British psychedelic band Temples is currently touring in June in support of their latest album Exotico (ATO Records). The group stop in at the Fine Line Music Café in Minneapolis on Saturday night.

Opening the show was Chicago’s heavy, prog psychedelic rock band Post Animal with a 45-min set. The Chicago six-piece features Dalton Allison (bass/vocals), Jake Hirshland (guitar/keyboard/vocals), Javi Reyes (guitar/vocals), Wesley Toledo (drums/vocals), and Matt Williams (guitar/vocals).

Everyone in the band took turn to take lead vocals at some point in their set, so it felt like there was really no one band leader. They played songs from their new self-produced Love Gibberish album, co-written by the entire band. This record is special to them, as after releasing two albums on Polyvinyl, they’ve decided to do things on their own. All six members met at Hirshland’s family farm, and produced months of demos and finding themselves where they first named the band.

“This album takes us back to how it felt before we ever thought we'd be an actual touring band, with no expectations for ourselves,” guitarist Matt Williams says. “Now, we’re inside the gibberish-ness of life, trying to figure out what we need to survive.”

The band looked like they were having a very good time on stage, often moving and invading each other’s space on stage.

Contrary to the hyper movements were dreamy, psychedelic UK band Temples, who took their time to play songs from their latest, latest album Exotico. The record was produced by Sean Ono Lennon, who previously worked on Temples’ single, “Paraphernalia” in 2020. The band loved what he brought to the table on “Paraphernalia” that they asked to work with Lennon again for the new album.

Temples, currently featuring James Edward Bagshaw on vocals and lead guitar, Adam Thomas Smith on rhythm guitar and keyboards, Thomas Edward James Walmsley on bass, and Rens Ottink on drums, exploded onto the psychedelic music scene in 2013 with only a handful of singles at the Great Escape NME Showcase: “Temples were surprising solid. They reminded me of Kasabian and Pink Floyd. Lead singer sported the old-school curly brown Afro 60's look and the other members looked like the Davies brothers from the Kinks. The only downfall to the set, is that they didn't play "We Were Children."”

By 2014, the band had a hit debut record Sun Structures, which landed at #7 in the UK charts, and was headlining First Avenue’s mainroom in April 2014.

You see, Go 96.3’s audience is slightly more pop music fans, while the 93x’s audience at First Avenue leaned to the hard rock/metal audience. Multi-hyphenate experimental band Bayonne (aka Roger Sellers) is currently on tour in support of his new album Temporary Time (Nettwerk Records). The tour will take them to Minneapolis, at the 7th Street Entry.

We caught Bayonne in April 2017 and compared him to Thom Yorke: “Opening up the show was Austin’s Bayonne, the stagename for one-man-band Roger Sellers, with a brief 30-min set. Armed with headphones and using various loops and pre-recorded beats, combined with raw vocal performances and sometime live instruments, Bayonne was able to recreate some unique songs. Some of the songs sounded like what Thom Yorke (Radiohead) would create with his experiments.”

Kicking off the Sue McLean & Associates and Bauhaus Brew Labs’ Summer 2023 outdoor Sparkyard Sound Series is headliner Grace Potter on Tuesday, June 13th.

We’re big fans of Sue McLean shows, and with the previous McLean’s show at Utepils Brewery and any shows at the Minnesota Zoo, we can say that these shows are some of our favorites. In fact, we’re hoping to cover more McLean shows as the Summer rolls in.

We last saw Grace Potter at the State Theatre in Oct 2015 and described it as, “Although billed as strictly a "Grace Potter" show, it felt very much like a regular Grace Potter & the Nocturnals show, with over 60% of their set featuring Nocturnals songs, including some of their biggest hits, on the encore: "Apologies" (a request for a fan), "The Lion The Beast The Beat", and "Paris (Ooh La La)". Unlike previous Nocturnals shows, Potter is actively dancing and bouncing back and forth throughout the night. Plus "costume changes" like putting on her cape (during "Timekeeper"), taking off clothing on "Nothing But the Water I" and removing shoes for "Medicine". The latter song, she invited the audience to come closer and dance.”

Kiss the Tiger at Bottleneck (22 Feb 2022)

Local group Kiss the Tiger will open. We’ve previously seen them in Feb 2022 at Lawrence, Kansas: “Next up was a Twin Cities favorite, Minneapolis band Kiss the Tiger, who had their third studio release, Vicious Kid, come out last June and is on their first brief tour outside of the Upper Midwest. The band began in late 2016 and has been gradually gaining more attention ever since, named a “Picked to Click” band by former alt-weekly City Pages in 2019.”

So far, the other two Sparkyard Sound Series shows scheduled are Shakey Graves & Lucius (we love Lucius!) on July 28 and St. Paul & The Broken Bones (these guys are full of energy and amazing live) on August 17.

Please note that these outdoor shows, due to curfews and noise ordinances, takes place incredibly early. Doors at 5pm, music at 6pm, so be there early.

I may have told this story before, but I used to be a volunteer radio DJ at Fresno State’s KFSR 90.7 FM. My timeslot was Thursday from 10pm to midnight, I mostly stuck to Britpop … but my friend, the late Melinda (aka Black Velveeta), would play some quirky “cheesy” stuff, everything from April March to the Sleestacks to Cranes to Mr T Experience to Wally Pleasant. She loves those weird bands.

Anyway, one day, we got a CD from Pansy Division in the early 90s and we loved it. I guess, back then, being gay wasn’t something you talk about. But Pansy Division, they were openly gay, and it really inspired so many other bands to follow in their footsteps.

Now, I’ve never seen Pansy Division live (if I had, I probably blacked out and don’t remember), but Melinda did see them with Green Day. I don’t know if I believe her, but she told me that someone had a bag of sh*** and threw it at Billie Joe… because their album was called Dookie.

Anyway, the band is celebrating the 30th anniversary of their debut album Undressed (Lookout! Records) with a special 2023 shows. If you’ve never seen the band live, here is your chance!

Pansy Division will play the 7th Street Entry on June 15th with support from Bev Rage & The Drinks and Lumari.

Yorkshire’s Billie Marten is touring in support of her new album Drop Cherries (IMPERIAL Music).

The album was recorded entirely on tape in Somerset and Wales late last summer, and it marks the very first time that Billie Marten has both written and co-produced (with Dom Monks) one of her records.

The title is taken from a tale she heard from a friend just before she was starting to create songs for the album, and the title track came soon after. It’s a metaphor where the gift of cherries stands for offering someone your love; doing anything you can to make them happy. “Dropping cherries,” she begins, “is such a strong, visceral image that I tried to channel throughout recording in Somerset and Wales, to capture the vibrancy, unpredictability, and occasional chaos one experiences within a relationship. Imagine stamping blood-red cherries onto a clean, cream carpet and tell me that’s not how love feels.”

The singer/songwriter will stop by the 7th Street Entry on June 16th.

20-year-old buzzing songstress Lyn Lapid is out on tour in support of her forthcoming EP to love in the 21st century (Mercury Records/Republic Records). The new single from the EP, “ok with it,” out now on.

Lyn says, “When I was writing ‘ok with it,’ I had my hometown friends in mind. I thought about the friends I grew up with and how we haven’t been much in contact ever since we graduated. I found it a little strange that even though we all promised to call each other at college, neither of us put in much effort to keep in touch right when college started. What was even more strange was that I wasn’t really sad about it at all. I wasn’t sad watching them make new friends or get into relationships they never told me about, because I never bothered to tell them about what was going on in my life either. That’s what I wrote ‘ok with it’ about, how the end of a relationship doesn’t need a clear and conclusive break to be declared over, and that it can just be a matter of realizing that you both stopped keeping tabs on each other.”

British singer-songwriter Michael Kiwanuka will play the Palace Theatre on Monday, February 3rd. The show is sold out.

We saw him in 2013 and said, “Drawing comparisons to Otis Redding and Bill Withers, Kiwanuka manages to bring a style that is his own- humble and natural; a distinctive voice, with smooth grooved songs that show obvious staying power. Opening with ‘If You’d Dare’, he next segued into ‘Tell Me a Tale’, a spirited song that has received local radio airplay and which got the crowd in his corner going forward. A pleasant take on Jimi Hendrix’s ‘Waterfall’ revealed the singer’s obvious affection for the guitar hero, and he did the song ample justice.”

Desert Daze has been a myriad of magical atmospheric wonder along with the most entertaining of artists .... Temples Along their way to Minneapolis, Temples have been building huge buzz appearing at Great Escape 2013 and (recently) SXSW 2014. With all that excitement for the band, they sold out the Turf Club presale … JJUUJJUU JJUUJJUU rocked out so hard core, complete with Phil giving a heartfelt thank you to all of the Dazers for being patient as they clean up the mishaps from the unforeseen forecast. … Pussy Riot A similar story happened with Russian punk group Pussy Riot being jailed for performing "Virgin Mary, Please Drive Putin Away" song in front of a church…

Crowds gathered seamlessly this year into the Moreno Beach area of Lake Perris for the autumn ritual of camping, yoga, swimming and the hottest bands you’ll see all year. In its 8th go-around, this was a vast improvement from the insane parking situation and nasty weather of 2018, thanks be to the gods. Desert Daze is quite often referred to as the greatest festival ever, and in all my years of music festivals (and believe me, there have been many) I have to concur that this one undoubtably tops the charts. From art instillations that will dazzle your mind to tea ceremonies in tents under the desert morning sky, this festival is for the light of heart, the TRUE music lovers, and the seekers. While I was mesmerized by the first DAZE I attended at the Metaphysics Institute in Joshua Tree in 2017, there is something magical about the festival continuing on with its desert theme while adding a sparkling lake that you can drift in whenever you please. It’s also an hour and a half away from sunny Los Angeles, so fellow Angelenos should consider themselves pretty blessed 🙏.

SATURDAY

Polish band Trupa Trupa took the stage first thing on Saturday at 1:30 on the Moon stage. Unfortunately, the Daze crowd were still rubbing their eyes and scrambling for coffee (especially after The Flaming Lips, which I was too much of a grandma to make it ’til midnight to see) so the fans were slim for these guys. Lead singer Grzegorz Kwiatkowski (pronounced Gregory in the states) introduced every song by title, so I know that they mostly played songs from their newest album Of the Sun.  In recent years, Trupa Trupa have toured extensively, playing at Austin’s SXSW, Primavera Sound, Iceland Airwaves, Colours of Ostrava, and Waves Vienna. The song Turn is super heavy with powerful drums, and I would be interested to know the context of their lyrics in a future interview. “From Poland with love!” was the band’s sweet sign-off.

Blackwater Holylight was one of the sickest highlights of the festival. This all girl band are like Hell’s Angel’s dressed in black and ready to knock your socks off. These Oregon based gals had their second album drop on Friday, and they were “So happy to be sharing it with you guy.” Amidst technical difficulties they gained massive support from the crowd, and got through a killer set quite effortlessly.

Altin Gün had a pretty little redhead in a white dress singing vocals with a tambourine, a ridiculous guitarist and a sound that is influenced by the Turkish 70’s. They have two drummers which is always entertaining, one playing the bongos with maracas interspersed throughout. Their new album Gece, released this April is one to keep in heavy rotation and was the entirety of their set.

JJUUJJUU got the crowd amped as they graced the stage in all their desert glory…white doctor coats included. “This feels pretty damn good right? We work all year for this weekend! My  name is Phil and I work for YOU!” Phil Pirrone screams into the mic. It’s not about selling tickets for him. It’s about getting bunch of good people together to listen to good bands in a good place…that’s it. I attest to this because I have seen it over and over- the good people, the good bands and the good places. He brings life to music and the energy together for the fans and for musicians alike. And they also put on one hell of a show. JJUUJJUU is not only an act not to be missed, it’s an experience, a recognition that makes you believe that rock is indeed not dead. As the festival grows, this band grows…and what a sight it is to see.

The Lumerians put on a crazy set with all black costumes and headlamps. Don’t ask me what they played. Just ask me if we danced (we did).

Pussy Riot was packed in the Sanctuary for the evening. This Russian act is beyond political…it’s downright explosive. They are creepy and somehow nostalgic of something between t.A.T.u. and like…Slipknot. The bizarre outfits and masks and slippers…oh my. It’s a heart-palpitating sight and their Russian version of ‘London Bridges Falling Down’ makes you rethink society as a whole. In short…a spectacle not to be missed.

Desert Daze has been a myriad of magical atmospheric wonder along with the most entertaining of artists .... The Flaming Lips I think this was my first time seeing The Flaming Lips, but I could be wrong. Seems odd that this was "a very special Early Evening performance", since the band's psychedelic/space rock seems to work better at night … Stereolab Headliners include ESG, The Apples in Stereo, Superchunk, Waxahatchee, Laetitia Sadier (Stereolab), Sneaks, Elf Power, The Veldt, Pylon Reenactment Society, Eureka California and Tunabunny. … Devo Devo is in top form. They have their show down to an artform, complete with their own lights and fog machine and images on screen. With this sort of tight control over their images … Ween Anyway, Gene and Dean Ween are back, newly reunited as Ween, proving that they haven’t quite push the little daisies just yet. The reunion was announced last year (November 2015) … Wu-Tang Clan The entire Wu-Tang Clan (minus the ones that are no longer on Earth) is back in the studio with RZA for a new record this Fall. It is said that autumn is a time of rebirth, reflection and revitalization the soul. It’s a time of coziness, togetherness and ease as the cooler weather blankets our everyday lives. For some this means pumpkin spice lattes and dinners with friends by a fire and for some, it means an expansive weekend long music festival filled with a wonderland of modern-day rock legends. It means a perfectly curated playground of psychedelic art and communion with the promise of an all-around good freakin’ time. For some, the allurement of this season is the sprinkling of rock tunes on your tongue and a whole new version of Woodstock. Rock, my friends, is not dead.

This festival has undoubtably earned the title of a SoCal staple as each year gets seemingly better and better. Last year was challenging with the rain and the parking situation of a new venue, but the location is in the same stunning setting of Moreno Beach (situated beautifully between the San Jacinto and San Bernardino Mountains), so this year they’ve worked out the kinks. You can float peacefully on the lake while hearing your favorite bands christen the sky in the background. You can head on over to The Mystic Bazaar, a safe haven for those needing a breather from the enormity of the crowd energy. Here in this village holds all the yoga, tea ceremonies and sound baths your little heart can desire. The amenities and curated adornments here are endless, and there is always some amazement around every corner.

Now for the bands!

The gentleness of Friday starts out with Triptides, Wave, Frankie and the Witch Fingers and DIIV. Brooklyn’s DIIV released their third album, Deceiver, yesterday on the label Captured Tracks. The album is grungier than they’ve been in the past with a kind of Silverchair resemblance to it, so with this drop it is sure to be a highly anticipated performance. Singer-songwriter Jessica Pratt will be performing recent LP Quiet Signs at the Block at 4pm. Fred Armisen will do a comedy set in the mid-afternoon, followed by Atlas Sound and Crumb.

Saturday kicks off with Blackwater Holylight, the super heavy psych all-girl band from Portland. This group has all the elements to make you squirm and drool with delight, from folk-rock to grunge melodies to whispers of gothic intensity…and they’re mesmerizing onstage. Following acts are Klaus Johann Grobe, Altin Gün, Anika, Surfbort, Big Business and the true legends themselves- JJUUJJUU. Going into sunset time is DEVO, Cruel Diagnonals and Lumerians. Ween, Nick Hakim, and Pussy Riot. Temples highlight the evening.

The most massive act on the list is surely Wu-Tang Clan, performing their 36 Chambers LP on Sunday. The crew of DD this year (started by Phil Pirrone’s of JJUUJJUU, who always performs at least one killer set) were smart, because they saved a ton of the most exciting acts for the wee hours into Sunday evening. Also performing Sunday are Dead Meadow, Moses Sumney, The Black Angels, White Fence and Shintaro Sakamoto, to name a few.

Weather permitting (Tame Impala got rained out last year halfway through their set) this upcoming weekend will surely be one of mystery, wonderment and delight. The scintillating adventure of time travel or a portal to a new universe is always optional…but never enforced.

Kettering’s Temples (singer / guitarist James Edward Bagshaw, keys / rhythm guitarist Adam Thomas Smith, bassist Thomas Edward James Warmsley, and drummer Samuel Toms) sold out their Turf Club show in St Paul last week, October 21st.

Vinyl Williams

Opening up the show was Los Angeles’ Vinyl Williams (real name: Lionel Williams). Williams and his band performed mostly from his new Brunei album, playing “space age” songs under a custom film projection (which created this psychedelic look).

We’ve been writing about Temples since their 2013 appearance at Great Escape... and noted that they had great buzz at SXSW 2014, describing them as “T-Rex meets Syd Barrett from Pink Floyd. Get a groove and keep it going.... Lots of buzz on these guys and deservedly so.”

Setlist

For Temples’ first Minnesota show, it was originally listed at the Turf Club - but as the venue quickly sold out - they upgraded their first MN show appearance to the much bigger stage at First Avenue in April 2014. So it’s good to have Temples back at the original Turf Club last week (October 21st), even though the smaller venue could not accommodate for all their fans. The show sold out, but this time, they could not upgrade to First Avenue (as it was booked for Clutch).

Still touring for their debut Sun Structures (a Top 10 UK debut named Rough Trade’s “Album of the Year” for 2014), the band is inbetween records and previewed some new tracks from their pending upcoming 2017 album on Fat Possum Records.

The new songs (‘I Wanna Be Your Mirror’, ‘Roman God Like Man’, ‘Certainty’, ‘Ankh’, ‘Strange Or Be Forgotten’) fit in with their psych sound, and, if it’s any indication, their forthcoming album will do well.

After this US tour (ending tonight), the band will be taking a much-needed break to put the final touches on their upcoming record.

Temples’ last US date will take place tonight (10/29) at the Brighton Music Hall in Boston, Massachusetts

English four-piece Temples will be back in Minnesota this Friday, October 21st. They are still touring in support of their debut Sun Structures (a Top 10 UK debut named Rough Trade’s “Album of the Year” for 2014), however, expect to hear some preview tracks like ‘Certainty’ from a forthcoming album (set for 2017 on Fat Possum Records).

Frontman James Bagshaw who produced the single, “when writing the melody for ‘Certainty,’ I wanted to create something with almost an eerie, early Disney vibe, something playful and harmonious, but with a dark twist. Producing the song was as much about layering as it was about sparseness -- the verses needed to reveal the thumping motion of the bass and the reflective lyrics, and the melody had to be paired with the right ambience. The chorus was approached in an opposite way, layer after layer, thickening the sound. There’s a blend between moog bass, and actual bass, and the song switches between synthetic and analogue sounds throughout. The guitar mirrors the synth, and visa versa.”

Liverpool's Temples is back on tour, returning back to Minneapolis' First Avenue last night, May 29th.

Transmission's DJ Jake Rudh used the video projection to showcase a variety of late 60s, 70s, 80s mostly British bands (some exceptions for Sonic Youth and Nazz). If you've ever been to Transmission, you'll recognize the selections, including David Bowie, Rolling Stones, Broadcast, Stereolab, etc.

Chatham Rise

The first band was local Chatham Rise, sounding like Chapterhouse, Slowdive, and very early Lush. They spent their entire 30-min set in near darkness, with a fog machine.

Chatham Rise's latest release is a split album We Are The Sun with TheLightshines.

Fever the Ghost

Los Angeles' Fever the Ghost played some 70s-era psych-pop songs. Singer Casper came on stage with a veil and what looked like a homemade cape/blanket. The cape was discarded by the third song, "Calico". That song was covered by Temples for the Heavenly Record Store Day Release (April 2015).

Their 30-min set included some tracks from their EP Crab In Honey, plus tracks from their forthcoming 2015 full-length debut for Heavenly Recordings and Complicated Game. New tracks included "Keep In The Dark", which may sound simple with the repetitive "keep in the dark/stay out of the light", but it's incredibly catchy.

While the band is clearly young, I can tell right away if you're into modern psychedelic bands, you will probably love Fever the Ghost.

Temples came on stage, filming the audience. Singer James Bagshaw explained, "We're filming everything, you're all in our documentary."

Once that was out of the way, Temples basically played the same set from last year, which shouldn't surprise anyone since they only have one album Sun Structures under their belt.

Having said that, Temples is working on a new record, and they previewed a couple of new tracks on this new set: "Volcano" medley with "Saviour" and later "Move With The Season" (which Bagshaw described as "really good").

"Mesmerise" closed out their set with an extended instrumental jam that took over five minutes to finish.

Encore included "Sand Dance" and fan favorite "Shelter Song".

Temples' Sun Structures is out now on Heavenly Records (Fat Possum Records for USA). Look for their upcoming album sometime in the future.
