan and his acoustic guitar as he sang song about America like ‘Nightmare in America’ and ‘Tall Green Grass’ played early in his set. A couple of cover songs, like Richard Thompson’s ‘Beeswing’ were played, but personally speaking, Branan’s original songs are just as good, if not better. Songs like ‘The Freefall’, ‘I Ain't Gonna Go Back’ and ‘The Prettiest Waitress in Memphis’ told great little stories and gave us a glimpse of American life.”

Special guest Trapper Schoepp will open. We last saw Trapper Schoepp in May 2017 and wrote, “As a former resident of Green Bay, I was charmed to learn that Trapper Schoepp’s newest EP was written all about the city’s Bay Beach, an east-side amusement park nestled on the bay that happens to be celebrating 125 years of existence this year. Schoepp treated the Turf crowd to a performance of Bay Beach Amusement Park in its entirety with help from Shades bandmates Justin Krol on drums, Quinn Scharber on guitar, brother Tanner on bass/vocals and a 3-piece horn section lovingly called “The Horns”.”

With Black Friday looming over America, some stores, such as Best Buy, are already doing “Black Friday Prices Now” (since November 1st). This is a great promotional thing for these stores, as consumers (such as myself), are already spending their money at their stores, rather than waiting to spend it elsewhere. I think it’s smart, especially against online retailers like Amazon, who traditionally might have similar prices when Black Friday comes around.

For those outside of America, Black Friday is the name of the day after Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is the last Thursday of November, and for most Americans, they have Thursday and Friday off from work. That Friday, historically, most Americans would go shopping.

Of course, there’s always Cyber Monday (the Monday after Black Friday), and the recent Singles Day (November 11 - which is mainly a Chinese celebration) …

Anyway, when I saw that the new MicroSoft’s Surface Pro 7 (with keyboard cover) on sale for $600, I couldn’t pass it up. Currently their price is $700, but MicroSoft’s website is still showing $600.

Sure, it’s the entry model version, i3 with 8GB ram, but I can’t really complain because of the price. I would’ve liked to pay a little more to upgrade the chip, but those i5 models weren’t on sale.

I already have an iPad Pro 12.9, but despite buying a Logitech keyboard, it is definitely not a computer replacement. There are some things that the iPad does really well, which is reading and watching movies, but if you want to do video editing or PhotoShop editing… it’s severely limited.

The major thing that sets the The Surface Pro apart from Chromebooks or iPads, is that the Surface runs the full Windows 10 operating system. All the Windows software you own and use will run on this laptop/tablet! Of course, that doesn’t mean that some software, like the latest games, will run very well on the Surface Pro…. But it will run.

It’s so good to finally able to run Steam or GOG on the new Surface Pro without any issues. The only downside is that software made especially for iOS and Android won’t exactly work on Windows (that is the fault of the developer).

For example, popular comic book reading application ComiXology (an Amazon company), refuses to develop for the Windows’ platform. You can view your comics on their website, but it doesn’t offer offline viewing.

There is a workaround for this, software such as BlueStack is an Android emulator and you can run Android apps on Windows. Unfortunately, it’s not a great solution, and it’s a little slower (with lower resolution) on my Surface Pro than I would like.

If you have a Surface Pro 6, don’t bother to upgrade to the 7, as the only changes are the 10th generation Intel chip and new USB-C connection. Not a major upgrade, but the USB-C is pretty nice, as it will also charge your Surface if you don’t want to use the magnet Surface charger.

There are cheaper Windows alternative out in the world, but if you’re looking for the nice form factor of a tablet / laptop, and if you can afford it, the Surface Pro 7 is the latest and best of its class.

Hey, happy Thanksgiving. It is kind of funny how Black Friday have steadily creep up to Thursday as well (the trend started last year).

You know me, I love a good deal... every year around this time, I go out and scour the various retail stores, looking to get some discounts. Our motto is "you've got to spend money to save money!" Maybe it is just me, but looking at the advertisements for this year's Black Friday sales, there are not any really good deals.

Of the things I'm interested in:

Last year I bought a bunch of Universal Steelbook Bluray for $3.96 (they all came with digital codes). This year Walmart is selling the same Steelbooks, with some expanded titles, for $7.98 - doubling the price! Not worth the price of admission...

PlayStation 4 bundled with two free games for $400. Basically the same cost as a regular priced gaming console, only with two game titles (The Last of Us and Grand Theft Auto 5). The real deal is the Xbox One which sells for $329 with a game. However, some things to consider: (1) the machine is not as powerful and does not play games at 1080p native and (2) a re-designed smaller and improved version of the Xbone will probably be available next Black Friday.

Games sales are around $30-$35 for some old game titles. Again, not great prices.

The Amazon Phone is on sale for $199 unlocked, originally $499... a good deal, but if you've already own a smart phone, there's no need to rush out to get this. Also, there is version two of the Fire Phone just around the corner, so buyers beware.

The best deals I've seen are the 50-inch 1080p television sets - they are priced about $200 at Best Buy and Walmart. That is a great price, unfortunately I already own several 40-inch TVs! Still, despite the great price, good luck on actually being one of the very few that will get your hands on it. From past experiences, usually they have very limited stock of the television sets.

Today is Thanksgiving, which means million of turkeys aren't going to be very happy.

I didn't have a lot of songs about Turkeys, but I did find this song "The Thanksgiving Song" by Adam Sandler.

I'm actually not a big fan of Sandler (sorry, I think it's his voice or something), so I have avoided all his movies. Clearly I'm in the wrong because his movies (Billy Madison (1995), Happy Gilmore (1996), The Wedding Singer (1998), Punch-Drunk Love (2002), and recently Chuck and Larry (2007)) have all done really well.

I was kind annoyed to find out that he's rumored to play in Quentin Tarantino's Inglorious Bastards.

Anyway, "The Thanksgiving Song" appeared on his first album They're All Gonna Laugh at You!, released in 1993 - however it first appeared on Saturday Night Live.

I had a pretty hard time locating any NBC videos on bootube, and I'm not exactly sure where NBC videos officially went to. I did manage to find a clip of "The Thanksgiving Song" on his website (you can download it: thanksgiving_480x360.mov). Here's a streaming video from myspace.

Since Sandler was a regular cast on SNL at this point in time, he also got fellow cast members to appear on the album (such as Rob Schneider and David Spade).

The album have sold over two million copies and was nominated for Best Comedy Album at the Grammy's.
