As you know, we’re big fans of Bikini Kill, Le Tigre, Julie Ruin, riot grrrls… so it it was a delight to read Kathleen Hanna’s memoir Rebel Girl: My Life as a Feminist Punk. The book came out in mid-May and became an instant New York Times Bestseller. You can find the book at your favorite book store... even Target has the book, next to Taylor Swift’s book, of course.

The book is written by Hanna, in her own voice, so it was a very easy read. She has a surprisingly good memory, writing about herself when she was the lead role of Annie in a local school play. She was generous with photos of her life, which are sprinkled throughout the book.

The first part of the book reveals a lot of personal family details. Everything from her sister “Goodtimes”, to her father leaving (and blaming Hanna breaking up the family), to when her mother started having an affair with the veterinarian, to when she was a nudie dancer (she even has photos of her stripper costume). Things like that, I would be too embarrassed by them… but not Kathleen Hanna. You can tell that all these things made her who she is.

For most fans, they might be more interested in the second half of the book, which covers her when she formed her first band. It’s their first tour and they played some dead shows, but the one in Minneapolis, she had noted how Babes in Toyland hooked them with a decent gig. They were opening for an AC/DC cover band, and that group’s singer said to Hanna, “You’re not even a real band. You’re just a novelty band. The only reason you got this show is because you’re girls.” I had to laugh. Like he would know, being in a real band.

When the Riot Grrrls movement exploded, thanks to Hanna’s band Bikini Kill band, songs like “Rebel Girl” became an anthem. That movement and music style inspired a generation of girl bands then and now.

Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors just headlined First Avenue on Thursday night, in support of their new album Strangers No More.

Josiah and the Bonnesvilles opened up the show. The stage name is really for one lone singer, Josiah Leming.

We actually wrote about Josiah Leming, when he was only 20 years old, in Feb 2009 saying that Simon Cowell actually wanted to see Leming advance into the American Idol semifinals (but he was out-voted). Since his debut album, Come On Kid (Warner Bros Records), he decided to change his stagename to Josiah And The Bonnevilles for his sophomore album On Trial, in 2018.

The self-described, “red neck”, talked about how he grew up in a small town Morristown, Tennesse (near Nashville), and never thought one day that he would be standing in front of a very large crowd people, singing songs about his life. The audience was encouraging Josiah on and he seemed to really love being on stage. However, he confessed that he gets all nervous and so the sound guy someone would turn on the lights on the audience, so he could focus.

Josiah said that he first came to fame when he started covering mainstream popular songs, in his “redneck country style”. Hence, midway in his set, he covered Taylor Swift (“Anti‐Hero”), Tyler Childers (“Jersey Giant”), and Justin Bieber (“Ghost”).

He said that he was coming back “next year at the smaller room”, pointing to the 7th Street Entry next door.

Drew Holcomb (billed as Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors) came out excited and stating how amazing it was to be at First Avenue’s main room. The singer said that it was their goal to play this room and so it was such an honor that so many diehard fans have come out to support the group.

The group prides themselves as knowing everybody in the audience (and I believe them!). First Avenue was, by far, the largest venue as headliner, having played the tiny 7th Street Entry in March 2012 and at the now-defunct Triple Rock Social Club in September 2013. Every time they come back, they got a larger crowd and larger stage.

We saw Drew in 24 July 2015, and wrote, “Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors is a Nashville band, whose members usually include Holcomb’s wife, Ellie, though she was understandably absent as the couple just had their newborn son, Huck. New album, Medicine (Magnolia Records) came out at the beginning of the year, and the album continues to gain momentum with the band’s constant touring.”

Like Josiah, Drew also dabbed in covering popular song, in their style, with a cover of Adele’s “When We Were Young”. Speaking of Josiah, the highlight of the set was Josiah came on stage to help sing It Haunts Me

The other highlight, since they were in Minneapolis, they decided to work in a cover of The Jayhawks’ “All the Right Reasons”.

Summer’s definitely here- it’s hot and staying hot, but at least we’re not seeing the worst of that Canadian wildfire haze. Some gaps this week in live music as expected, but we’re celebrating not one, but two National Holidays!

July 4^th is of course, Independence Day, but July 7-8 in Kansas City are “Swiftie Days”, as Taylor Swift comes to town for two long sold-out, anticipated shows at Arrowhead on her Eras Tour.

Let’s take look at the Kansas City/ Lawrence KS metro musical happenings from July 1st - July 11th.

SATURDAY JULY 1

Young the Giant w Milky Chance, Talk, Starlight, $29.50-$69.50

The Irvine, CA band’s fifth LP, American Bollywood, was released in November, compiling their four recent EPs. In fact, we just saw them live in Minneapolis this week! They’ve opened live with the title track and recent new single “Wake Up” so expect that and hits like “Cough Syrup”, “Something to Believe In”, and Superposition” live.

Meanwhile, Berlin duo Milky Chance dropped their latest project, Trip Tape II, in October.

Fleet Foxes w Uwarde, The Midland, $39.50-$79.50

The acclaimed Seattle indie-folk band are still on the road in support of their 2020 Grammy nominated album, Shore, an album leader Robin Pecknold described as a “celebration of life in the face of death” (which would prove timely listening during the pandemic years).

Our shows last summer were by far the best of our career and we can’t wait to do it again in a few months,” Pecknold said in a statement. “It’s an honor to bring this music to life with and for everybody and we hope to see you there. With love and gratitude.”

Shore collaborator Uwade Akhere will support the band and also provided additional vocals on three of the album’s tracks. Prepare for some unreal harmonies to be heard as performed by all.

Michael Ray w Caylee Hammack, Big Time Grain Co, Baldwin City Golf Course, Free!

Located just south of Lawrence, Baldwin City will see national recording artists Michael Ray and Caylee Hammack visit for Independence Day festivities. Opening will be local favorite, Big Time Grain Company. The event itself is free, though expect charges for parking, food, beverage, etc.

Ray’s new record is Dive Bars & Broken Hearts (out last week via Warner Nashville) which traces a boy coming into his own, chasing life and girls, getting his heart broken and learning to man up. The Florida-raised Country singer has, among other accolades to his credit, four No. 1 songs– “Think a Little Less,” “Whiskey And Rain,” “Kiss You in the Morning, "and “One That Got Away” – with over 1 billion global streams, over 150 million YouTube views, and has performed at the Grand Ole Opry more than 70 times.

Between the Buried and Me, The Truman, $25-$50

Out on their The Parallax II Tour, the Raleigh, NC prog metal band will perform The Paralax II: Future Sequence in its entirety, as well as other tracks. The Paralax II: Future Sequence was released in October 2012 as the follow-up to 2011 EP, The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues. The band would continue to use this sequential format for future releases (Automata I and II; Colors II), creating distinct thematic sagas within their discography.

Randy Rogers Band, KCLive!, Free!

Their new album Nothing Shines Like Neon rings with authenticity from the same line up has been performing together since 2002- Rogers and band mates Geoffrey Hill (guitar), Johnny “Chops” Richardson (bass guitar), Brady Black (fiddle), Les Lawless (drums) and Todd Stewart (utility player) remain one of the top bands on the Texas music scene.

Taylor Swift w Muna, Gracie Abrams, GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, July 7 and 8, SOLD OUT

Swifties unite! The Eras Tour is the ongoing sixth major (and second stadium-sized) concert tour by Swift. Described as a journey through all of her "musical eras" it is a tribute to all of Swift's studio albums, including her latest, Midnights (2022), and those that did not have a tour due to the pandemic: Lover (2019), Folklore (2020), and Evermore (2020).

The tour began in Glendale, AZ in mid-March, and is set to conclude next August in London. And shows have lasted over three hours, with a set list of 44 songs divided into 10 distinct acts.

We love the lineup top-to-bottom, as young opener Gracie Abrams (daughter of J.J.) is currently crushing it with single, "I Know It Won't Work" off her Interscope Records debut, Good Riddance, and we're big fans of fellow LA band MUNA, who released their third and self-titled full-length album last year via Phoebe Bridgers' Saddest Factory records/Dead Oceans. They knocked us out opening for Kacey Musgraves last year and are taking a break from their own headlining Life's So Fun Tour, to join on this leg. Arrive Early to catch them all!

Legally Blonde (musical) July 7-13, Starlight,$16-$100

A fun award-winning musical based on the adored movie, Legally Blonde The Musical follows the transformation of Elle Woods as she tackles stereotypes and scandal in pursuit of her dreams. Her life is turned upside down when her boyfriend Warner dumps her so he can attend Harvard Law.

Determined to get him back, Elle charms her way into the prestigious law school. While there, she struggles with peers, professors, and her ex. With the support of some new friends, Elle quickly realizes her potential and sets out to prove herself to the world. Action-packed and exploding with songs and dynamic dances. Word is, even local dogs have been cast for the show.

The James Hunter Six, Knuckleheads. $24.50

Over the span of 30 years, James Hunter has worked on the railway, busked in London, provided backup vocals and guitar for Van Morrison, played venues all over the world, written scores of original songs, and recorded some of the best rhythm and soul albums of the last two decades. By 2006, Hunter was recognized with a Grammy nomination and an American Music Award. The band hit the road for a decade of extensive touring and recorded albums including The Hard Way (Hear Music, 2008), Minute by Minute (Fantasy, 2013), Hold On! (Daptone, 2016), and Whatever it Takes (Daptone, 2018).

Last Valentine’s Day, Daptone Records presented With Love, The James Hunter Six, a heart-shaped collection of candle-lit ballads and love songs. These twelve melodies have been selected and sequenced with great care, tenderness, and intention by Daptone staff for the sole purpose of compiling some of the overlooked treasures in his critically acclaimed catalog.

Sparks,The Midland, $37.50-$85

Brothers Ron Mael and Russell Mael will celebrate their more than 50-year history and newest and 26th studio album, The Girl Is Crying In Her Latte, released May 26, via Island Records. The album is described by the brothers as a record that is “as bold and uncompromising as anything we did back then, or for that matter, anytime throughout our career.”

Their lauded career-spanning 2021 documentary film, The Sparks Brothers, directed by Edgar Wright (Shaun Of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Baby Driver), brought the duo a new awareness.

Sparks’ 2021 film musical Annette, directed by Leos Carax and starring Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard, has received many awards- the film won three Lumières Awards and five César Awards in France. In addition, the film’s “So May We Start” was shortlisted for “Best Original Song” at the 94th Academy Awards.

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Ameristar Casino, $50-$68

Now celebrating over 50 years since forming in 1966, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band have existed from their early days as a large ensemble to the critically acclaimed folk and country rock group that they are today. Despite their heyday existing in the late 80's where they charted three number one singles, their popularity has seen a recent resurgence with continuing dedication to touring and recording.

Having virtually outlasted every other folk/country rock band from the Sixties, with their last studio album Speed of Life recieving acclaim for its minimal post-production tinkering. However, their most popular song was their 1970 hit cover of "Mr. Bojangles", originally recorded by Jerry Jeff Walker. In addition, their Nashville-recorded 1972 album Will the Circle Be Unbroken? remains to date, their most successful.

Billy Bob Thornton and The Boxmasters, Knuckleheads, $35-$55

The Boxmasters are out promoting their brand-new record, “69,” one of many records they’ve made over the last several years. Country rock, progressive, blues, outlaw rock’n’roll, with roots in the ’60s and ’70s, Billy Bob Thornton, J.D. Andrew and band can flex many styles of music as we saw when we caught them live in Topeka in the summer of 2021.

Gogol Bordello, Truman, $30-$60

The Gypsy Punk rockers return to the road for a North American summer tour, kicking off right here n Kansas City! The international punk band is led by Ukrainian front man Eugene Hütz, and the band’s latest album, Solidaritine, takes them back to their hardcore roots. According to Hütz, “Solidaritine is the substance that unlocks our empathy and our full human potential … May this be your punky uplift for our packed with troubled times.”

Gogol Bordello has been active in efforts to support Ukraine in its war with Russia. Last March, the band led a benefit concert at NYC’s City Winery with friends including Patti Smith, Suzanne Vega, Matisyahu, Craig Finn & Franz Nicolay (The Hold Steady), Jesse Malin, Lady Lamb, Marc Robert (O.A.R.), and Stephin Merritt (The Magnetic Fields).

“East West” is the sixteenth single by Herman’s Hermits. The single landed in December 1966, barely making it on the top 30 UK (and US) singles chart. While it was a fine song, it clearly meant something to a young Morrissey, as he would cover the song as a B-Side to his awful single, “Ouija Board, Ouija Board”. Morrissey’s version does change the lyrics around, notably, “Lush girls, older and dying, Sighing and crying…” and “Time flew, I wanted to see you somehow I could not do, because of success. What a strange life this can be!”

2023 will mark the 13th Anniversary of the Lower East Side Film Festival. The LESFF recently announced their programming, which includes exclusive feature film premieres, specialty short showcases, industry panels, and parties. It will take place from May 4 - 8 at the Village East Cinema, DCTV Firehouse Cinema, plus virtually through May 14. Open bar for all screenings.

We last mentioned The Meters when Art Neville (of The Neville Brothers) had died in 2019. Neville founded the band in 1965, but when Art (and Cyril Neville) left The Meters in 1977, the band added David Batiste Sr. on keyboards and added a new singer named Willie West! The Meters broke up in the 80s, but they’re still fondly remembered by fans.

Anyway, this upcoming Friday show will be Willie West’s first live performance in many years, and it’s to promote West’s new album The Soul Sessions.

If you arrive early, before the live music, there will be a live podcast by Twin Cities musician Mick Sterling, doing an interview with Willie West. You will find out all about The Meters and West’s solo career.

Joining West live on stage will be John Wright on bass, Dan Neale on guitar, Donald Hye on pockets - drums, and Toby Marshall on keyboards, etc.

Once again, Lana Del Rey has the #1 album in the UK with the extra-long title: Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd (Polydor Records). This is her sixth #1 UK album for a solo female artist. Only Madonna, Taylor Swift, Kylie Minogue and Barbara Streisand have more.

We were big early fans, writing about Del Rey in Jan 2012: “Well, that, of course, is subjective. But on a basic level, Del Rey embodies a sound that should be quite popular on the current indie scene: sexy vocals that travel the sexy spectrum from “sad and sexy” to “whispery sexy” to “nasally sexy,” set against a lush, orchestral backdrop with sparse beats and some violins. The minimal tear-jerker “Video Games” was grudgingly included on a handful of Best of 2011 lists, but I prefer “Born to Die” for its haunting, controlled tone and also for this line: “Let me kiss you hard in the pouring rain, you like your girls insane.” She’s no Dylan, but her lyrics feel authentic coming from the given source, regardless of whether or not her look is contrived. Would it be better or worse if she wrote about geeky boys in vests and made cryptic references to high-brow literature whilst strumming a Chinese erhu? What’s more, the production quality is pretty brilliant; Del Rey and co. have managed to hit a sweet spot—the axis of edginess and approachability, vintage pop and contemporary relevance, sexy bombshell and deadpan bad girl. She sounds good, the song craft is sharp, and even Pitchfork is “intrigued”.”

We saw her live in Jan 2018 at the Target Center, and was blown away by the million-dollar set: “As for Lana Del Rey’s show, this was the best set design we’ve ever seen! It contains two beach folding chairs, a raised platform covered with rocks, surrounded by plants, trees, and palm trees. The floor is transformed into a body of water when the special effect lights are projected onto the surface. Plus, that’s not all: two hidden swings for the two dancers. It was unbelievable.”

If you look at the concert photos, you’re note quite sure if she’s singing at a concert or that she’s on vacation in the tropics. It was definitely the best concert set we’ve ever seen.

We♥KC- Kansas City / Lawrence KS- 2023 Concert Preview

2022 marked a full return to live music after some two years of basically nothing, and then it seemed sometimes like everyone in every band, was back on the road, so much so that you often had to pick between several worthy acts.

Let’s take a look into 2023 for the Kansas City / Lawrence metro as to what’s already been announced, in the hopes that you can start saving those concert pennies, put a reminder on your calendar, etc. Many of the larger shows have announced already, as any big production needs a long lead time, but look for many great club and smaller theater shows, to still announce, closer-to-date.

In the Midwest, the concert season seems to spike in Spring (mid-March means SXSW in Austin), over the Summer (more outdoor shows, festivals, etc), in early August (as bands travel to and from Lollapalooza in Chicago and headline shows of their own), and in early Fall (September means Fall Tours and college kids back, October is called Rocktober for a reason and also has acts stopping on their way to / from Austin City Limits Fest in TX).

Los Angelese-based singer/songwriter Ashe (aka Ashlyn Rae) just headlined First Avenue, in Minneapolis, on Mother’s Day, May 8th.

Birmingham-born, Nashville-based band The Brook & The Bluff opened the show. The band started as a duo of Alec Bolton & Joseph Settine, but when they play live, they also add John Canada & Fred Lankford. They also had a live keyboard player, but was not named.

The group previously played next door, at the 7th Street Entry, earlier in January 25, 2022, which they admitted First Avenue was much, much larger (with ten times the capacity).

They played songs from their debut album, First Place.

Ashe’s main audience are teenage girls, and they overtook First Avenue’s dancefloor… singing along to all her songs. This is a group of pop music fans, as prior to Ashe’s appearance, the DJ played to the crowd: Taylor Swift’s “You Belong with Me”, One Direction’s “Steal My Girl”, and ABBA’s “Dancing Queen”… each song were met with singing from the crowd.

Ashe didn’t seem to mind, she seemed pleased and encourage the audience to finish some of her songs.

She mentioned that when she was booking the 2022 tour, she said of all the cities, Minneapolis was the one she was most looking forward to playing. Since it was Mother’s Day, she first asked to hear from all the mothers in the audience (who were probably chaperoning their daughter to the show). Ashe was determined to make this night a very special night for the fans (and their mothers).

Of course, Ashe played all the hit singles, including the new one, “Me Without You”, and saving her best-known song, “Moral of the Story” for her set finale… going out on a satisfying big bang.

Ashe’s debut album Ashlyn is out now on Mom + Pop Music. Her latest single, “Another Man’s Jeans” is also available now.

Pop singer Charli XCX is headlining the Palace Theatre, in St Paul, on April 28th.

We’ll never forget the time we saw Charli in Chicago in 2013 and wrote, “Of course, her biggest hit song, "I Love It", is actually made famous by Icona Pop. I sensed a little bitterness when she announced the song, "You all know this, I wrote this song. This is my song." Everyone went nuts and danced and sang along, especially during the big chorus of, "I. LOVE. IT." This is why you go to a live show, hearing Charli with the audience is a unique experience.”

The “Dark Connection Tour 2022” is stopping by the Fine Line Music Café, in Minneapolis, on April 29th.

The tour features Beast in Black as headliner. The Finnish/Greek/Hungarian metal band took their name from the anime/manga Berserk. They signed with Nuclear Blast label in 2017, and the rest is history.

Support will be from Canada’s Striker and Florida’s Seven Kingdoms. Although the tour information lists “No Seven Kingdoms on show date” for the Fine Line, the venue does list Seven Kingdom as opener, so I am listing the band.

Argentina’s Juana Molina is returning to the Twin Cities, with this upcoming appearance at the Turf Club in St Paul on April 30th.

The singer promised a more improvisational than previous tours, in her own words: “during the lockdown i dove in some sort of contemplative state. time passed and there i was sitting outside by a fire pit in the garden, just thinking and looking at the sky. everything was so quiet and pristine. and so was i. it took me a long time to be able to play or do other things. one day someone asked me if i wanted to play a live show via streaming and there was the reason to go back. it was like in the old times, when i was playing for hours improvising over and over on the same song. and then a question that have asked myself for years: why is that i never do this live? why being so structured and not get lost on stage like i do when i'm on my own at home. finally i decided to not die without doing it. and i did. and it was the best i could have done.”

Molina’s latest ANRMAL (Live in Mexico) is out now.

I got an official announcement that legendary band Red Hot Chili Peppers will be announcing a 2022 Global Stadium Tour, with the help of event producers Live Nation.

If you didn’t know, John Frusciante left the group in 2009 to focus on his solo career, and after 10 years, he rejoined the group again. Frusciante recently visited news station KHOT to speak with newscasters John Hammerswaddle, Todd the Squirrel, and Randy Raindrops, to talk about this upcoming RHCP tour.

If you want to experience a live show, the band released Devotion to Emotion live album in March 2021.

Red Hot Chili Pepper (Anthony Kiedis, Flea, Chad Smith, John Frusciante) will begin their tour in June 2022.

This is a true story, but I used to be a pretty massive The Smiths devotee. I was hellbent on collecting everything Smiths… including cover songs. That’s when I first discovered Quicksand. Their album Slip contained a hidden track… their cover of “How Soon is Now?”

Anyway, it actually brought a smile to my face when I read that the New York City post-hardcore band was still around. In fact, their upcoming record Distant Populations will be out August 13 on Epitaph Records. If you’re a vinyl collect, you’ll have to wait until September 24.

The band will be promoting the album with a post-pandemic tour…. Stopping by the Fine Line Music Café in Minneapolis this “Rocktober”.

We last saw the band, touring and promoting their record Twerp Verse … and we wrote Sep 2018 : “Northampton, MA alt rock quartet Speedy Ortiz opened the evening’s proceedings with a crunchy but melodic forty-five set of songs, in support of their new record released this spring, Twerp Verse (Carpark Records). Good news, Speedy Ortiz’s bandleader, Sadie Dupuis, is concentrating on her pop-oriented solo project Sad13. The new album Haunted Painting will be out September 25.

How is it that Dupuis had time to write songs for the upcoming solo album? She said, “I worked on Haunted Painting throughout 2019, writing, arranging and recording from home, then finishing the songs in studios around the country in between Speedy's fly-in dates. It's maximalist, and more true to me and my tastes than any record I've done.”

So, I’m sure you all know the Taylor Swift saga about how she tried to get rights to her music from Scooter Braun. Braun eventually sold the masters of Swift’s first six albums to a private company. I don’t know all the details, but basically Swift was very upset over this deal and she made it very public.

I think it all worked out for Swift, she’s been re-recording her albums and releasing to great success. In fact, her latest, titled Fearless (Taylor’s Version landed at #1 in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia’s charts – making it the world’s biggest first week debut of any album this year.

In the latest adventure with Kate and Lara… they went out to see Rachael Yamagata at the Fine Line Music Café in Minneapolis on October 2, 2008. As usual, they don’t have a camera, so no photos from this show… but they paint a picture that Vu thinks Yamagata is “mega-watt hot”.

My two lovely dates and I arrived at the Fine Line on Thursday to an overly crowded room of sweaty and shouty douches. I have to admit that I wasn’t very interested in being there at all on a weeknight as I am old and crotchety; but I also have to admit that, apart from the guy on crutches who seemed alright, the majority of the people at the show on Thursday seemed to be transplanted from a Taylor Swift appearance at the State Fair. Needless to say, I started out the evening feeling grouchy and superior, a combination of feelings I don’t often step into. It might get better though, so keep on keepin’ on.

The opening act was a man named John Devine (pronounced “divine”), another little soapbox singer born of the hipster womb that’s located these days in Brooklyn. Devine sang songs, like many before him, of protest, love, infidelity and cute girls who grow up to be hot. I liked this guy and his guitar but only for a few minutes. Eventually the singing/yelling got painful and the self-indulgent banter between himself and the audience made me a little sad. At one point, after a song attacking the War on Terror, Devine got into a long, awkward conversation with a soldier in the audience. The rest of us could only hear Devine’s tactful (and a little frightful, honestly) responses. I was ready to sit down on the ground and drink myself into oblivion. Okay, so it’s not better yet. Just wait.

We decided to go outside for some fresh air and good conversation in between acts, which turned into cigarettes and talking about periods (sorry about that). After a bit, some real pretty sounds started to waft out into the frigid night air. Rachael had finally started. She began by apologizing in advance for her voice as she had come down with the flu. And if you’ve heard Rachael sing before, you know that her sultry, raspy voice already sounds a bit sick (in a good way). The addition of actual illness caused her to sound like Bryan Adams (and I mean that in the nicest way possible; I really do) but she trudged on.

Recently, Vu, the boss man here at W♥M confessed that he totally has the mega-watt hots for Ms. Rachael Yamagata and after Thursday night, I get it in a big way. She’s lovely, lovely, lovely--the kind of performer who oozes sex appeal even while deathly ill. And she oozes that sex appeal because she is believable, is not the plasticized version of sex we see 99.764% of the time. Her words are honest; her smiles are honest; those drops of sweat and brow furrows are honest (at least I’m convinced they are). These songs come from a very real place inside of her and to see that place represented so beautifully is brilliant and rare. Yamagata gives a voice to emotions that so many of us have felt after love gone sour and the voice she gives them is sensational. Cute anecdote: for the encore, it was just Yamagata and her keyboard which turned out to be a little more than her vocal chords could handle as I’m sure they were exhausted and full of mucus. So, some sweet, fan-girls in the front row belted out the notes she couldn’t hit, proving their teenage devotion. Rachael seemed genuinely grateful and wheezed out more thanks than necessary, showing off a gorgeous smile and making those girls sing even louder. (Maybe a bad move brought on by fever. Just kidding, girls!)

So, in the end, Kate the Grinch returned Christmas and joined all the Whos in Whoville as they sang their creepy Whoville song. That is, until a drunken 40-year-old named Tom whistled so loudly in her ear that it throbbed the rest of the night. Then she stole Christmas all over again.
