         Both before and after their recent sold-out First Avenue gig, Tegan and Sara graced the airwaves of two local Minneapolis radio stations, in support of their 7th full-length, Heartthrobs.

         Just before their evening performance, they treated a small and select audience (myself included) to an acoustic performance and some conversation at Cities97’s Studio C in St. Louis Park. At this session, they talked about memories of Minneapolis, and discovering Prince’s songwriting genius (via Cyndi Lauper’s re-make of ‘When You Were Mine’) and the Replacements' "Unsatisfied" (courtesy of one Ryan Adams). They also thought aloud about what kind of food truck they might envision owning, and the evolving of the more 'commercial' sound found on their newest album. After the session, the girls were nice enough to stay briefly for pictures and autographs.

New Kids on the Block was an even bigger influence

         The morning after their performance in First Avenue’s mainroom, they woke up early and made their way to the other side of the Mississippi River and landed in St. Paul, at the studios of 89.3 The Current. For this private session with the morning DJs, the Quin sisters went into more detail about choosing Greg Kurstin (aka half of The Bird and the Bee; and Pink, Lily Allen, Sia producer) to produce their latest album, and why Joey McIntyre from New Kids on the Block was an even bigger influence than first realized.

        Songs played at both appearances were "Back In Your Head,"(from The Con) and "I Was A Fool" & "Closer"(from Heartthrobs).

Tegan and Sara played to a sold out First Avenue show in Minneapolis last night, March 6th.

DIANA

Their opening band was Diana, an un-googleable name, as singer Carmen Elle confessed on stage. Their emotional songs reminded me of Tender Forever (but minus that cheesy 80s saxophone!)

Along with some equipment malfunctions, the trembling loud bass did no favors for Diana's sound. Still, the band seemed really positive as they play "Born Again" with no guitars.

Like most bands playing First Avenue for the first time, they were very excited to be playing at the "Purple Rain club" as they put it and jokingly said they put Prince on the guestlist (which surprisingly a lot of out-of-town bands tend to do!)

Tegan & Sara's intro music was Tommy James & the Shondells' "I Think We're Alone Now" (which was made famous by Tiffany years later).

As you can see from their set list, the band did every song from their new album, Heartthrobs, but they mixing it up between "old hits" and fan-favorites. Of course, they got "Walking with a Ghost" out of the way as soon as possible before playing a three-block new songs of "I Was A Fool", "I'm Not Your Hero", and "I Couldn't Be Your Friend." I can tell that the sisters were really excited about their new songs. And the new stuff is actually pretty good, especially with the epic set closer called "Closer".

On a funnier note, Tegan told us why she is depressed when she thinks of Minneapolis. Apparently the first time they played here, the airline broke her guitar. To make matter worst, her girlfriend at the time changed her telephone number/broke up with Tegan. So now whenever she's in Minneapolis, that's all she thinks about. As for Sara, she openly just flat-out flirted with the Minneapolis crowd, calling them extremely attractive.

Both of them were extremely grateful for their fans (many of them have been following the band throughout North America) and how all of their shows having been selling out across the country.

As for the encore, there was a great medley of old favorites. The reason for this, as they told us on stage, was that spanning over seven albums; they have a lot of music and can't possibly do every request.

The second song on the encore was "Feel It in My Bones", which you may remember was their collaboration with Tiësto.

Tegan & Sara are currently on tour in support of Heartthrobs.

Tegan and Sara was one of those bands that I had heard of for many years but never listened to until I saw them open up for Death Cab for Cutie at the Hollywood Bowl a few years ago. Frankly, I thought those days were behind me. The days when I would go to a show and hear a band I have never heard before and become a fan right there and then, but it happened with Tegan and Sara on that summer night.

So I was excited when I found out that they were going to be playing in LA and bought tickets for the show without even thinking about who would go with me. A friend of mine was going to go, but at the last minute got ill so I went to the show by myself. I had been to Club Nokia once a few years ago when my friend Roberta won tickets to a show. They were some young band whom I had never heard of before and now I don’t even remember their name. In fact I had totally forgotten about the metal detectors until I went into the venue on Friday night (February 1st). Club Nokia has to be one of the only music venues I have ever been in that makes you go through a metal detector. At the Palladium they have a hand wand that they use if needed, but a metal detector I don’t understand, especially for an indie band.

The first good news of the night was the fact that the Staples Center was not in use and I was able to find parking for $5. The second good news of the night was the fact that I was easily able to sell my extra ticket to a nineteen year old girl who will probably remember that show for years. The third good news would have to be that since the general admission floor was already full, I got to go upstairs and sit right behind the VIP section. Clea Duvall (an actress) who I used to see at all the “girl band” shows sat down in the row in front of me and later I noticed Greg Kurstin (the guy who produced their new CD and who is in the band “the Bird and the Bee”) sitting in the same row. Celebrity sightings aside, it was a fantastic show. All the ladies were in the house. I haven’t seen that many women at a show since early Sleater-Kinney and Le Tigre shows. Having a female audience always changes the dynamic of the show. The energy level is different (maybe due to all the estrogen in the room) and I feel safer at these shows. Not that I don’t feel safe at other indie rock shows I go to, but the lack of males in the room makes it feel more communal at these shows. I feel as if I could be on stage or that the music is speaking directly towards me compared to when I watch mixed or all male bands perform.

If there was a female band that exuded sexiness …

My friend John once told me that the reason he likes female bands is because they are not on stage in order to get laid. He thinks their music is more authentic than male rock bands. He might be right. Of course I just think he likes female bands because he might get laid. :o If there was a female band that exuded sexiness, it would be Tegan and Sara. Maybe because their songs are mostly about relationships and their new cd titled “Heartthrob” is no exception. In my mind, they are the most “male” female fronted band around with lyrics like “how come you don’t want me now?” and “all I dream of lately is how to get you underneath me.” Most of the songs on the new cd sound very similar and have a lot of keyboard programming on them. A Greg Kurstin stamp that he places on all the material he produces. I love their last cd “Sainthood” which Chris Walla produced (which is probably why they were playing with Death Cab when I first saw them). “Sainthood” has variation to it, while “Heartthrob” is monotonous. Catchy, but monotonous none the less. Live it works because the songs were mixed up and Tegan and Sara played songs spanning their last four albums on Friday night. But as an album “Heartthrob” is not as strong as their older stuff. The audience seemed to agree with me and cheered harder for their older songs. As a band they decided to take a risk by going with a more pop producer and well the proof is in the pudding. The question is going to be, where do they go from here?

Tegan and Sara: Heartthrob

This is actually a true story about Tegan & Sara. About ten years ago, I met this woman and ended up at her house. I saw that she had T&S's debut album, Under Feet Like Ours in her collection (I like to judge people based on their music shelf, haha.) So, for her birthday, I got her two Tegan & Sara albums If It Was You and So Jealous (the latter had just came out).

I thought she would be ecstatic. As it turned out, that album on her shelf was on loan from a friend… and the fact was she wasn't even a fan. On retrospect, I should have seen it coming.

Anyway, I like Tegan & Sara. I think their So Jealous was such a great album, and even Jack White agreed (having covered "Walking with a Ghost").

Tegan & Sara have just announced their headlining tour in support of their seventh album, Heartthrob, which is coming out in the U.S. on January 29th, 2013, on Warner Bros. Records. Look for them to appear on Jimmy Kimmel on January 31st (possibly to sing their new single, "Closer", which they performed on David Letterman in November)!

Fans should want to get the Heartthrob limited bundle, which comes with a really cool "Heartthrob Magazine". This custom magazine reminds me of teenbop glossy magazine! I think promo items like that are innovative, I only wish bands would release stuff like that or books or magazines with the CD. Anyroad, you can get the bundle at warnerbrosrecords.com.

Earth Day

Today is Earth Day, so here are some songs that deal with this glorious planet.

The 3 R's

First up is "The 3 R's" by Jack Johnson. It's taken from the Curious George soundtrack titled Sing-a-Longs and Lullabies and is an upbeat, children's song about reducing, reusing, and recycling. Not one of the greatest songs in his arsenal, but I like it for its positive message.

Tegan and Sara - Our Trees

Second is "Our Trees" by Tegan and Sara from their first album Under Feet Like Ours and is about missing trees. There's a thread on a fansite message board about the song; it was written when they noticed there was a lack of trees in their backyard/neighborhood and it's not supposed to be a political statement.

Land of Trees

The third track is "Land of Trees" by Micah Dorsey. He used to be in the band Pilotdrift who I posted about recently. There aren't any lyrics available online, but from listening to the song, I think it's about living in nature. It's a soft, melodic, mellow, calm, peaceful song. [Jason]
